What way do you move the timing ring to advance timing? Looking at the end bell clockwise or counter clockwise. Does it really help or does it just change your rollout?

Stop trying to cheat.

If you are calling the black plastic end the endbell, counter.

A lot of people say it doesn't really do much..
However... you don't see many motors that aren't cranked..
Are they doing it because everyone else does?
You're just going to have to experiment with it.
Two of the fastest guys I see race each week..
One tweeks, one takes it out of the package.
They both are really, really fast...

But with as much traffic as the timing issue has generated,
I think the best answer is....... you got to mess with it yourself
to draw your own opinion... sorry. That's the way I see it..
Maybe someone else can matter of factly give you an answer..

I have left mine at the factory settings, from what I have read on other posts it sounds like all it does is move the sweet spot so you have to change your gearing, not really that much improved performance. You know how it is though with RC racers, everyone thinks they have to find an edge, time would probably be better spent working on driving time and chassis set up. IMO

Just like the brushed... turn-up the timing, gain RPM and lose torque! ;)

Its not something i want to do but i like to see if my fellow racers are

I am researching this because when i rollout where everybody else does i come off the track 30 to 50 degrees cooler. I have to rollout almost 30 points higher to get any motor heat. So I am wondering what they are doing that i am not . My lap times go up with more gear but this don't explain the major difference in rollout and motor temp

Are you using the same speed control as them?
If your timing is all the way up, one tab on the timing ring will be about half hidden behind the motor wire connector on the right.

They are using gtb I am using the 4-cell gtb.

Seriously...
Don't get too hung up on it...
Like I said before, I've seen the track record set with
an out of the package motor... Seen it matched with a cranked one.

Best thing for you to do is just go ahead and crank it all the way.
Take 20 points away, and see what happens.
Just watch your laptimes, and dropoff.

Don't forget... some motors come already cranked.
Follow what Tommy said, about the location of the
little slot behind the soldering terminal... that's about maxed.
Don't force it.

I do not think "gearing towards a temp" is what you need to do. When you dun your rollout and your temps are lower what are your laptimes, how does it finish. That is how you should be gearing. If I am not mistaken, use the temp as a "check" to make sure you are not over-geares and thus going to cause a failure.

You'd turn it counter-clockwise. You can only go so far.

As a note: My 13.5 is cranked. I'm not sure it's done any good. My 17.5 is out of the package- ran awesome for a 17.5. 10.5, mine are cranked, feel it has helped on our tracks in the area.

Going by motor temp to figure rollout is about worthless. Lap times are all that matter. Motor temp will give you a good indication if your car is working well. Say you run 3.00 rollout and the motor come off the track 130 degrees. You change the setup for the next race, but leave the rollout the same. The motor comes off the track 150 degrees your car wasn't working as well, but how did that tell you the gear ration was wrong for the track. It may have been to high for your ill handeling car, but rollout is not what the motor temp should be used for on a good handeling car. If your car isn't working well, yes you may need to keep track of the motor temp to keep it from shutting down.

My 13.5 motor is ran just the way it came out of the package. Sonny Brown said last year to leave them stock, and thats what I stuck with.

Raced at 3 BRL Races, made 3 A-mains...qualified 3rd twice.

Keep working on your car Little Buddy, you'll find much more speed there, then in timing!!

Mine is "as is" too, little buddy.... I was just commenting that the majority
of the guys I see, the motors are cranked to around the first solder post..
I see guys in the A every week, with both setups... but more cranked
than UNcranked...
