kiwidave 10-16-2009, 12:13 AM Cheers for that! Very helpful! Bill Hall 10-28-2009, 05:32 PM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06523.jpg Here's a pretty decent 'Stangvert that came my way. It has a busted rear screw post. I managed to get the glue sclobbered glass off without engaging in trench warfare. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06524.jpg The big worry here is the two glue drops on the hood and fender. We're trying to work the stain out. You can just make out the tiny halos near the seam http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06522.jpg Couldnt resist the green speedline 'Stang that Park posted up a while back. As with the yellow one above the glass comes off first. After a good scrubbing and another inspection the cockpit section will be filled, the front valence will be constructed, and the front screw post will be t-jet-a-fied. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06507-1.jpg Occassionally we have much discussion about is it a fake?... has it been restored? During our recent horse poundification of the candy stang I was trolling along the Beach one night and lo and behold what did I spy? Yesiree Bob! Vacuum masks for Aurora pony car silver accents. Ruh roh batman...guess they were for personal use only...yeah ....dats it! I bought the left, right and interior masks....fer personal use mind you. wheelszk 10-28-2009, 05:40 PM :confused::confused::confused: Hilltop Raceway 10-28-2009, 05:51 PM Had to edit mine too...Didn't know where you was a going with this... I thought that was a mold for pouring resin fenders, doors, & quaterpanels...RM kiwidave 10-28-2009, 05:55 PM Vacuum masks, very clever!!! Bill Hall 10-28-2009, 06:04 PM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06510.jpg The obvious scenario. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06534.jpg Clyde's a newhire but has shown promise as a lot lizard. He works for peanuts. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06533.jpg Fresh wingage and stickees. Historical note: This chassis was originally a glue racer. The tires had enough adhesive on them to stick down a counter top. joez870 10-28-2009, 06:07 PM Great idea, Bill. If a guy has a bod to sacrifice, I can form the masks too, hey! :D My vac-u-former is just sitting idle. Bill Hall 10-28-2009, 06:10 PM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06514.jpg Finally decided how to tie the fenders together and get it to sit right. Almost invisible are angled iron type connectors that space and link the two fender units together. They were made from the left over running boards that the fender modules were pilfered from originally. A simple notch allows them to straddle the gear clamp and ride on the gear plate rail. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06515.jpg If ya remember way back this chunk is the flatbed portion. As it had been riped away from it's original perch, a little filler was required so that when ready it will mount sturdily. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06526.jpg After some filing and sanding to ensure flatness the rear frame and fender module was reskimmed lightly in black goop. I elected to strap it down with the chassis installed so that it will cure without warpage. Bill Hall 10-28-2009, 06:28 PM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06528.jpg Scored this odd ball fer a coupla bux. Cost me more to ship it than buy it http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06518.jpg The front post had a major blowout. The area is buzzed down to good material and cleaned with a blade. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06519.jpg As there was enough material/screw hole left, the axle trick was the obvious choice. The post nibblet is nipped to approximate shape and checked for relief. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06521.jpg The flatside relief is filed and the nibblet is gooped into place. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06516.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06530.jpg I ran the buffer over her for fun. Just enough to pop the color a bit. The overall original finish of the Marx body is poor. It is grainey, striated and would require wet sanding to get a mirror shine. I like the swirley Tuner wheels that they used! http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06531.jpg Always liked the look of this because it looks like the top is chopped already. