During the Seventies, Citroën made an attempt to market rotary engine vehicles. Engines were produced by Comotor, a joint venture with NSU.
The first vehicle was the M35 based on the Ami 8 with a 497.5 cc mono rotor. Citroën planned to build 500 M35 and to sale it only to selected Citroën faithfull customers. Although Citroën received 5,000 orders, only 267 cars were built between 1969 and 1971
The second vehicle was the GS Birotor, based on a GS, this car had extended fenders and a twin rotor of 497.5 cc each. 847 GS Birotor were built between 1973 and 1975.
1979 was the end of the Wankel research. Citroën made everything to buy back M35 and GS Birotor and destroyed them !

I looked at the pix before I read the text and thought the one on the
left looked like an NSU. Guess I was right! NSU is German, right? What's the connection?
Those models are beautiful - thanks for the history lesson!:thumbsup:

I heard the Mazda rotorys didn't last very long. The bearings would cook at about 30,000 mi. supposedly

Lummox, both of the cars pictured are Citroens. They used a wankel that was jointly designed with NSU. I've seen a GS birotor in the States at several Citroen meets.

I guess I over simplified my statement.
I assumed the joint venture also included the body styling, but that's probably not the case, huh?
Gotta admit though, it looks alot like a Citroen version of an NSU Prinz.
Oh, and I'm talking about the one on the left, the M35.

You've been to several meets? You sound like quite a Citroen fan. Nice!

They are both Citroen styled, AFAIK. The "depression" of the hood between the headlights is a strong Citroen styling cue of this era.

Yes, I am a fan, particularly of the DS.

This is my 1:1 on the day I bought it:
