Do you think you might ask Robi to call my Domyno and share the secret of how to keep a slotard husband happy? j/k LOL

Happy Birthday Bill! And it is very nice to see that birthdays can still be celebrated and enjoyed, even after so many have come and gone before LOLOLOL.

Next weekend when I am opening my socks and t shirts, I'll only dream of finding that green (or blue, or slate...) t jet hiding in the box. Congrats to you, but special kudos to Robin, who obviously has the ability to distinguish the best bits of t jet plastic from the rest, and bring 'em home too!

Found a few minutes to work out some of the minor blems on the olive Cobra.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05558.jpg

The removal of sloppy glue residue is always touch and go. The trick to repairing the cowl on convertibles is to wet sand the entire windsheild mounting surface so that the glass fits nicely. You'll note that the scuff is pulled over onto the fenders in 600.

I couldnt leave the hood divot alone either. Only because I was gonna have to cut and rub the entire car anyway to be happy. It was cut down with 600 as shown above and then feathered away with 1200 later.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05560.jpg

As you work your way through the grits I roam around looking for nicks and scratches. This one had none so when the spot repairs were done we jumped to 2000 and chased the fine playwear. Not a pretty sight, but it's how ya get where yer goin'. Prior to 2000 the two repair areas are feathered out in 1200. The cowl repair is pulled along the front fender crown and back along the upper door sill. the hood divot is feathered back along the full length of the hood and forward into the front apron. This ensures a smooth transition.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/DSC05562.jpg

Seen here is the standard three stage buff fresh off the wheel. The weirdness on the front apron is actually reflection.

http://s44.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/modelmurdering/MOV05571.flv&fs=1&os=1&ap=1

The chassis is a shoe tuned stocker with a fluffed gear set and notched brushes. Wheels are baby Ansens with Super Tires. Not my first tire choice as they are a bit firm and chattery....we'll change them another day.

Other than the slightest re-touch of black lacquer to the seat rests that was about it for the Green Snake

Hey guys y'all should know by now that I love to share the mayhem. Cooperating plastic is what we do here so any little snippet of intel I can pass along means another lil car might survive into the next generation.

Ujoe brings an interesting point. FEAR! Dont think for a minute that my initial thought wasnt "OMG that's a rare duck...I better just leave well enough alone!" Fear is GOOD. It leads you to CAUTION and at that point the battle is won. This is identical to Bobzilla's "WALK AWAY" rule. I always step back or take a time out and re-boot the plan in my head.

Dont think for one minute that mistakes arent made here. Whoops and d'ohs are a fact of life. Rather than cursing them I embrace them and find the lesson. After a few hundred cars go across the bench the fear fades then caution can prevail.

1. dremels are dangerous
2. exactos are sharp
3. glue ruins plastic
4. glue fixes plastic
5. glue comes with a lid...use it!
6. armatures are hot
7. screw posts break for no reason
8. avoid tan cars
9. it was broke when I got it

10. NO FEAR!

I have a thousand more but I usually start here at the beginning of a new project.

8. avoid tan cars

whats up with the tan cars????

joez870
01-25-2009, 01:18 PM
The old aurora tan cars have become extremely brittle with age.
Tan plastic looses its elasticity as the plastic gasses out. Sometimes it only takes a slight bump and they will come apart. Backing out a screw can tear a post out!

I got a tan Riv at auction. It was a nice piece. It arrived in my mail box in pieces!
The box was perfect but the car was packed too tightly.
Bill even tried to repair it. Well....it came back to me in pieces.
I know he tried hard to make the repair, but the tan plastic was just not having it.

Old BLUE plastic can act the same way. I believe Bill received a blue jigsaw beetle in he mail after an auction. It sure was fun watching him put THAT one back together!

I also have a tan hotrod. It WAS very nice....until I dropped it from 12 inches. It broke into 3 pieces. I have repaired it and even revitalized the plastic a bit using Bills "Wash the inside with glue" tecnique. I was amazed at how the plastic absorbed the Testors Liquid glue! The plastic acted like a sponge!

I am sure Bill can fill you in on anything (probably alot) that I left out.

 Hahahahaha! Asp. Good one Jerry!

Kevin: Joe has been following along closely the last few years and actually remembers better than I do. His rendition of "Tan" intel is dead on.

Unless tan is re-vitalized by under spraying/washing it should always be handled with extreme caution...or avoided like the plague. Of course if ya just let it rot as a shelf queen you'll be ok...until ya touch it or track it.

Tan is a trail of tears.

Bill,

Thanks for showing us all yer tricks via Video! The pickup shoe bend is stuck in the to do part of my brain as we speak along with the 4 gear chassis build.

The goop and iron videos are a great help on how to use this stuff in a detailed way (I like detail).

That Bug looks great with the red on the bottom. It really does look like a June Bug..........Sweet! Just like when I was a kid trading parts with my good friend Chris across the street. I have gotten some way cool stuff from Mr. Bill on several occasions & it is always fun to scrape some stuff into a box now and then. Hey Postal workers need jobs too. How come they never thank us for mailing stuff? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm kinda unappriciative in a way. If a plumber came to your house and fixed your FLUSHER you would surely thank him. The vids are a bit crude but they get my ideas across in a way that neither the written word or still pix can. Look for more MMTV to come.

Occaisionally I'm a bit undisciplined and get out of frame. For that I do apologize. We're working on it.

Ujoe: As for Gus giving away the secret Goop formulation, LMAO; I'd like to remind you that it has never been a secret and everything is posted and stored in the HT archives. Having goop is no big deal, any monkey can make it. Taking the time to learn how to use it is where you pay your dues.
