Thanks for the update, Nick. I'll be there at 10 on Sunday to join the club and help out with the track.

As an aside, I was looking at some of last year's results on the website and didn't see anything listed for the 4wd Sportsman Oval class. I was just curious to see what some average lap times are in that class. I'm new to racing, so I just want to see if me and my car are going to be able to keep up. Thanks.

Sad to say, 4WD Sportsman Oval hasn't been run in years due to lack of interest. I would run it if we had enough entries, but with you and me, we still need three more.

No one at our track seems interested in 4WD electric any more. I would like to run 4WD off-road too, but I am the only one.

Oh, man! That's bad news. I've been at the track a lot lately, practicing and what not and, it seems that no one runs oval PERIOD. Everyone seems to prefer the offroad course and it's jumps and bumps. I'm more of a "flat out speed" kinda guy, so I prefer the oval, but I plan to start practicing on the offroad track with my 4wd buggy (in case we can get enough people to run that class) and my T4. Is it safe to assume that the 2wd truck modified class has enough entrants in both oval and offroad?

Thanks for the info! Much obliged.

I don't know how popular the CRT is, but with the MT2 also included I think it would be a good class. I think it will be a popular class once word gets around.

Thanks for the info, Nick. Say if someone were to have a dinky little Tamiya Subaru Brat with a Trinity Monster Stock motor and wanted to race stock oval, would said person have to race in novice stock? Technically, I'm a novice having never been in a "real" race before. I'm just trying to get everything squared away so I'll know what classes I'll be running. And hopefully there'll end up being a few more people interested in 4wd electric buggy classes too. Thanks again for the info!

I read the rules and there is nothing against 4wd mod buggies for dominator. That sounds like a lot of fun, untill someone shows up with a real dominator.

Tim,

Yeah, novice is for first time racers, its not just a kids class, its a class for people to race with others of a similar ability level, if its is evident that you should not be in novice we will let you know :). You wouldn't have to race novice oval, but that opportunity is there. Unfortunately we do not have much stock racing going on, on the oval.

There would be no problem with 4wd mods racing with dominators, that class was always typically an open mod class, where just about anything goes. In fact, I believe we had a 4wd buggy racing in the class the last time it was raced.

Nick,
You've been a HUGE help and I really appreciate all the info. As for the novice stock class; I've been practicing and can get around the track pretty well on my own, but I'm yet to be in a crowd. Couple that with the fact that I want to run a Subaru Brat and I'll probably fit in perfectly with the novice stock class. lol

As for running my 4wd buggy in the dominator class, that sounds like a good option, too. I've spent far too much time tuning my buggy's handling characteristics for the oval not to at least *try* to run it in competition. I guess now I'll have to buy yet another brushless system and another Li-Po, cause it sounds like the ole' P-94 and 4200EPs I have might not cut it amongst the dominators. lol Winning isn't a big deal to me at all. I just want my cars and trucks to go as fast, and as under control as possible (and hopefully not get lapped too many times in the process). lol

Thanks again!

That would be Brian Carey, who holds the Dominator class track record at 29 laps for a 4 minute heat. The latest Truck Mod Oval and Sprint Car records for 5 minute heats are 29 laps. EDM is 30 laps for a 5 minute heat.

I don't have a Dominator, but I'd be willing to put something together to run 4WD mod oval.

Tim,

Good job rebuilding the turn 1 and 2 oval wall :). Great meeting you too. Hope you had fun.

Somebody took pics but I didn't. Offroad Track has 2 drops off ramps, 1 single, 2 doubles, and a tabletop made of dirt. I think I got that right. The tabletop made of wood is gone.

It was greating seeing everybody again. Can't wait to race Dirtrunners style.

Yeah gang, great turnout. This was my first work day and was asking Charlie how it compared to others? He said he never saw a new track get done so fast. Nice job on the oval wall Tim, and welcome to the club. Nick, who was the guy with the Bobcat? He was a life saver! Couldnt imagine leveling the old track , and hauling all that dirt by hand. Also Nick, awesome track design, and everyone who tweaked it with the jumps, great job. Charlie, thanks for the drinks, coffee, donuts, and pizza lunch. It was great seeing everyone again. If todays team work is any indication of 2008...........its going to be a great Dirt Runners racing season.

Hey guys,
Someone mentioned to me on Sunday that the club sometimes purchases a bunch of transponders on the cheap. I just wanted to put this out there in case that's happening again this year. Please put me down for three of 'em.

Tim

nicwald
04-08-2008, 09:34 AM
We can put an order together, last time it was me, not the club (tough to deal with checks ;) ). I can do so again. The cost would be the price of the transponder + shipping/10. AMB has a bulk purchase discount if you buy at least 10.

