T-jetjim 03-28-2009, 10:13 AM Always a treat to watch Bill fix up these babies. I have gooped up cars with dull finish and tell lines. I'll have to give this a try.
Bill - the dremel pads I have a tight pad while yours seem fluffier. Do we need to prep the pad? Did you soak it in water? Or do I have the wrong dremel pad?
Jim
slotcarman12078 03-28-2009, 11:46 AM Looks to me like I need to shop for better buffing pads.. Mine are of the hard tight packed variety. I'll be asking for trouble if I use them!!! You certainly have mastered the art!!

The ones you have are probably the pressed felt ones...DANGER...LOL!
These pads run way to hot and should be used for polishing metal.
Also they dont have the flexibility to contour themselves properly to the complex shapes of the T-jet body.
There's a couple types of the fluffy pad. I prefer the cotton. They also make a synthetic version. I rinse them between uses or when they become loaded up. Periodically I spur them with a blade or screwdriver to fluff them.
Man, I can't look when he gets out the buffing wheel.
Bill Hall 04-03-2009, 06:17 AM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05761.jpg
Tonight we dumped a pile of its and bitties that had been collected for the sixby onto the workbench. Here's what hatched.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05763.jpg
The busted up stake sides and bed have been in the scrap box for three years ...LOL. The stacks are Tyco US-1. The diamond plate sheeting came by way of CJ a coupla years back.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05765.jpg
I whittled up what was left of the broken up sides into something presentable and fixed the bed that some one had cut in half. The bed was reskinned with the diamond plate sheet and the reworked stakes were squared up onto it.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05766.jpg
It still looked kinda nekid so the stacks were added. A ways to go yet, but any progress is better than no progress.
Thanx fer lookin'!
tjd241 04-03-2009, 06:33 AM ... That's some mighty fine bashin ya done there. Area 51 Shuttle? :p nd
slotcarman12078 04-03-2009, 08:49 AM Holy Cow-a-bunga!!! I had envisioned the 6X going the big boy wrecker body route!! She looks awesome in stakebody form!! Nice bit 'o scratch building!!! The stacks make it!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
resinmonger 04-03-2009, 10:53 AM That's a great job of part bashing, Dr. Hall! The patient came out better looking than before. I guess this makes you a plastic surgeon. Beverly Hills better watch out!
videojimmy 04-03-2009, 11:08 AM Bill, I like the B52's soundtrack.... I saw those guys in 1990
you should seriously consider making a DVD of all these videos
win43 04-03-2009, 11:59 AM Bill if that's "bashing"........can I borrow your hammer.
Great looking truck!!!
Bill Hall 04-03-2009, 02:29 PM The pics are staged guyz! Everything just stacks together nicely on this one for pix! One swish of the crew chiefs tail and it's over LOLOLOL!
Nuther: Well the ramp truck was a bit off course as it did utilize non Aurora parts (heavens to Mergatroid!). As Aurora never made a conventionally cabbed staker; and there's only been eighteen jillion of them made in real life, the concept seemed like a no brainer when the 5 watt lightbulb finally came on above my head...duh! Gus and I arent good...but at least we're slow! Area 51 is actually Bob's department but these lil' fellers looked like they needed a ride.
Ujoe: This project has been around for quite some time and typically I never had an endgame. The service body is always up in the air with these truck builds. I chose to KISS it, hence the stake bed. Nice and light, low profile, and somewhat unobtrusive; normal requirements here at Murderville. We'll see how them stacks hold up. This chassis flat flys (go back to vid) so I'm dubious on their "survivability" during the inevitable barrel roll.
Russ: Guess bashin' has been a way of life for me. Some folks see DEAD people...I see RETROFITS! ...and lots of them.
VJ: I havent forgot about the disc VJ. At some point I'll have enough stills and vid to homologate into something worthwhile if not saleable. I'd still like to get the rear drop axle, the six by, and the brass front end stuff on vid. Not to mention the goop spraying techniques and all the other lil oddities that happen around here. Yeah I bop to the B's on a regular basis.
