I am looking for a good tool or method to counter sink the 4-40 flat head screws for sevro mounting on my chassis. I have one counter sink but it just does not work on graphite.

Thanks in advance

Larry B,
You need a multy flute, min. 4, solid carbide, 82 degree counter sink, to do the job correctly. Use the highest speed on your drill press. You can get them from McMaster Carr or MSC.

If you want a tool that the manufacturersuse, try the Niftech 82 degree countersink on this page, it's perfect every time, just not cheap.

If you have a Sears Hardware store near you or a hardware store that has knowledgable people, see if they have a better quality countersink tool. You can also try contacting a local tool and die company and they may be able to point you in the right direction. If you spend a little more on a quality tool, you will end up spending less time using it and less money in ruined parts.

There is a reason that machine shops use a countersink. You can get a carbide three flute for $14.56 from McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/). Search for part# 29485A11 . It is self centering, where a burr isn't. While you are there, pick up a 3mm Carbide drill bit. drills like butter. Part#28595A41

You will never wear them out!

Yeah - just like niftech to sell a $15 tool from McMaster-Carr for $29.

I have this tool, it's carbide, and doesn't look like anything in that catalog, for any price, and a 2, 3, or 4 flute c'sink will not be as smooth. Ho-Rah

The good chassis companies do not use a countersink.. They have the countersinks machined as the chassis is being machined.. If you countersink after, no mater how self centering the tool is the hole could be off.. It works fine for servo mounts or any other hole that doesnt need to be dead on..

I have a buddy of mine who is a machinist make my countersinks when i need then.. They are done out of carbide and last forever..
