View Full Version : Need track, worth it to buy TOMY sets and sell extras?
jstudrawa 04-21-2008, 10:58 AM I need about 56 15" straights and 18"/15" curves (which I will have to buy separate) but I was wondering if it will be worthwhile to buy a few Super Internationals or Long Beaches and selling off the cars and extra tracks?
The Long Beach comes with 23 15" straights but only 2 SG+ cars to us/resell. But has 5 18" curves!
The Super Int'l has 12 15" straights but 4 SG+ cars to resell/use and no 18" curves.
Thoughts or suggestions very much appreciated!
tjettim 04-21-2008, 12:14 PM Sets without cars can sometimes be cheap on Ebay.
twolff 04-21-2008, 01:30 PM Don't get the SI set unless you need 6" curves. I ended up with a grand total of 4 of them in my 4x8 layout and a whole box of extras under the table. The cars are still in their packages. They don't sell for much. There's a link in another thread to pics of some new Tomy Champ Cars that look like they are going to hand every other F1/Indy/Champ open wheel HO car its butt. So, I imagine the SI cars will be worth even less than they are now.
If you can find someplace that will let you pick through bulk track, you can pick out the straightest 15" straights. Most of the ones I have are pretty bad. I used all the 6" and 9" striaghts I had to avoid using the worst of the 15". Mine were sourced from the SI set, in bulk from Scale Auto and a couple of retail twin-packs. I wasn't paying attention until they were all mixed, so I can't tell you where the best ones came from.
jstudrawa 04-21-2008, 01:39 PM Wow, didn't realize Scale Auto had prices that low on track. It comes out better than 3 Long Beaches, but I need to factor in possible needs for extra SG+ chassis and hassle of reselling track/cars.
I'll give them a buzz since they don't say if the track is new or not, just that the 18's are a new item, for example. I assume it's new, but last time I did that didn't go so well :)
Thanks again, guys.
jstudrawa 04-22-2008, 04:27 PM I did the numbers and it seems that for what I NEED< Scale Auto is about the same price as 3 Long Beaches. Now, if I go Long Beaches, I will need a dozen 15" curves as well.
The Long Beaches will give me extra - 16 9" straights and 6 12" curves. Worthwhile to keep or sell.
I am assuming that no one will want the million 6" curves I have left over, but the other pieces could be used for a small under-the-bed set for the 8 yo's room.
That said, do I REALLY need a total of 10 Super G+ cars? Or do you guys go thru them fast? Or use the chassis for various experimenting or different bodies?
Sorry for being so wishy washy, it's looking like $400 worth of track and I am loathe to spend it without a lot of research.
Thanks again.
mking 04-22-2008, 05:55 PM ok. you dont really. and 10 slots cars are not 10x funner than one slot car, but.....i have lots more than 10, and i dont need them, but i do like them.
you can keep them all and experiment with different pickups, endbells, tires and hubs. you can custom paint the duplicate bodies.
you probably will be able to sell the new chassis for at least $10 each on ebay, so if you keep 6 you can sell 4 for $40 or more.
Manshow 04-22-2008, 08:27 PM My first post here, and I want to make it a helpful one.
js, you can send the extra cars to me, and I'll race them and get them all set up and tuned for you. I know what a burden it can be to have too many cars lying around, so I'm more than happy to be of assistance.
No need to thank me. The entire process can take 14-18 months, but I've got the time.
BRS Hobbies 04-22-2008, 10:35 PM I recommend getting the track from the race sets and then either keep or sell the extras as you mentioned. You can easily get at least $10 for each SG+ car or trade any of the extra SG+ cars for other cars that you want.
Best regards,
Brian
rudykizuty 04-23-2008, 01:45 PM My two cents is that while you may think you don't want or need 10 cars NOW, at some point you very well may. Having them already on hand when you migrate from track building to car/body building/tuning/customizing would be rather convenient.
I've only been in the hobby since last summer and have already amassed a healthy number of cars. And I haven't even finished building my track yet!! But that's probably because I personally consider the cars to be collectibles in and of themselves.
jstudrawa 04-23-2008, 01:53 PM Here's a breakdown of what the pricing structure is...
Its not much more to get 1 Long Beach and the rest from Scale Auto, that'll give me 2 more cars. But as I go with more Long Beaches, it starts scaling, as I still need 15" curves.
See the SRE Special tab...

Wow.. a lot of research in the spreadsheet! So whats the track layout going to look like? You, know what you need.. so you must have a track layout decided then? I can't wait to see it! Looking forward to meeting you at LaHomers.

Lol, I'm an accountant and the IT guy in my company of 8 people. Numbers and spreadsheets is what I do all the live long day :)
When we get closer to the final design, I'll post it. We did a shorter track using 1/8 curves every other to make a diagonal ess, instead of the more common 2 x 1/8 to make esses. We may come back to it but he's real excited about the one I am pricing track for.
I don't want to spoil anything just yet, since he's finishing up exams and hasn't had a chance to really sit down and tweak it. He's very happy with the initial design though, as am I. It won't be built until June since SRE opens the season end of next month and Homer has graciously offered his place to do the build (fiance is SOOO happy on that score), so I can wait.
I basically asked him to layout some ideas and then asked some dumb and not-so-dumb questions and after a bit he made me go look at Lexan bodies for a bit so he could "create" :) I'm not fooling myself into thinking I am some badass designer, which I am not. I can barely match my own clothes in the morning. Rather I let Homer use his many years of experience to produce a track that is fun for me and my son and yet will entertain a group of guys looking to have some good racing.
I'm honestly looking to get a HO circuit going here in Atlanta, since there really isn't one as far as I know. Pitman has a track here and obviously Homer's place, but not sure of anyone else. I really enjoy the social aspects of clubs, such as my volleyball club and Cougar/T-Bird club. Slot cars are almost secondary to the cool people you meet over the years as evidenced by this site and others.
Sorry for the rambling, I'm just excited :)
jstudrawa 04-24-2008, 11:50 AM I posted the track layout in the Build section.
Comments and criticisms welcome.

If you are interested in seeing some HO racing(and over 2900 cars in my HO collection) you should contact Homer and see if you can catch a ride up here to NC with them for the 6 hour Enduro on May 10th.

No apologies necessary.. I fully understand. I was pretty much in the same boat. I've been into collecting and bought a few TOMY Race sets a few years ago. I just stumbled upon my local racing group back recently, first club race in November.. Been addicted ever since! (Although.. I sometimes joke that an addiction to drugs might have been cheaper :o )
I agree.. making new friends and being part of a group of people that enjoy playing with toy race cars is pretty special.