Win: It's really not a whole lot different than Coach's hammer. Aim here> and smack it! Truth be told I leave piles of shrapnel, sawdust, trimmings, and fuzzies everywhere I go. Me and Gustummo spent about 5 hrs in the cave farting around on it. Less of course time taken for union enforced breaks for the of petting his highness and the periodic running of cars whilst the testors sets up.
Hilltop Raceway 04-03-2009, 09:38 PM Very nice double fendered, double axel, hauler!!! Oh yea, I like the stacks and stakes :thumbsup: Great re-assembly Bill...RM
XracerHO 04-03-2009, 09:52 PM One nice stake truck build and thanks for the videos, learn something every time I tune into MMtV. ...RL
yankee_3b 04-04-2009, 01:34 AM Awesome rebuild, Bill! This is exactly what I was telling Bob...How you guys come up with this stuff blows me away! Give me a picture, no problem...without it, forget aboud it.:thumbsup:
joez870 04-04-2009, 09:06 AM I like the stake truck, Bill!
Staged or not, those bits all belong together.
yeah, beautiful truck!
Awesome rebuild, Bill! This is exactly what I was telling Bob...How you guys come up with this stuff blows me away!(snip):thumbsup:
I been here a long time and saying the same thing.....
Then Bill hall told me the secret. :D
"Take a pile of parts and play with them like Mr Potatohead or legos!"
Now there was more to this sage wisdom and I remember the idea rather than the words.
Sometimes parts will fit but the lines are wrong, and no matter what ya do, it will always look funny.
Sometimes the parts won't fit but the lines are perfect. THOSE are the parts that ya make fit.
Sometimes the parts fit and the lines are perfect too.....(heavenly tone and beamage of light on your bench)
Oh, and patience and the trusty #2 blade were in the mix somewhere too. :D
Bill Hall 04-04-2009, 01:46 PM Y3B,
Joez glamourizes it a bit, LOL, but around here I try to remember to approach things through the eyes of a child. Ask why not, ignore preconcieved notions, and scoff at established slothobby dogma. The idea that "everything important about life I learned in kindergarten" or "from my cat" holds more water with each passing day.
Every project starts with an idea that is original, borrowed or stolen from somewhere or someone. I dump the stuff I've collected for a project out like pick up sticks, look at it, push it around a bit, pick out this or that, maybe even add something new. If it doesnt work out that day...oh well...it gets raked back into its container for another day. A failure today doesnt mean the concept is flawed. It just means the design team on the fritz.
The olive stake bed lineage goes like this.
HT member Neo Rules posted a multiple axle thingy some years back. AFX had a Sixby in the works see Beers Bible. Chat discussion. T-jet six by is born with no real plan. Built a four gear Sixby cuz we could then had to build a body so the Woody Tour Bus was born. Built the Magna-dually with an actual plan to fit AFX semi's. Ran into the same problem Aurora did, the completed unit is a red hair longer than the existing Semi bodies, duh ...cut mud flaps and rear guide off. Ole Boss 429, HT member, modeled an old school conventionally cabbed semi from the 50's. The light bulb came on so I collected enough tidbits to get started. Slow as we are around here, it eventually came time to decide on a service body or hang a trailer. The chassis flat shreds the track so I didnt have the heart to make a thoroughbred haul the garbage wagon. Saw an old turd farm truck in a field one day and got me to thinking, "There's my get out of jail card!". Remembered that I had the shattered remains of a t-jet stake truck in the shoebox of mysteries.
So ya see I never rush things.Time is measured in weeks months and years in my slot cave. Every project has it's own ebbs and flows. I try to stay out of the way and never force the issue until it speaks to me.
roadrner 04-04-2009, 04:01 PM More great movies Bill! Thanks, Dave :thumbsup:
bobhch 04-04-2009, 09:43 PM Bill,
That blue shinney thing is sooooooooooooo kewl and was fun to watch it polish up. Post fixins and that Area 51 stake bed truck all just blew me away.
It may take a while to watch all these videos and read the post on this thread but, it is well worth it and a fun watch and read for any slot tard.
Joez,
The Mr. Potatohead and Legos example you gave to Yankee just had me busting up out load...hahhahaahahah good advice is sometimes funny too.
