All,
The racing season starts soon here at The Grove in beautiful South Carolina. For those who have not been, The Grove is a high banked concrete oval with a 365 foot run line, top of the line line driver's stand, covered pits, and well stocked hobby shop. The track is a bit on the bumpy side, but a major benefit is that the regulars are very nice and will help you with setting up your ride. Oval is experiencing a bit of a renaissance here and we all want to keep it growing.
We have a very active forum on Carolinas RC (http://www.carolinasrc.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=13). There is always some nonsense going on, but track side we are all fast friends. (Am I on top of the puns or what?)
The classes we run are a bit unusual:
8 Second NASTruck (The most popular class):
Any 1/10 scale oval chassis. Body must be NASTruck style only (McAllister Recommended).
Any Motor (Novak 4300 brushless or Trinity Spec recommended)
Any speed controller
Any 4-cell Sub-C battery (3800mAh or higher recommended).
Batteries may use plugs or be "hard-wired".
Open Gear Ratio
Tailgate may not be cut out.
Spoiler is recommended.
Any radial tires (BSR or Race Tread SPEC radials recommended).
Min. weight with transponder 2lbs 9 oz.
There is a minimum laptime of 8.00 seconds, any faster and the lap will not count. Therefore, the object is to turn consistent 8.1s to 8.4s without going under ('breaking out'). Heats are 6 minutes and the A Main is 10.
RC10L3s or L4s (with the 6 cell tray) are recommended as they are inexpensive, parts are widely available, and the infield grass does not 'grab' the chassis as much (be careful with a 4 cell tray in a slider).
7 Second NASCAR:
Any 1/10 scale oval chassis. Body must be NASCAR style only.
Any Motor (Novak 4300 brushless, Trinity Spec, 19 turn recommended)
Any speed controller
Any 4-cell Sub-C battery (3800mAh or higher recommended).
Batteries may use plugs or be "hard-wired".
Open Gear Ratio
Rear of body may be cut out.
Spoiler or wing is recommended.
Rear window holes permitted for wing wire penetration.
Any radial tires (BSR or Race Tread SPEC radials recommended).
Min. weight with transponder 2lbs 9 oz.
There is a minimum laptime of 7.00 seconds, any faster and the lap will not count. Therefore, the object is to turn consistent 7.1s to 7.4s without going under ('breaking out'). Heats and mains are 5 minutes. We may allow the Race Spec 3200 in this class as well, it's still being determined.
21.5 Race Spec
Any 1/10 scale oval chassis. Body must be NASCAR style only.
Motor - Novak 21.5 Brushless.
Motors may use battery plugs or direct solder connections.
Orion or Peak Performance "Race Spec" 3200 Mah, LiPo Battery ONLY.
Batteries may use plugs or be "hard-wired".
Open gear ratio.
Rear window holes permitted for wing wire penetration.
Rear of body may be cut out.
Wings are recommended.
Tires: BSR radials of any type.
Motors must start the race at ambient temperature (no motor chilling)
All cars must have high density foam bumpers that overhang the CF bumper plate.
Sensored Electronic Speed controllers only.
This seems to turn 6.3 seconds in initial testing, 1.655 ratio on spec cap tires.
If you'd like to swing by for a weekend you can look here (http://www.carolinasrc.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5747&KW=OldSchool) for a basic setup.
Also, three make a class, so if you have a few friends and want to run something else, then by all means bring it. I will advise you that The Grove is a big lonely track with only three cars on it though...
Finally, there is also a decent off road track as well: Stock Truck, Pro Truck, 4WD Mod, 1/8th scale buggy, Monster Truck / Truggy... If it has 4 wheels we can probably find a class for it.
