pejota 03-20-2008, 10:10 PM Getting back into RC after a VERY long time...
I have a Bolink All Star Sprinter kit on the way and am looking to pick up a Bolink Legends as well. They seem to be simple, cheap and popular for Spec racing...
What i'd like some help with is what batteries and motors should i look at?
For now, i'll just be running the cars in parking lots because there aren't any on-road/oval tracks along the Treasure Coast here in Florida. (Indian River and St. Lucie Counties; Vero Beach specifically)
What i would like to use are the popular choices for Spec racing around the country in the event i move or more people come out of the woodwork around here.
Thanks in advance!!
blacksheep 03-21-2008, 03:15 PM Our Legends class is "spec" to a point, but it is not geared towards beginners. We have a good group of guys that really enjoys the vintage looks of the Legends and the fact that we have awesome, close racing every week. We run 4-cell NiMH packs with no capacity limit and 13.5 brushless motors and have been doing so for about a year and a half.
Since you are planning on picking up a Legend kit, you might want to check out my site RCLEGENDS.COM (http://www.rclegends.com).
omnis85 03-21-2008, 05:31 PM another alternative to spec racing is the Solid SK cars. You can check them out at www.kskts.com these are very popular cars and they look cool. We offer a club discount if bought in qty's to get the class going. If more info is needed contact me at kenkerttula@yahoo.com
Butters16 03-21-2008, 06:18 PM We have been doing some testing at our track with a Spec Battery(1600) with a 17.5 Brushless system , Keeps cost down and your not in the battery war ever time a bigger battery comes out.
pejota 03-21-2008, 08:43 PM This is kinda what i was looking for.... recommendations on batteries and motors...
I see some classes are Trinity Spec batteries, Windtunnel batteries and what not...
How nice are brushless vs. brushed motors? Is there really that much of a difference in cost vs. maintenance vs. longevity?
For right now i'm planning on following the rules found on the rclegends website (great site btw, VERY helpful).
Any other rules posted on websites i can check out?
And thanks to the suggestions so far... very much appreciated!
hobbyten 03-21-2008, 09:53 PM just for your fyi i've been running the same 13.5 bl motor for the last 21/2 yrs. and all i've done to it is oil the bearing once or twice and yr. with no drop in perf. this last yr. we've been running this 13.5 in spec with 1600 spec batts. and spec tires. this motor is the original non sintered small bearing motor. i have yet to see one give up the ghost.

Same here on the 13.5. Been running it since they came out and haven't touched it. Performance is still like the first day I ran it. In that time I've seen the brushed guys cut comms and replace brushes on a weekly basis until they finally decided it wasn't worth it. Now our Legends class is all brushless.

Where did you find the Bolink Sprinter kit?
Thank you
Dave
pejota 03-26-2008, 01:59 PM Found it on ebay... NIB, but not sealed. Not a bad price either... Looking forward to painting the body on this thing too. A lot of good pics on the net for inspiration.
charger01 03-26-2008, 02:03 PM we have a new spec class where I race. We use 6-cell spec packs(1600) and the black tamiya rs-540s sport tuned motor. The racing is fast, close, and cheap!
Raceman 05-04-2008, 12:08 AM I just wondered if the Venom 21d motor is almost the same as the Trinity Spec motor especially as for RPMs out of the box.
Raceman 05-19-2008, 04:22 PM Huh just forget about the venom motor.
Charger 01: is the black tamiya motor named Lightly Tuned?
nutz4rc 07-28-2008, 08:06 PM We run Legend as a spec class. Trinity 1600 spec batts, Trinity spec motor, spec tires, and no modifications to chassis. We do allow turnbuckles instead of the wires for steering. This fall we are allowing Novak 13.5 EX motors and Novak XBR ESCs. We have tested the race director's car (BL equipped) and my spec Legend and we ran almost identical times lap after lap. As others have stated the brushless is so reliable that it lets guys have more time to work on car and driving. Also a reduction in cost, no brushes, cutting coms, and then buying new motors frequently.

This ls like a shot in the dark but, ...
We started racing 21 turn Spec last November and are fringing on moving on up to 17.5 in lue of the price of batteries. Has anyone tried running 17.5 brushless using the 1600 packs? What was the significant difference between the motors?

R&D when ran the 13.5 with the 1600 along with the 21 turn spec eng and the 13.5 was just a little faster so i would think the 17.5 might be a litter slower than the spec motor.

