Nice job Mr. B ! I like all dem , dare cars !Please say it ain't so that you be leavin off for awhile ? !

No, no, just leaving off on the Willys for a while Tracey. I will be ruining little cars at the regular rate.

This body has had both screw posts repaired, the hood scrap ...er...scoop snifed and filled, a dummy dash filler panel installed, the headache rack/parade shelf added, and full rear skirts installed. That's roughly half a jug of Testors, which is enough to melt an entire t-jet into soup when properly prepared.

I'll pick it back up in a week or three when it can be handled again and resume fiddling with details corrective skims, and wet sanding.

Can someone please say a Ritual Chant to UNDO the Voodoo that is on this slot car

It's called "The Cure of Five" and it works. You must start by repeating each of these 5 lines one at a time, one after the next, slowly, clearly, AND stretched out. Then start saying them over again faster and faster and faster each time as you go.... That should remove the curse. nd

1) oohhhhhhhh

2) wattaaaaaa

3) guuuuuuuuu

4) siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I always figure that the transitions between slumps and devine insipration are part of the game Greg. I ride whichever one comes around at the time 'til it changes. Now days I fully expect inspiration to end in slump and vice versa. Fortunatly someone here always provides inspiration when I'm draggin butt.

Both the missing front quarter nibblet and roof graft have cured out and they to recieved their final rub. If you've been following along since the git go this is the end of the 3 to make 2 slate 'Vette project. Slate blue is a fun color to work with. Blends with a minimum of fuss and rubs out nicely.

Here's an in and out on an old cobra thats been in the shoebox of death for a while. One rear well has a half hearted attempt at repair. the other is still in it's originally butchered state. Other than the obvious whats really wrong here is that the repair was done in the compost pile rather than under the clean conditions required to execute a proper goop repair. So first things first we'll get this old girl cleaned up before we even crack a jug of goop.

Big boy and little boy are two of my favorite whizzer bits. Middle of the road coarse grit, they are great for roughing stuff around and removing things that should have never been. Of the two the lil one is virtually indespensible. It goes in most all the crannies.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04700.jpg

Pin vise the windsheild nibs. In this case we went oversize so all traces will be removed. We dont want any residual particals screwing up the fills.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04708.jpg

I've got have a dozen different dental picks with all kinds of scary tips on them. This one is the one I use for dressing and defining seams. Just picking Mr Sloppy's poo out of the door seam.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04705.jpg

Snifing the bumpers out takes more patience than pressure. With a sharp blade and a few wiggles the buttons come right off. I keep two different handles at all times. one with a # 2 and the other with some form of gouge.
Using the right one for the right application makes life easy.

While I'm at it any post damage is cut back to a point where the meat is good and viable parent material remains to hang a graft on. I just get it over with and buzz them out. They get handfiled at the time of the graft to ensure perfect fit. This way the power tools go away when it's time to start the more delicate body work.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04742.jpg

All glue spew, droolage, staining and lord knows what else is wet sanded off the body. I generally knock clods and wads as well as mold lines off with 320 and chase it after words with 600. No need to sand stuff that doesnt need it. For the last step of this phase the body is scrubbed with a rouge made from kitchen cleanser and just enough water to mix it up. Then I scrub the "everlovin' you know what out of it" with a stiff toothbrush.

Elapsed time is generally about an hour for clean up. Now we can see what we really have and can touch it without having antibiotics on hand.:p

While we had the buffer out the "poiple chahga" got it's roof shined up. The reflection you see is the light bulb of my bench lamp.

About as close as I can come to the original finish. This is Duplicolor black lacquer applied with an airbrush at extremely low volume. Takes about ten passes to get a good enough build to with stand a three stage polish.

Still got a little pickin' on the A pillars to remove over spray, but I'm pretty happy with the finish match.

Thanx Jim, 10 passes doesnt really take long, especially at low fluid volume. I pound two er three passes down at five or ten minute intervals for flash time.

Takes me longer to mask the 'lil bugger and clean up my gear. :freak:

...and Jim... yer skill level is the same ...all I have on you is more reps. Some where along the line YOU begin to control the plastic instead of it controlling YOU. Took me well over a year of steady experimantation to get comfortable with it.

SJ Racer built this tank and sent it in for a little minor work. So here's the tank upgrade after some goop touchups. The yellow barrel is crammed in there to support the spoiler from sagging while it cures. USPS used the package for the punt, pass, and kick competition. A very nifty build! We'll round out the rear ....gulp....wheel wells for some clearance and call her good.

Bill Hall

This old toro has been rattling around in the shoebox for about three years now. I finally dug her out and scrubbed her down for inspection. We did a couple of Toronados for Win last year so the a-pillar learning curve is long past. This one SHOULD be gravy as the pillars arent broken out down in the door /cowl area.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04779.jpg

I dumped out my bag of green carcasses and nearly used this old charger clip as a donor. I thought better of it knowing full well that a green charger would come in soon needing pillars ....LOL

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04763.jpg

Plan B is always scratch build when the material is available. Here's the back of an old vibe controller squared up and scribed.

