What are you guys opinions on the PWM type controllers versus the power resistor type. I know the function and advantages/disadvantages of the two types, I'm more looking for an idea on the smoothness of control from those who have alot of experience. Thoughts?

Nobody uses an electronic controller?

The only EC I own is rectifier (diode) based. Good for high end mag cars but too touchy for most else.

I've used and am waiting to get a Professor Motor EC, for the money (I think $119) there is no comparison IMO, they work well with all types of cars and their controls for sensitivity and brake are super-responsive. Smoothness and control is entirely relative to driving style, the cars, and the track.

As an observer, I'd say the biggest reason there are people who have trouble with electronic units is the fact that they don't fully understand their own driving style so they can't dial into it. Once that bridge is crossed, very few turn back.

Aces, the only PWM controller that has been used in HO to any extent was the Parma EC. It suffered from some component sizing issues that doomed it, so I don't know if PWM ever got a fair shake at the wee scale. It's popularity in model trains is unmistakable. There are obvious concerns about high frequency components from the PWM circuitry affecting the smaller and lower inductance HO motors and manifesting itself as greater heat build up in the arm, but only testing would really tell. There is a firm in the UK that is offering a PWM controller today so maybe Deane (Montoya) would have some experience with it.

The vast majority of HO electronic controller are simple transistor based linear amplifiers (Difalco, PM new electronic) or forward biased rectifier diode based units (older PM units, Omni, etc.).

Yea, I'm just curious because I have built one for personal use. It is in the testing phase still but it is operational. I have it on the bench at work right now as I'm working with one of our electrical engineers to properly size my components. It would seem to me that PWM would give a much smoother throttle control since you are not varying voltage but rather the frequency at which it is delivered. This should in theory allow for better control into and out of corners. Just something I'm playing around with and was looking for some feedback from users. Thanks guys.

The wiperless transistor designs from Theison and J&S (Mullens)
are the best. The 15 band Difalco is the best wiper style handcontrol.
The Ruddock works good when new but is tempermental as it gets older.

Where can I find more information on a Theison Controller?

Thanks, Robbie