...so how long was the run??? did it make 4 minutes?
Eric L
Benracin' 11-16-2008, 09:39 PM Can anyone tell me if increasing the timing on a 17.5 would cause 1600 spec packs to dump after about 4 minutes. I had this problem with 3 different packs that were good before with no problem making 5 minutes.
EricL 11-16-2008, 09:44 PM yes it will
increase in timing will create more amp draw...therefore it needs to eat more juice to keep it going. Thus ...battery dumpage
Eric L
Benracin' 11-16-2008, 10:01 PM that's what I thought, thanks Eric
Benracin' 11-16-2008, 10:02 PM Eric, do you cycle your spec packs?
EricL 11-16-2008, 10:05 PM Eric, do you cycle your spec packs?
most definately....when I'm not lazy
EricL 11-16-2008, 10:23 PM cycle em at 6amps discharge at 15 amps w/flex on around 5 or 6
cut off at 3.6
peak detection
.06 volts
cycle 3 times that way.
3rd time is the sweet spot!
charge for racin at 6 amps NO FLEX!!!
RE-PEAK AT 4TO 4.5 AMPS
Benracin' 11-16-2008, 10:23 PM Any idea on setting for a turbo30 to cycle them, also for charging and do you use flex? Thanks,
Greg
Benracin' 11-16-2008, 10:25 PM man your good, answer before I ask!!!
EricL 11-16-2008, 10:33 PM man your good, answer before I ask!!!
lmao that's what happens when I drink to much mountain dew

was wonderin' if I could quote my own quote...
this set up I laid out is whut 'I' use...factory specifcations from Turbo are slightly different on peak votage....exp. .03
also...they do not recommend 6amp charge.
also...when in a pickle....and for best optimum performance out of the battery( and every pickle is different pending on race scedules) the best time to peak is the race b4 yours!!! If you time it right....maybe 2 minutes into the race before your race!

Benracin' 11-16-2008, 10:40 PM thanks, I appreciate the info, will give it a try.

EricL 11-17-2008, 06:44 AM one more thing Benracing'
when you do cycle your packs...its good to know just how the voltage is dropping when it is in discharge mode. It helps to let you know which battery holds the most voltage as it is discharging. I've been doing this lately, and once it starts to discharge, (now you gotta watch it like a hawk now) check every 30 second intervals to see what the numbers are. Mind you in 'real run time' the voltage discharge in a battery varies and 15 amps is just for a simulated run. 'Real run time' can be amplified up to 18amps if not higher. And... the hotter the battery after run... the faster it is discharging! In theory, we use 15 amps but after several tests and noting probabilities... (...and I know I'm gonna be havin this rubbed in my face) real run time can discharge a battery almost as high as 22amps. Now, this depends on amp drawn from your motor as well as ESC and Servo usage...under load(shut Up Chip...jk) .(<<<this is the part I failed to calculate***servo load) But for this cycle time I count voltage drop.
For example:
30 sec - 4.82
60- 4.78
90- 4.75
120 - 4.73
150- 4.72
180- 4.71
210- 4.68
240- 4.65
270- 4.59
300- 4.52
keep in mind...you only have to check up to 300 seconds and cut off volts go down as far as 3.6v. However if you are curious...keep countin'
This particular battery...I would've won with...had I not got turned around in turn 2. It was strong enough to aid me into going back to the front once again. As you can see there was plenty of volts....
Chip( I know you are reading this...) this particular pack was the Yellow Jacket Spec pack! I was amazed with it!!! I also have the Purple/Gray Spec packs too. Amazaziiiing!
With my red label packs. I can't get that kinda volts outta them. I can get close but not that close!

BoneSpec 11-23-2008, 03:25 AM Thanks for giving out my secrets :)
Tonight, after winning the A-main I still had 55 seconds @ 15 amps left in my pack with a cutoff of 3.6V pack voltage.
But this pack lasts 405 seconds at 15 amps discharge. I shall play with discharge rates to find out about what we are drawing on average.
Myself, I see 20 amps discharge cycling a bit much, no need to overheat a few packs and have them short out....like three packs I have sitting here torn apart :(
Tonight I was charging at 4 amps, step up to 6 amps, then if in a panic mode (haha Eric was freaking!) I might hit 7-8 amps. Allow pack to cool, then when the race before me starts I'd hit the pack on Integy Torpedo, not sure if it's working but it seems too.
I set the track record and fast lap BEFORE my torpedo. but with torpedo I did rest fast lap (4.563 now down to 4.540) and had a shot at lap record. Got tangled twice, still won.....it happens.

after calming down from last nights fiascko! It dawned on me Chip, did you put your record on the board? I forgot to check!
after the 3rd heat.. that I finally decided to get a good run in...I had 78 seconds off of that yellow pack. However...traffic sucked out there during qualifying... couldn't reach my potential with that run!
However Chip, I do have a spec question
...To be continued!
EricL 11-23-2008, 08:49 AM Figured I'd clear the board so as not to cornfuse anybuddy....namely me!
I am workin' on my front end. Now, I've decided to go with the long King Pin kit for the front(my idea of a hop up for my car
...however, there are no instructions ( as usual):freak: on where all the shims are suppose to go nor where to put shims when you need them or not.
I'd appreciate the help in this matter. Remember, I'm a patient man...You have til Saturday to tell me how to install 'em and to also tell me the tuning options I may have with them.
thanks for your help!:woohoo:

always 2nd best to Chip(dam it!):dude:
BoneSpec 11-23-2008, 04:28 PM I'll get pics of my front end and post them.........or you could just ask Roger :)
Yes, I did put my record on the board, but you also had a 4.57 in third qualifier, spliting hairs at that point!