Bill Hall
10-13-2008, 01:39 AM
So after a few deep scribes I just bust the raw material free with the noodle knees pliers. Scribe and snap, or snipping with the dykes is much preferrable to slagging things up with the dremel or saw. Once you get the hang of it it's a hundred times faster too!

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04764.jpg

So now ya have enough green A-pillar stock to last a while.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04765.jpg

Occasionally I'll digress and put a starter skim on some of the other damage. In this case the wells get their first goop. It'll be set up enough to handle by the time I get the pillars roughed out and they are down and away from the work area anyway. The blue tape is to protect the screwpost from my sanding pencil.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04760.jpg

All grafts should be filed for a good tight fit. Neatness counts here and the extra effort to keep things straight and square pays off later.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04761.jpg

Ya gotta watch out for things like this lil nubbin. It'll screw ya up when your trying to pull the skim from the pillar and try to blend it into the drip rail or roof.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04770.jpg

Here's the easy way to plane material down to thickness...takes only seconds...sometimes ya take a few thousandths off your finger 'til ya get warmed up!

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04769.jpg

The A-pillar chiclet is filed for a snug fit. Ideally you'll want it to be lightly pinched in place by the roof. This is also a good time to double check the windshield opening measurment.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04774.jpg

Drivers side required a little whip to be left on the graft to fill a void in the side window drip rail. Note that the graft is quickly thinned in width by plunging it with the gouge. I just bend the little whip into shape with a gentle poke of the finger.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04776.jpg

Bill Hall
10-13-2008, 01:56 AM
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04778.jpg

The graft is attached with a thin mix of green goop. By using a little goop thinned out it gives you a few more seconds to fidget things into place. Pretty dont count here....ya just want it straight. This is about the time I usually set things aside for a few minutes and pick up all my tools and carp. Its a good time to fall back and re-organize.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04781.jpg

After all my toys are put away the grafts are stable enough for the first skim of filler. Here's the first pass across the pillar and up into the drip rail. Had we not left the little whip on the graft there would be a void in the rail that would have to be chased. Here's where we walk away and pick up some other car for a while.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04780.jpg

Pretty much just the same on the other side. Pillars dont always come off neatly when they break, so like the other side the repair is pulled/blended well beyond the break. this ensures that you have enough material on hand when it's time to start filing.

The aurora restoration guide was in black and white pictograms! It leaves an awful lot to the imagination. :freak: There's always a lot of resto work on my bench so once in a while I like to slow it down snap a few detailed pix and explain things frame by frame.

Yes! Scott had inquired where I get my picks, gouges, and scribes....Why the dentist of course! Ole Doc Hackney (great name for a dentist!...LOL) has a drawer full of used instruments of torture. As long as I promise not to clean my own teeth Dr. Bob lets me rummage to my hearts content.

Sometimes Gus and I stay up late. The urge to murder a model is always stronger around the full moon. The chassis for this project has been around for a coupla years and reflects my earlier brass experiments. This one runs wheelie pickups. In this build we really didnt do much except shuffle some "already haves" around 'til it clicked.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04791.jpg

Most times I just butch the nose off hapless model A's and plop some modified chrome blob in the void. All good fun but this time Gus was giving me that "one trick pony look".

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04787.jpg

Another thing on my list of wants was a flat head mill. The specimen shown/used is from a Revel diecast t-bucket. The bonus being a nifty rack of 97's.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04794.jpg

Part of my attitude problem has been the desire to keep at least some of the hood intact and retain the radiator mount and location. It's a bit of a cram to get it all under the hood and some liberties were taken with the Revel flathead for fit. The chassis was pared back as far as you can go without having the front magnet fall out.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04796.jpg

Cutting a hole in the hood wasnt part of the original idea but when do things ever work out as planned?

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC04798.jpg

This one just kinda fell together cuz it was there. Cant say that this will be the final configuration; but for now it wheel stands, rips down the track, and looks pretty decent for a scrap box mock up. If anything perhaps a lid chop, but the hi-hat look is kinda vintage... maybe a kegger type fuel tank to flesh out the front a bit....just havent found the right one ....yet! ;)

Bill, you ever race these? That looks like a great drag race car.

Rich

Not really Rich. I do run them and run'em hard, but usually by themselves.
These brass rats are plenty tough; but given the time that it takes to make one I try not abuse them beyond exhibition runs for the grandyuns and friends. While they have an extended wheel base the guide pin remains close to the standard location so they will navigate a 9" radius with ease and motor through a road course no problemo.

I run a few hot laps and park them before the cops show up. ;)

Thanx fer noticin' Jeff. Been trying to keep it interesting and "show" it as it is done rather than after the fact. More pix and less blah blah allows the camera to tell the story.