Bob...now I am going to go build some stuff...zilla
yankee_3b 04-04-2009, 10:30 PM Y3B,

That's good advice...wish I had your patience. Since I don't have a "slotcave" I guess I'm gonna have to watch my pup! God knows I'm in the doghouse enough. LOL! :)
Bill Hall 05-01-2009, 02:32 AM Here's one thats been hanging around for some time. I used two AW suburbans to make a 50's general motors pickup.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/741D748-B11C-42F8-970B-6857BE026A3A.jpg
After stripping, the roof and rear window section of the burban are carefully sliced away.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/F7B5E69-A97C-45E7-AB9E-DC90CA0AE02F.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/A52AD21-D6E4-439B-A9A9-6A74B277FD28.jpg
The rear window section was grafted to the cab and the second roof was tucked in behind and bonded. The rear screwpost was shortened and relocated at this time also.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/9738EF0-1713-4A52-87BF-640741F1EDA4.jpg
The back glass was snipped away and moved forward.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/76E88D9-EC82-477A-967D-288482430094.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/A34D567-97E3-4292-9901-9F786BD2C-1.jpg
So here was the rough idea. I wasnt real tickled with the AW plastic in goop form. It doesnt sand or file well compared to the old school Aurora styrene and had a tendency to sag and droop if over activated. The pick up was set aside to cure and I forgot about it....for a year ....LOL!
resinmonger 05-01-2009, 02:51 AM THe Goop Doctor is in da Houz!!! That's a way gnarly looking truck, Dr. Hall. Looks like the patient survived the procedure and is living happy in Slotville.
Hutts love a story with a happy ending. :drunk::hat::freak::dude::tongue:
And they love frogs with crunchy centers!
Bill Hall 05-01-2009, 02:52 AM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05864-2.jpg
Bobzilla had sent some House of Color transparent red in a care package some time ago. After some scuffage and primer, a base of old school testors silver (the big chunk) was applied. I pull back and fog this on like flock with lots of air and minimum fluid allowing it to build gradually and uniformly.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05860-1.jpg
The silver base was allowed to dry completly. Two light coats of Transparent Red are laid down as a sealer. After the sealing coats had dried, I hammered on steady coats of Red until I got the coverage and tone that appealed to me.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05867-1.jpg
The tonneau was masked off using regular old 3m desk tape for a tight edge. The bumpers and Hooker style headers were also hosed in black and then carefully sprayed with alclad. The headers were carved from an old AFX Corvette.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05868-2.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05869-1.jpg
I vegged out and forgot to square out the back glass....duh....so it looks somewhat dorkulous! :freak:
Brush touches are done in testors "silver argent" and "dark red" from the little jugs.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05866-1.jpg
Wheels are dehubbed and center bored front AFX shinys. Tires are PVT AFX front units all 'round.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05870.jpg
resinmonger 05-01-2009, 02:55 AM Can I borrow the truck tonight dad? I gotta date with Mary Sue Ferkle. Pullease?
Bill Hall 05-01-2009, 03:24 AM I would son ....but the Future is still tacky on the Alclad!
You'll have to take the Country Squire Wagon tonight! Complete with flapping woodgrain applique' and tailgate window that wont roll up!
Andrij 05-01-2009, 03:28 AM Bloomin heck.
That is an Amazing job.
Makes my up and coming customs look like they were made wearing 4 inch cokebottle bottom glasses, and 2 left hands full of thumbs.
Hey, wait, that is what i look like in real life :O
Beautiful Ute Mate :)
WesJY 05-01-2009, 03:37 AM whoooaaahhhh!!! thats one bad a$$ looking truck!!!
Wes
VERY sweet chop job Bill! Wow! I like it! I love the wheels - who makes those? Fantastic work and detail! Excellent job!
PD2:thumbsup:
tjd241 05-01-2009, 08:50 AM ... no video? ;) ... Awesome build. :thumbsup::thumbsup: nd
roadrner 05-01-2009, 08:54 AM Bill,
Nothing dorkulous about that Truck from what I can see. I have a couple Surburbans sitting in the box that would make nice donors. Just dread stripping the damn things. :freak:
:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: Dave
1976Cordoba 05-01-2009, 09:35 AM That's Hot

coach61 05-01-2009, 10:49 AM Ohh shiney pickup! That freakin Awesome Bill!