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06529.jpg Thanx for riding along guyz! kiwidave 10-28-2009, 06:32 PM You are a machine!!!!!! Has a durn crack in it though.....fffffffffffudge! Gonna try and spooge it with some testors windshield maker upper stuff and hopefully hide it some. ;) Hilltop Raceway 10-29-2009, 09:45 PM Thought I'd post this on Bill's thread, (hope he doesn't mind), after all it is his work :thumbsup: I sent him this GrandAm for some repair work. Somebody had widened the fenders at the bottom corners for some reason, maybe tire clearance, better air flow, to lighten the body , who knows??? The bottom corners had been cut away. Anyways, the Modeling Magician worked his magic to revive the old Grand Am. He also straightend some posts and repaired other damaged areas. Bill reworked the gears which gave this thing a sweet sound. Nice work, real nice!!! I gotta replace the back bumper and she'll be good to go, you could almost say "minty" if it wasn't for a little paint wear...Thank you sir very much...RM http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/vv333/kwikdeals2/001-12.jpg http://i697.photobucket.com/albums/vv333/kwikdeals2/004-12.jpg 1976Cordoba 10-29-2009, 11:43 PM Call it factory fresh  Amazing work as usual! WesJY 10-30-2009, 02:37 AM Bill - awesome work on that grandam !!! Wes slotcarman12078 10-30-2009, 06:07 AM Yesterday, as I was leaving the house to run to the bank the mailman handed me a box. I saw Washington but didn't notice the town, and as I wandered through my chores I tried to figure out what Jerry sent me. It wasn't until I got home I realized it wasn't from Jerry!!! There's nothing like a unexpected package to make the day brighter.. I opened it up and here's what I found... http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp251/slotcarman12078/100_2657.jpg http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp251/slotcarman12078/100_2658.jpg http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp251/slotcarman12078/100_2659.jpg http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp251/slotcarman12078/100_2660.jpg My full fender rat rod dream come true!!!! Sporting a full set of baby ansens, and a slick multi-layered primer paint job, this lil guy looks bad as heck. The package as a whole is perfect, (tires, rims, and how they fit the fender openings, the paint, even the driver's "I'm cool" laid back attitude) and it will get some track time as soon as I get the track wiped down today. I'll put a few pics of it on the table on the CLM thread later. Thanks for making my day Bill!!!! I love it!!:thumbsup: P.S. Awesome job on the Grand Am too!!! Back to back homeruns!!!!:thumbsup: WesJY 10-30-2009, 01:19 PM oh man thats a very nice rat rod !!! Wes Bill Hall 10-30-2009, 08:56 PM Many thanx guys...yer always too kind! Well Randy, The crown gear conversion came about more out of need than anything. The idea actually was a mutation of another one of my fixes...putting the stock AFX crown in the early skeeeeeeeeeeeeezer xtracs and shutting them the heck up. In the spirit of why the hell not, I tried it on skeeeeezer four gears as well. The unforseen or overlooked up shot was that it picked up the top end on the wheeeeeezier specialty tire and wheel set up. The factory no doubt upped the crown tooth count to accomodate the dragster tires and sold the specialty tire a bit short. They always ran out of breath early. With the stock crown on a specialty ya really wouldnt notice the shortfall on most home sets, but on a true back chute (like yers) ole Stirling Moss had to get out and push about 2/3 of the way through. While you have the blue drag arm in the "Grandy", another great set up is the 6 ohm standard AFX arm installed in the later magna traction four gear chassis I knew the crown conversion was gonna work well on yer track! ;) Sorry I neglected to include/return the original crispy bumper in your packy...duh XracerHO 10-31-2009, 08:06 AM Amazing Grand Am with a finish better than mint shown by the GM mechanic's reflection in both, the hood & the trunk! Also, Bill, one Sweet - rat rod just amazing.  ..RL bobhch 10-31-2009, 08:10 AM Model Murdering Rocks this week and weeks to come...I love this place! Bob...rusty rods and Blue AFX plastic Grand Ams Rule...zilla Hilltop Raceway 10-31-2009, 04:31 PM http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp251/slotcarman12078/100_2657.jpg That's a cool Hot Rod. I likes the multi sanded primer colors. That looks like a 1:1 ride :thumbsup: RM Bill Hall 11-04-2009, 12:45 AM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06568.jpg Here's the beginnings of a black box project that popped into my head. I began with well ridden Tyco HPX2 chassis and narrowed the rear wheels. The tires are PVT tuffones that have been scissored in half, trued, and then mounted with black RTV silicone to keep them put. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06567.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06569.jpg The front set up is an old independent rig. The chassis holes were reamed a tad and the carrier tube was beat in. The aluminum wheels were dehubbed and regular old t-jet ribbed tires were skinnied on. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06564.