View Full Version : Building music/Favorite Playlist
Many of you listen to music, maybe even loudly while model building, so I was wondering if you had a favorite 'playlist' or whether you played Star Trek TMP while working on that refit and "Empire Strikes Back" while building a Falcon, or if you just listened to 'whatever'.
I have a playlist and then a 'car' version for CD. I use iToons, so I have a library, and a BUNCH of playlists. Currently my
10 Favorite Building/Hobby tunes right now are:
1. Milano Cool - Arling & Cameron
2. The Livin' End - Hi-Fi Companions
3. Resist - Greg Long
4. Strawberry - Syrup*
5. You Must Learn All Night - Fantastic Plastic Machine*
6. The Man with the Red Face - Laurent Garnier
7. Mint Royal - Phlump
8. Style - De Phazz
9. Human Patterns - Beanfield
10. The Ageing young Rebel - DJ Food w/ Ken Nordine
* - seems to have riffs taken from 1960's era commercial jingles.
WARNING - This music is 'different' and non-offensive but addictive!!
i usually put an old classic horror film in the DVD player for the atmospheric music . also the music from the movie Predator is good , any of the Harryhausen flicks too .

dreamer 2.0 03-21-2008, 04:25 PM Really depends on the mood. Building to music from the source (Star Wars for a SW kit) is good inspiration, but I can't keep recycling the same one or two discs for hours at a time.
I listen to SOMA-FM's "Secret Agent" stream. Found it on iToons! Music I've found from that stream make up a good portion of my current playlist.
Johnnycrash 03-21-2008, 11:30 PM My music lybrary has just over 12,000 songs in it. Everything from punk, rock, country, techno, zydeco... Well, you get the idea. In some cases, I'll select an artist's discography and play away. Sometimes on shuffle. And then sometimes I let the entire library shuffle play. You can get some strange combos that way. One minute is The Clash, then it's a Johnny Cash song, then Daft Punk plays. But I like alot of different types of music, so...
So, to answer your question; I do not have a favourite playlist as such. I play what strikes me at the time. And if nothing strikes me, I play everything.
frankenstyrene 03-22-2008, 08:50 AM Tomb-dead silence
punctuated by
the shriek of the Dremel
the groan of the compressor
the hiss of the airbrush
and yells at the cat
"get the hell off that"
Seaview 03-22-2008, 10:40 AM I'm putting an old VHS player to good use in my model building cottage. The machine works great, but it doesn't rewind. Since last summer, I've played my entire series collections of Land Of The Giants, X-files and Voyage that I recorded off the TV many years ago (commercials included), and am currently playing my Columbia House Lost In Space collection as model building "background company". Occasionally, I'll give myself a treat and put on a classic scifi film instead (Day The Earth Stood Still, 2001, 2010, Them, WotW, Journey/Center/Earth, etc.)
The nice things about a VHS machine that can't rewind is that it's very akin to regular TV, you don't re-watch the same episodes over and over again (except for the scripts of later Voyage episodes), and it's very easy to keep track of what you've already played. :hat:
I'm also a big fan of "golden age" radio shows, and play cassettes of those shows as well (Gildersleeve, The Shadow, Baby Snooks, Sherlock Holmes, etc.).
Model building without that background ambience wouldn't be quite so relaxing and enjoyable of an escape.
sbaxter 03-22-2008, 12:11 PM If I'm in the mood for music, I often play my "Ultimate '80s" playlist (a perpetual work in progress that currently runs about 15 hours long), or my homemade Lost song soundtrack, which runs the gamut from the ridiculous ("Xanadu" — which at least is ELO) to the sublime (including several Patsy Cline tracks and the Blind Boys of Alabama's "I Shall Not Walk Alone.").

i just picked up a DVD of The Phantom Creeps which has all 12 episodes . so that's 4 hours worth of classic universal music .
i think they used the themes from about all of the old Universal monster movies to make up the soundtrack .
i'll be havin' it in the player next modelling session for sure !

