View Full Version : From the CARnival...
Ricky2400 04-11-2008, 09:35 PM Well, not a great big turnout tonight, but Saturday's another day. The tracks are set up and we've done some tradin'.
Just a brief update. More tomorrow.

CenterShock 04-12-2008, 12:00 AM It has been a long day for me and I have one last thing before I hit the sack.
In the mean time, here is a pic of the room without anybody in it.
I am sure tomorrow it will be a circus! (or carnival LOL)

wlpaul 04-12-2008, 12:32 AM I wish I could have made it up. Looks like a nice space for a get together with some die hard racers. I hate my job sometimes. Hope the room fills up so much, the fire Marshall comes, and the Carnival bleeds into the rest of the hotel! Have fun everyone!

I just got in and I am exhausted! I had a blast and I hope to get some pics posted once I get my world back in order!
Hope you all had fun! I know I did!
rattlehed 04-13-2008, 04:04 PM ;)Had a great time! The racing was cool and a good time was had by all. This event could grow into something big on the "to do" list for a lot of collectors.
Nice job centershock for putting this thing together. I hope it will happen again next year!(or sooner:cool:) Only 3 hours away from me, an easy trip from VA.
Kiowa 04-13-2008, 05:34 PM The biggest irony was one Tiger Wheel Car, thousands of JLs, and the Tiger Wheel was proclaimed the fastest. JL has a little work to do to retain the top spot.
p.s. next year there'll be at least two Tiger Wheels

Great job on the tracks!

ringer, many tiger wheels were made for gravity racing, that's why there heavy
tiger wheels maybe should be in there own class, just like the super stock race hemi dart and cuda's are in real life
STUTZ 04-13-2008, 10:01 PM I had a GREAT time!:hat:
Excellent job on the tracks Nick!
I was nice to meet many HT members in person.
Looking forward to doing it again next year!:woohoo:
Koolector 04-13-2008, 10:37 PM Just what Stutz said. Good time.
Pewter02WS6 04-13-2008, 11:23 PM the event was a huge success! i can't think nick and everyone else enough. i wish i had free time to help them along with setting this up but work and family consume 90% of my time.
it was great to finally put some faces to the names on this board and others. i am looking forward to the next event! this was the first time i ever did gravity racing and i had a blast. rick mentioned opening up a gravity racing league. hopefully those events fall on my weekends off so i can attend.
the banger racing track was fun as well. i'll have to post pics of my first place custom class trophy tomorrow night and the remains of the winning car after swifty gave it a few extra hours of abuse on the "long jump" and hutt chewing on it..... don't ask!

i have to agree with this one. little did i know but tiger wheels are specifically made for gravity racing. even if you pull a rubber tire version apart, they are all filled with removable diecast(?) slabs in both the front and back under the body. aside from them adding weight, i can imagine they are removable to fine tune the weight of the car either by shaving the slab to make them slightly lighter or to drill and fill them with a heavier compound to add even more weight?? i also noticed that the axles are lubricated from the factory when i pulled my bwf grabber apart tonight. basically any area that would be hollow on any other diecast is taken up by solid metal on the tiger wheels. the axles' fit and finish seem to be very finely tuned as well as there is minimal play unlike any other brand i have. i am short on time but will post pics tomorrow evening of the slabs.
i agree that the tiger wheels should be in their own class. it is hard for any other brand to compete seeing as the TW are specifically designed for gravity racing. perhaps they could run in the regular class as long as the weights have been removed?? this isn't hard to do seeing as the bases are screwed on instead of riveted. this is just another feature to make these cars easily prone to tuning for the track.
STUTZ 04-13-2008, 11:56 PM the event was a huge success!
I bought two Tiger Wheels cars as the event was coming to a close. I will examine a car as soon as I can find what box I put in it.
It was a long day Saturday. After the event was over about 5:00 P.M., and the evening social meet (I left after 10:00 P.M.), some room trading and selling was going on. I left a room before midnight, and there were still deals going on. I got a phone around 9:00 A.M. Sunday to pick up a Johnny at the front desk. I arrived about 12:30 P.M Friday. It was a two day event for me.:woohoo:
Everyone had a good time, but Swifty was in heaven being in charge with the Banger Track. He was like a little kid in a candy shop.:hat:

I heard about Tiger Wheels, but never got to handle one until Saturday.
It was great to meet everyone!
Swifty will dispute this but, I had the best job of all...running the gravity track  Lots of participation, with many close races. My son Brett won the junior division with his Ford F250 WL. Ozmont had a very fast Studebaker P/U that I would have loved seeing go up against my boys F250, but It wasn't to be. There were many contenders, but were all outclassed by Jeff with his Riviera.....better luck next time. The rip "n" race, or garage kept portion of the event was very interesting. You don't know what you have 'till you run, and if you lose, you're gone :( There was some VW guys wife ;) (Laurie) that blasted through the field with a Ford GT to take the crown
Nick did a great job on the track, it performed flawlessly all day! I can't wait to do this again!
kingsting 04-17-2008, 01:18 PM This was a wonderful, well-executed event! I can't wait for the next one and I apologize for having to unleash a Tiger Wheels car on all the Johnny fans but JL cars are tough to beat on shorter tracks - especially when heavy Boogie Vans are involved.
One thing I told some attendees about the Tiger Wheels cars is that they seem to require a "break in" period. Fresh out of the blister, all of the TW cars I have were duds. After several runs an a fast, 50 foot track they began to come around.
CenterShock 04-17-2008, 01:50 PM Hey Jeff. Welcome to HobbyTalk!
Jeff is another Central PA collector that has some sweet gravity track setups.
We may have to change our rules a bit for next year. I was not very strict this year because we did not know what kind of turnout there would be and if we did not want to get a ton of other trophies for classes that maybe only 1 or 2 people would have cars for like Tiger Wheels or vans/trucks. ;)

Thanks for the welcome! I had a blast at the CARnival! :hat:
When we did our downhill races with the Harrisburg Area VW Club we would outlaw the top three finishing castings for the next event. This kept things fresh. We enacted this rule after a bunch of racers showed up with Hot Wheels Shadow Jets one time and cleaned house. They were banned for the next events. We had an "outlaw" championship race later on to see what the fastest banned model was.
A track with a long flat section will kill off the heavy cars like the Boogie Vans, Tiger Wheels, and big JL trucks and some of the lighter, smoother rolling cars will be hard to catch.
