View Full Version : This week in Model Murdering
joez870 08-18-2009, 09:53 PM ..And he says he doesn't get much time to play with his lil toy cars. Hah! Looks like you have been at it the same ten days i was out visiting trees, mate! LOL
I'm with Bob. (Not at hooters) I really dig these how-to -do-its. Seeing you fling plastic this way and that with no apparent concern for a major gerf gave me the courage to start carving some bodies up too!
You keep on gooping, Bill, and I'll keep on grinnin'! I LOVE this stuff!
oh, and thanks again for another peek at the Punkin. (My Bday is Oct 30th. hehehe) It is my favorite willys!

Nuthin like the old days Joe, where I had 15 or twenty hours a week to fritter away. Minutes count now and I'm lucky to have 2 er 3 hrs a week.
Oh.... I've fixed my share of mistakes. I kinda plan on it and hope I get lucky and learn something. Eventually you get to the point where most everything will sand and buff out if ya dont panic and make it worse :)

I know the feeling Bill ! With my overtime hours & just the general busines of life & find myself a bit "crammed too.Started on this AFX Dodge van project finally this past weekend & have crmmed in here & there 45 minutes or so 2 or so week days after work of installing repro 'glass & grill & touch up painting of tailights a & other details.May "redux" the way I filled in the side portholes.Still needs decals but ready to mount on the AW 4-gear chassis being donated by a yellow S'cool bus.
May use the S'cool bus body in a "Road Warrior" theme on a shortened wheelbase.
I have been perusing this thread & I find you incredibly talented ! Keep up the "Model Murdering"

Scary business here. I liked Demether's headlamp artistry on his recent GTO so I thought I'd go my own way for some "jagged" realism.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06319.jpg
Two tedious sessions later we fit the lenses to the body...rather than the other way around. Making the lenses fit a specific hole is suicide. The body is much easier to manipulate than a tiny acrylic lense. So far I'm OK with it.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06324.jpg
Here's a shot of a black XKE A pillar after a first profiling...the other three look the same ..LOL!
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06321.jpg
Always liked the Lindy Vette! Shown here after killing the mold lines and straightening some body lines.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06320.jpg
Post hole shrinkage on the hood gets a first fill. Shrink divots werent just common at the Aurora plant. This one was a through and through.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06323.jpg
...and a second pass. So far the plastics are compatible between Lindy and Aurora.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06327.jpg
Planning stages on the 'Camino. It arrived with a graft in place, but we'll cut it back and use the gennys from the donor. So long as we stay off the main body line, it'll be ok
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06326.jpg
The original came from Greg and had sat for some time. Lo and behold, a year later; the donor popped up on the beach with no bids....until the last minute...and then it was on! I'm embarrassed to say what I had to give for two good red 'Camino rear fender wells.
Although the mechanics are just cut and paste, the color blend is always trickey with red.
kiwidave 08-23-2009, 06:14 PM You do amazing work! I am very impressed!
tjd241 08-23-2009, 07:06 PM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06319.jpg
Likey ! nd
win43 08-23-2009, 09:21 PM Very cool looking headlights on the Jag. Are ya gonna light them?
slotcarman12078 08-23-2009, 09:39 PM I'm curious myself..I have them two lindy jags watching with anticipation!! LOL The 3.0 mm warm whites that I sent you should almost be a correct fit, but they would need to be shaped to fit the contours of the fenders.. you are making my soldering hand twitchy Bill!!
Bill Hall 08-24-2009, 03:02 AM Thanx Dave -n- Dave,
Win -n- Ujoe,
Not really much chance of lighting this one ...maybe with fiber optics like the Lincoln. It's very snug behind the front headlights. I shoe horned the chassis to fit, long before the lighting bug bit me.
While I never rule anything out, it's just not probable.
bobhch 08-24-2009, 11:16 PM Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaw Heck Bill go for broke...pop up the Vettes lites and lite that Mama Jama up like Eldon did with its 1/32 versions. Some were down and some were up and lighted. They made an up version with chrome molded headlights (non lighted) in the headlight seperate blocks too.
Bob...Mean Green Machine plus Back in Black attack is very nice to watch...zilla
slotcarman12078 08-25-2009, 12:01 AM I thought about that Bob, and chickened out. This is one of the reasons the vette is on the other end of the country now. Too complicated for me!! If anyone could do it, the current owner is the man for the job.