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06572.jpg Snipped some scrap out of an old controller housing for mounts. If you look up a pic you can see it lurking in the standard Tyco mounts. Bill Hall 11-04-2009, 01:08 AM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06571.jpg The scrap tabs are mounted in the chassis and relief cuts are made in the correct locations. Then the whole mess is pushed into a Dash Sled and glued in. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06570.jpg The front axle struts are easily busted out with your thumbs and the screw post can be removed with a quick snip of the nippers. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06573.jpg The Tyco chassis mounts the body quite a bit lower so a few curls had to be pared away behind the front fender lip...just a smidgen! http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06577-1.jpg FYI: Here's a crude tracing on my table that would indicate that the sled has some pinch in the mid-section. Fortunately the ABS has tons of flex. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06576.jpg Seen here in overlay with another sled body, you can see that it does push the rockers out a wee bit, but not so much that it weirds the body line out. Bill Hall 11-04-2009, 01:41 AM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06565.jpg The final product is pretty convincing sitting still and absolutely killer on the track. The stock Lakes pipes arent even in consideration given the velocity this thing travels at. I'll probably take a page out of CJ's book and go with some epoxy mounted polished aluminum pipes. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06579.jpg Sits nice and low. I like the way the ribbed t-jet skinnies kinda mimic the old pie crust tires of the bygone era. Wish I could get them in a white wall. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06563.jpg In this shot you can just make out the poochey rockers...but if ya didnt know any better... http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06562.jpg At this angle it's plenty obvious that some pipes are needed to conceal the portions of the Tyco chassis that upset the skirt line. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06580.jpg We'll have to poke a coupla frenched tail lights in her cheeks. Her tail is almost draggin' the dirt! Juuuuuuust right! http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06561.jpg Clyde and Jethro are a good team! kiwidave 11-04-2009, 01:54 AM Awesome Bill. Love the wheel set up. Narrow rears with silicones, great idea. Being a Tyco guy I wish I could have 440 powered my green sled. Great pics also! CJ53 11-04-2009, 02:30 AM Bill,, Nice sled,,, instead of whitewalls.. how about just some baby moons in them front wheels.. or full covers.. ??? I'm sure you know the Aluminum tubing is kinda finicky when ya go to twistin on it... soooooo here is an idea. .. not sure how it works.. havn't went back to the bench to check it out.. but .. I'm thinking large paper clips.. already chrome,, and a shot of black sharpie on the tip will effect the hollow exhaust coated interior of the pipe.. Aluminum tubing would be great if you want a bevel cut sidepipe.. but for a turnout I think I would consider the paper clip route.. Might give it a shot tomorrow and see how it comes out on one of mine.. Just a thought... CJ XracerHO 11-04-2009, 10:46 AM Bill, Awesome Sled - GREAT idea and excellent execution!!  Got another project. ... RL videojimmy 11-04-2009, 11:14 AM great idea Bill slotcarman12078 11-04-2009, 11:27 AM Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!!!! Ballistic missile that it is!! Weird Jack Whitewalls and a couple 4 or 5 mm Cadillac Pat's hub caps might be the answer to the front wheel situation. I am anxious to get back to my bench, but still hurting a bit from my coffee episode yesterday. Maybe tomorrow.. Bill Hall 11-04-2009, 12:40 PM K-Dub: You KNOW I tried to pack the 440 in there...AND it is possible with butchery. I was trying to minimize the modifications in an attempt to keep the conversion reasonably simple. Ceej: I was having waaaaay to much fun slashing and gashing to get involved with details and minucia. Pipes, tail lights, wheel covers, dual antennas, lions, tigers and bears are just superfulous distractions when the chips are flying. My primary mission was to get the thing on the track and lapping consistently. Ujoe: Hope ya get the kinks worked out! I have an adhesive chrome film for wheel covers. I had Jack's white walls on her but they fell short on profile (no touchee the trackee!) and lacked the crisp ribs that I like anyway. The best look goin' was the old Tyco S rim with the spinner...but they were a hair tight and would have required o-rings to pull it off. Thanx for all the props and ideas guys! coach61 11-04-2009, 01:46 PM coolish Billiam.. but then again I expect nothing less.. Yest always get more.. your a genius... When I look at the photobucket video it looks like all the gears except the first one are original and haven't been moved in anyway. However when I attempted to slap one together, the original afx gear doesn't seem to work.