So I have so far:

Paul - 1
Tim - 3

Expensive.

The price was just increased the beginning of this year. Personal Transponders are the only electronic device I know of where the price goes up over time for the same functionality. But that is what happens when you have a monopoly. There are alternatives to the AMB transponders, but they are not much less expensive.

Amen, brother! Say, Nick, I just picked up a couple 5 gallon pails of heavy-duty exterior grade white paint thinking we could use it to paint the driver's stand and pit area and maybe even the fence surrounding the track if there's enough left over. I've got ladders and pretty much all the painting tools (rollers, brushes, buckets, etc) we'd need to have 4 or 5 guys, including me, do the painting. So if that sounds good, just let me know and I'll bring it all with me on Sunday.

Expensive.

The price was just increased the beginning of this year. Personal Transponders are the only electronic device I know of where the price goes up over time for the same functionality. But that is what happens when you have a monopoly. There are alternatives to the AMB transponders, but they are not much less expensive.

Howdy boyz - just an FYI, I've been using the 'alternative' PTs made by MRT in the UK for over a year now, and they are excellent. The current version, the PTx, is a fraction of the size of the AMB PT, comes with the option of case with tabs (same pattern and spacing as the PT, case with no tabs, or shrink wrapped (indoors only, for minis, etc - these are super tiny and weigh like 2 grams). You can specify the lead length, LED color, and the lead wires are user replaceable in case of damage. Oh, if you buy say a case with no tabs, and later decide you need tabs, you just buy a tabbed base and replace it yourself. They offer the option of what are called 'cloned' transponders. You send them an AMB personal you have, they read the transmit info off it (which is not the 7 digit number on the case, or that the scoring program sees) and they make as many PTs with that same transmit info and 7 digit number as you want, and then send your original and the clones back to you. They keep the info on file and you can order additional clones at any time without sending your AMB back in. The last two I bought - about 45 days ago - cost me $68 apiece, for a custom LED color, tabbed case, with a cloned number - which is the most expensive combo. They have a free shipping offer going so I didn't have any extra charges. $37 less than AMB, plus shipping on AMB, for a far superior transponder. And I love having 5 PTs now, and all I have to remember is 6807945 :) If you don't go the cloned route, the PTx comes with 20 numbers programmed in each - each PTx has those same 20 numbers - and you will never bump into those numbers coming from an AMB PT, because MRT has those 20 AMBs in hand. So if 5 of you all have PTx's, you all can just select a different one of the 20 numbers and you're good to go. In addition, each PTx that is not cloned comes with a randomly-generated 21st id number, which theoretically could be duplicated by AMB...but think of the odds of bumping into the same number, at the same track, in the same class....

Anyway, the company is run by two brothers - Terry is the face to the customer - and they are great to deal with. Their product is superior and cheaper, and you're not supporting 'the machine'. MRT makes speed controls, discharger, power supplies and other much more sophisticated RC electronics than a PT, which ain't all that complicated, compared to a brushless speed control, for instance. They have a number of active threads over on RCtech, and Terry posts on them, so you can talk directly to the factory. Very highly recommended!! I think a link to the PTs directly is www.rclaps.com (http://www.rclaps.com)

Sounds like its another good season shaping up for the club outdoors - I hope to get up and run with y'all this year.

No need to reimburse me, Nick, although I do really appreciate the offer. Just consider it a donation to the club.

I just hope the weather holds out so we can get it done on Sunday. I have a buddy who is a pro painter and came with me to the track a few times. He estimated that a crew of 3-5 guys (non pros) could knock it out in about 2 hours per coat (2 coats). If the weather doesn't hold, I have some free time during the week, so I can go over and work on it and maybe even get in a little practice time to boot. (Lord knows I need it!) lol

I am willing to run the 4wd classes again. Mod or stock. If you want the stock class I will be pushing for the brushless equal motor to be legal, I hate brushed motors! Novak says with 6 cells 13.5 is equal to stock. We all know that changes when you run 4 cell pan and 17.5 is equal.

4WD mod, I will only say BRING IT ON :woohoo:

EDM class: Last year we all ran 5800/8.5 brushless. I would be willing to drop to the 19t/10.5 if it will help get more people to run this class.

Sprint Car rules say basically the sky is the limit. I can tell you that on the DR oval all you need is an 8.5. I have tested hotter motors down to 5.5 and I still get equal or better times with 8.5. Its not easy to hook up all that power on offroad rubber tires and the typical DR racing surface, its never good enough for foams or even waffle tires. So I hope this info will help get a few ppl interested in this class. Again I would be willing to drop to the 19t/10.5 rules in other classes if it will help get new ppl but It will be hard to convince Matt (dump) to much power and crash Hunt LOL
Just to make sure u know who I am
