Any of them can work. If you page through the board you'll see many many threads about which car is best. I would check those out.

If you're trying to learn basic vehicle control you can practice on a tennis court, but otherwise it isn't of any value to practice on a surface that you won't be racing on.

This is the BEST answer to your question, if you buy brand X and NO one at the track runs it you will find little help with set up and probably no parts when you need them.....IMOsee if you can find out what most of the guys are running at the track you plan on racing that way they can give you some good setup advice also atleast get a ksg, rip, raptor, custom works or hyperdrive pro3

The L4 is a good , solid reliable car with lots of hop up potential plus it is very reasonable when compared to the other cars.

If your budget allows it buy a new car whenever possible. If you are new to the hobby resist the urge to buy a used car unless you personally know the seller. A poorly maintained pan car could have a cracked chassis, bent motor pod plates, bad bearings, or any other number of minor issues. Nothing will frustrate you more than trying to fix a "tweaked" car if you don't know what to look for.

As to which car to buy, listen to the majority and see what is popular at the track you are racing and in the class you are planning to race it. Unless you are planning to travel to multiple tracks right now, stick with something that other people at your track can help you with. Also if you decide that r/c oval isn't for you, it will be easier to sell locally since that car is well supported at your track.

The best thing you can do to practice is spend as much time at the track as you can. Most tracks that I've ever raced at open up hours before actual controlled racing begins. This will give you time to setup your car. Usually there will be die hard racers there early that may be able to help you.

If you do want to practice on a tennis court or parking lot you should take time to prepare the surface for racing. Prep would include find a reasonably large/level surface, sweeping off loose dirt/rocks, and spraying down the pavement with something sticky like a soda/water mixture. If you are running a pan car, you probably would need to buy different tires and setup your car different than if it were running on carpet. The time and expense to prep the car/surface may be better spent driving to the carpet track. However, there are many places in the country that do race outside or in parking lots.

One last thing. If you are really stuck and there is no one locally to help you, there are companies/individuals that will setup your car for you. If you look through the Hobbytalk oval threads you should be able to find them.
