It says it reads to 230F but shows over 400 in the pics.In ho if
you are over 230 you are in trouble anyway I guess.

Non contact thermometers are extremely handy. HarborFreight puts them all on sale from time to time, including the higher end units with the built-in laser pointer. They also sell multimeters dirt cheap. They are definitely worth what you pay for them, but don't expect HP or Tektronix quality for $3. A temp gauge and a multimeter are two good things to have in your pit box.
