About the only benefit I could imagine would be to reduce the amount of dust that gets sucked up into the motor. The downside, it reduces cooling air flow to the motor. I always remove them because I'm more concerned with heat than dirt. I think their purpose for being there has more to do with the cars being targeted for children.

Would have to agree AFX. Since these are "made" for the kids, can't let them burn those fingers you know. Heck, if you can sue McD's because the coffee you just ordered is too hot, watch out slot car makers! :devil: rr

If you want to have some fun, cut a small square flap in the heat shield and hinge it so it rubs on the armature. You get a little blower sound. Varying the size of the flap will change the sound. I did this on a supercharged Trans Am I had years ago. I eventually removed it before some club members beat on me. :p
