Greetings, all.
For years, there have been small, portable televisions.
I have had a Radio Shaft two inch tv for 20 years. I took
it to college and back. I had a second that I used to carry
in the glove compartment of my car. I would watch something
if I had to wait for something (Like emissions inspections).

I worked with a guy who brought his little tv in for
those critical events. He would hide it next to the computer
and watch the Superbowl, or something, while working.

A Home Depot in Florida I worked for gave out two inch TVs
as a Christmas gift for the employees.

What I want to know: Are there going to be new portable HD TVs
when America switches formats next February? Will there be little
two inch, three inch, whatevers to watch broadcast television?
Are there any now?

checking circuit city and amazon the quick answer is no.

I suspect the circuitry is too expensive, large, power hungry to make a 2" off-air HDTV practical yet.

That and portable DVD players are all the rage these days.

The switch being made next Feb is from analog to digital. Receiving a Digital signal is not ths same as receiving HDTV. Right now, there are these converter coupons being issued by the government that are redeemable for a discount on purchasing a converter to change the digital signal back to an analog to tv's without a digital tuner.

if your portable has the external connections for an antena, then you can hook this converter between the tv and the antena. If your portable has a built in antena without any exernal connections for rabbit ears then you may be out of luck.

The other alternative, again if it has external antena connections, is to put the portable on cable where the signal is converted for you.

I've noticed that a lot appliance dealers are literally dumping analog tv's right now with this change coming.

I thought the format change was about scan lines and resolution.
The current system uses 525 scan lines to form a picture.
I thought we were going to 1500-something. (Can't remember
the exact number).

A simple google search of "portable HDTV" turned this up:

No, the switch is, indeed, from analog signals to digital signals. The FCC wants back the bandwidth used by analog signals, so it's forcing over-the-air TV stations to switch to all-digital broadcasting.

HD is about increased resolution, but the switch is simply a matter of analog-to-digital.

Which means that portable Emergency AM/FM/Flashlight/Siren/TV I bought last year and which uses 10 D Cells - ain't gonna get squat TV-wise.

Oh well. I only paid $30 bucks for it.

Unfortunately, both options you gave there kind of negate the usefullness of a portable TV.
Not being tied to any cords anywhere.

Interesting.
7 inches. A little large to fit in a pocket.
But, $200 is not bad. Those 2 inch models were $100.