El Gato 04-01-2008, 06:50 PM I have seven or eight playlists, from my "faves" to a "very special Weird Al" playlist* where I have the original song followed by the parody. Most often, though I just hit "party mix" on my iTunes and don't worry about it. Most of the time I'm really not listening, anyway... unless it's a song my wife downloaded that I consider besmirches the integrity of my library. I hit the "next" button really fast in that case.
*Word to the wise: I discovered this is not a good playlist to listen to when lifting weights
JeffG 04-01-2008, 07:18 PM The Cure, Depeche Mode, Jay-Z, Gustav Holst, Bear Mcreary, John Williams, Craig Armstrong, Jimmy Hendrix, Kate Bush, Notorious Big, Amy Winehouse-pretty much everything.
darkwanderer 04-02-2008, 02:43 AM I'm more old school. The Beatles (any and all), the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Byrds, Genesis, Pink Floyd, etc. and maybe some Dick Hyman.
almost anything except rap and heavy metal
Plastic Head 04-05-2008, 11:10 PM While I'm scratch building or kitmashing, I listen to Tom Waits.
Esp this song
Tom Waits
Mule Variations (1999)
What's He Building?
What's he building in there?
What the hell is he building
In there?
He has subscriptions to those
Magazines... He never
Waves when he goes by
He's hiding something from
The rest of us... He's all
To himself... I think I know
Why... He took down the
Tire swing from the Peppertree
He has no children of his
Own you see... He has no dog
And he has no friends and
His lawn is dying... and
What about all those packages
He sends. What's he building in there?
With that hook light
On the stairs. What's he building
In there... I'll tell you one thing
He's not building a playhouse for
The children what's he building
In there?
Now what's that sound from under the door?
He's pounding nails into a
Hardwood floor... and I
Swear to god I heard someone
Moaning low... and I keep
Seeing the blue light of a
T.V. show...
He has a router
And a table saw... and you
Won't believe what Mr. Sticha saw
There's poison underneath the sink
Of course... But there's also
Enough formaldehyde to choke
A horse... What's he building
In there. What the hell is he
Building in there? I heard he
Has an ex-wife in some place
Called Mayors Income, Tennessee
And he used to have a
consulting business in Indonesia...
but what is he building in there?
What the hell is building in there?
He has no friends
But he gets a lot of mail
I'll bet he spent a little
Time in jail...
I heard he was up on the
Roof last night
Signaling with a flashlight
And what's that tune he's
Always whistling...
What's he building in there?
What's he building in there?
We have a right to know...
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away...

dgtrekker 04-16-2008, 03:40 PM I just got the 80 GB Zune and I'm currently loading it up with music and playlists. I think thats the great thing about the MP3 player, you get tired of listing to your music in one order you can go back an mix it up. My stuff ranges from classic, to soundtracks, to the Beatles and Kiss. Anyone seeing my collection would probably think I was crazy!
El Gato 04-16-2008, 10:01 PM 20. ICEHOUSE.
Wow, someone else remembers this group. Makes you feel like you gotta be crazy, baby, for using that electric blue on that model....
PhilipMarlowe 04-18-2008, 01:08 PM I've been pleasently surprised by the selection of full soundtracks on Itunes, I've collected soundtracks albums since I was a kid, since I threw away my records decades ago, I've enjoyed downloading classic soundtracks recently including Forbidden Planet(great modeling music!), Sorcerer, Escape from New York, and Cat People. The only thing I've looked for and haven't found is the Silent Running soundtrack.
Somebody actually BOUGHT a Zune!!!!!!!!!

I've been doing the same thing, in fact Amazon has quite a good selection of downloadable music going too at pretty reasonable pricing.
dgtrekker 04-19-2008, 12:59 PM Somebody actually BOUGHT a Zune!!!!!!!!!
In fact I've bought two and I gave my daughter the Ipod, because the Zune is soooo much better, esp. for watching video.
fluke 04-19-2008, 05:03 PM Hey El Gato!
I would be a 'primitave man' if I didn't right?
Funny thing about the 80's....its either very good or its rotten.
Seems like Australia and New Zealand produced some of the best in those times and giving synth's to the English was like giving fire water to the American Natives .....oooh that was bad!