I bet Bill is thinking this to himself again as he reads this, "While I never rule anything out, it's just not probable."
Bob...almost done, just a little more, almost done...zilla
Bill Hall 08-25-2009, 03:08 AM Dont rule the Willys out! Cuz ya dont see...dont mean I'm not tinkering on it.
I just didnt snap pics of the fixing/sanding/filling/sanding of the tail lights I screwed up.
While it's very important to my finished product it's pretty tedious stuff and difficult to document the subtle changes.
WesJY 08-26-2009, 12:48 AM Hey Bill! I enjoyed looking at all the pictures, videos, and stuff.. Awesome Job man!!

Bill,
Yes! Thanks for sharing all of your endeavors. I still get amazed at the stuff you pull off. Even have picked up a few tricks and have started making some of my own goop. :freak: Although I'm still tweaking the formula for the right consitencies.
  Dave
Bill Hall 08-26-2009, 01:49 PM Really guys it's my pleasure! Every session at the bench is a new adventure of some kind.
Think dairy for your consistencies rr!
1. sour cream = sticky base...filler...bondo (will strand like snot and stick to your brush as a clod)
2. regular cream= glazing putty...evercoat (will self level and always hang as one drop on the end of your brush, the excess will fall off slowly)
3. skim milk= colorwash....blending agent....top coat (will run like the wind and fly off your brush)
Initially I was all poindexter about formulation and ratios...however!
It became apparent later that the various aurora colors behaved somewhat differently...meaning that some took a little more solvent and some took a little less. Kinda like the various temerature reducers for spraying automotive enamels depending on conditions.
I learned that one only has to BALL PARK the consistencies to the above list to acheive the desired results. The only exception is when spraying. Otherwise a modeler can mix on the fly from the base color, right in the container lid. You can make adjustments to the consistency right on the work piece so long as the parent material is activated/receptive. In other words, you can hang some filler and come back over the top and chemically smooth the gnarly bits after some flash time.
The best practice tools are culled bods where you can learn how to apply, adjust or remove product; and then witness the subsequent results after it has cured.
Bill Hall 08-29-2009, 01:16 PM All the butchered corners of the Grandy's rear wells are set.

Mummification techniques...always a good thing when your dealing with original artwork! With out masking it's guaranteed you'll wreck the factory pretties when your grating cheese. Haha looks like I stuck my finger print on there!!!!

Repairs are profiled inside and out. We're falling back an reorganizing here. Fit the chassis to check the well radii, check the screw post repair, AND I always like to get the tape off as quickly as possible.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06335.jpg
After the taillight bucket incident we made some repairs, finished the front buckets, and moved the front valence slat over towards center.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06340.jpg
I had entertained original vibrator bright blue for the final finish.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06341.jpg
As I was using AFX royal blue on Randy's Grandy, the color started to grow on me.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06342.jpg
I melted down an old beat up Porsche Spyder courtesy of Zilla's bench clean up a while back; and shot it last night. The camera tricks it lighter with the desk lamp. It looks darker under normal viewing conditions
tjd241 08-29-2009, 02:11 PM ...Pretty Purty! and ooh shiney too!!:thumbsup::thumbsup: nd
coach61 08-29-2009, 03:35 PM Don't that shine make ya wanna go to Bills house steal it and leave him a rusty bolt?

Bill Hall 09-03-2009, 09:12 PM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06374.jpg
Takes a few days to cure out ...and then a few more to assemble. Here's where I really slow down often taking an entire week to fidget things together.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06369.jpg
Getting the glass in without leaving DNA evidence is always the hardest part.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06373.jpg
This car came by way of Nuther Dave and the Beers show a couple years back.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06372.jpg
We made some standard screw post, wheel well repairs and ended up getting carried away....not an unusual occurance when I take a personal shine to a car.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06380.jpg
An original standard blue unit (this one is exceptionally dark) and the somewhat lowered detrimmed version. I'm pretty happy with the royal blue.
joez870 09-03-2009, 10:08 PM Yeah....Drive it like ya BUILT it! It is perfect!
I remember that piece, Bill. It made a few laps around my track. Ya almost didn't get it.
DesertSlot 09-03-2009, 10:30 PM That's a real beauty Bill! I love that blue! I need to make a 'Bird that color.
slotcarman12078 09-03-2009, 11:18 PM Dang that is coming out gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!! :freak: The color is perfect, the finish is unbelievable, and the wheel, headers, head lights!! OMG!!! :freak: I may have to make a 5700 mile road trip with a rusty bolt myself!!! WOW!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
yankee_3b 09-04-2009, 12:27 AM You should be designing these for the manufacturer. What a difference. Just beautiful!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

win43 09-04-2009, 01:09 PM SWEET WILLYS:thumbsup::thumbsup:
A whole lot better than the original.
roadrner 09-04-2009, 04:23 PM Bill,
I think you need to send that one to Coach for the next HoHT auction.
Can I bid now? :)

Thanx for all the props and kind words guyz. Funny it's always a relief to finish a long build and yet I kinda missem' when they are done! :freak:
Just fer giggles I always like to look back to the exact point where things went awry. Sadly I cant find any pix of the as recieved condition. All I could locate was this old progress pic after the wells were repaired and new screw posts were transplanted. This thing sat on the shelf for MONTHS just as you see it.
Bobzilla's recent thread that plunges into the minds of a slot-tards got me to thinking about how one gets from point A to point B.... to point C.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06369.jpg
I believe sometimes ya just luck into a cool car.
XracerHO 09-05-2009, 06:13 PM One Cool Willys!!  One beautiful Finish and great combination of wheels, hood scoop, headlights, grille & headers.
One Great build. ..RL
Bill Hall 10-14-2009, 12:58 PM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC06502.jpg
The final buff on Randy's Grandy came out decent. Even my tire installer approves. Once upon a time this poor car had it's rear wheel wells trimmed out (presumably for dragster tires). One pillar bent and one broke. A dent in the driver door. A broken chassis cleat and a porked screw post.
After nibbling away at the body work, we executed a few fixes and smoothed out a standard chassis. My regular crown gear mod. Adjustment of the arm gear relative to the first idler and killing the mounting screw head.

kiwidave 10-14-2009, 03:07 PM Wow, you do some outstanding work! The Grand am looks better than new. Thanks for the tips on the 4-gear chassis. I like the crown gear idea!
slotcarman12078 10-14-2009, 03:49 PM It has been a while since the Grandy Am made it's debut. The level of work that comes out of Model Murdering is always 100% top notch perfect, and this one is no exception!! I'm sure Randy will be more than pleased with the results!:thumbsup:
BTW, make sure you wipe off all the tell tale paw prints before you send it off. We all know Gus did all the hard work!!  :jest::p
Hilltop Raceway 10-14-2009, 05:01 PM Can I give a big double/triple Woo Hoo??? That GA is looking shinnnnnnney, not to mention the rebuild, especially on the quarters, and a tune up!!! I still say you need to change the name from Model Murdering to Modeling Magic...Just my thoughts...RM
roadrner 10-14-2009, 08:15 PM Bill,
Freakin' fantastic! You'd never know it was broke.:thumbsup::thumbsup: Dave
joez870 10-14-2009, 08:27 PM Though it wasn't as chewed up as that sweet Grandy, I have a red tjet Camaro that Bill re-quartered for me a while back. His blending of plastics is simply amazing.
Another fantastic job, Bill!
Pssst...Randy has a new addy.
it is:

Yeah what Dave said...That is great 4 gear technology from MM. Now my 4 gear runners are going to get this treatment.

Does that tire changer know how to use a Torque wrench?
Bob...Thanks for all you BLUE ;)...zilla
WARNING TO ALL : That is not Randy'z new adress...LOL (nice try Joez)
