Hey all
Have trouble's with the valves on this Briggs 16.5 Hp. The tappet on the
Exhaust valve I believe the one with the steel push rod? It was loose enough to spin right off the push rod WHAT THE HECK??? I was doing a head gasket job on this and found it that way. Any suggestion how it got that way? Also when you do the setting on the valve's do you set them with the tappet nut?

Thanks Bucko

The valves need periodic adjustments, if you go long enough they can get pretty loose. You may also want to check and make sure the valve is not sticking in the valve guide and is seating all the way, that can cause excess clearance as well.

Adjustment is kind of model specific, post model type and code and I am sure we can get you a little more specific procedure to follow.

Recheck the valve settings making sure you are 1/4" past TDC on the Compression stroke. Sounds like the compression release is not working and if you have too much clearance on the valves it won't.

Exhaust pipe and mufflers get pretty hot, it's not unusual to see them glow in the dark or in subdued light.

Hey 30yeartech Its not going so good. I might be getting the compresion stroke mixed up not shure about that How can I tell if it's a compresion stroke or not? Never was very good with that. The exaist was cherry red and some spurts of flame comeing out theflange where it bolts up to the engine..

The compression stroke comes right after the intake valve closes and the piston comes up in the cylinder. Make sure you are rotating the flywheel in the direction it turns when the engine is running.

Hey all
Every thing is good. I had the engine running for a while and runs good. Thanks for that info 30yeartech I thought I might of set the vavles on the intake stroke but that was not the case. Took my time and redone everything and turned out well. That was my first time setting the vavles on mower engines.Next time should'nt be as bad again thanks for all your help...