Coach clears off desk and gives up, I can't compete with that!
Hilltop Raceway 05-01-2009, 11:41 AM Oh yea, I likes that little red truck!!! Nice nip & tuck customization work Mr. B. I really like those side air flow decorations, too!!! Wow...RM
slotcarman12078 05-01-2009, 12:32 PM I'm with ya coach!!! Impossible to even get close to that level of perfection!! This one is easily in the top 5 customs I have seen here on HT. 5 STARS FLAWLESS!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:: thumbsup:
Bill Hall 05-01-2009, 02:46 PM Y'all are too kind! She's not without her warts. I borrowed Randy's camera with the special setting for this one. Originally it was to be white with red accents. Given the choice I prefer never to work in white base (too hard to see whats going on with old eyes). This was part of my aversion to completing the project in the first place. So the project sat until I recently defaulted and elected to complete the project with the idea that I was gonna play with some metallics. During the original stripping process I was reminded that AW plastic is quiet soft and resists buffing. It prefers to burn and scortch. Therefore I wouldnt be finishing this truck in the usual manner, but that it would be painted conventionally. This is why you dont see me use the goop technique on AW cars. It's too rubbery/pliable to sand, file, or buff. While it IS possible... using low speed, and yer last bit of patience....I ask myself to what end is my time worth for a white blob. :freak:
PD2: Those are standard AFX fronts. Readily available on the Beach.
Randy: The pipes were a necessity. There was waaaaaaay to much of the hong kong sticker hanging below the rocker. Just my way of saying "dont look here"...snicker.
Nuther: At the time of the pics the Alclad areas had been brush touched with future. To which Gus hairs and whiskers, small planetiods, tree stumps, and other space junk seem to gravitate. Video someday soon.
RR: Good lord yes! Completely stripping the 'burbans was sheer torture. It is mandatory for the goop process that no foreign materials are present to discombobulate the bonding/fusion. It'd be like trying to weld metal with a shovel full of dirt on the seam.
Gear Head 05-01-2009, 02:48 PM drool...drool
Makes my work look that much worse!
:thumbsup::thumbsup:
yankee_3b 05-01-2009, 10:26 PM That sure is a beauty! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:
XracerHO 05-02-2009, 12:16 AM Bill
Very nice Eye Candy Cameo!!  Awesome build! The back glass looks great & really custom. Really trick way you used the rest of the top of the panel as the tonneau cover - slick! ...RL
bobhch 05-02-2009, 08:24 AM Bill,
What everyone else said, "Fantastic!" Yeah that House of Kolors Transparent Red is what I call the Magic paint. It is so much fun to watch it go on over a silver base coat & makes all that work you put into the build worth the effort.
This is one OVER THE TOP Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet Truck!!
Bob...Blown away by Bills Phsssssssssssssst-up...zilla
mowyang 05-02-2009, 02:14 PM Bill -
As always, fabulous work. I love the GM pickups from that era, and yours is a beauty. Neat idea to make one from a, er, from two Suburbans.
One day I'll need to set aside some time to go through all the Model Murduring posts. I did take Bobzilla's advice a few pages back to check out the videos on post #688. The flatbed ramp truck is waay cool. Seeing all those brass gears spinning on the gearplate was a reminder of why the tjet is my favorite chassis. It is so darned retro-mechanical, and the flatbed is all of that times 2. Love the way the ramp-bed covers it all up, then slides and tilts back to reveal it all. Looks great with the british green roadster on top too.
Awesome builds!
Mark
That is niiiice. Should lead the parade at the next truck race for sure!
joez870 05-04-2009, 04:35 PM Bill, Your new truck is very nice!
The paint looks inches deep, too, hey!
The whole package rounded out with wheel choice and those pipes is jussst right.
Think of how many TL could have sold had he your vision.
Good on ya! :D
They made a Ford P.U. of the one piece variety like the Cameo. Can't remember the name of it, but it would be nice if there was one around to clone. Sure would make a good sister for that fine Cameo.
