View Full Version : New Micro VCS shocks
cheatr71 03-06-2008, 10:28 PM Here's a good question for you manufacturers out there. Why doesn't somebody come up with a new micro vcs shock that doesn't have to be rebuilt every week or two. Assoc. came up with the VCS2 upgrade with bladder, but I don't understand why nobody has done the same for the side shocks? Of course I mean for pan cars only. I'm not the best at building side shocks to begin with and the bladder in the center shock has made it alot easier. I just want to be able to enjoy racing the car longer and not spending hours building shocks right. Thanks for any insight. Jason.
J-Dub Racing 03-06-2008, 10:38 PM Get a set of IRS Top Gun shocks. If you really want you can set it and forget it. But if you want to go fast, rebuild them every week. It usually only takes about 20 min or so once you get used to it.
KenBajdek 03-06-2008, 10:45 PM I second the IRS side shocks. If you don't like building them every week than these are the answer. RC oval has a great step by step for building these right. Works every time.
katf1sh 03-06-2008, 11:14 PM new silva shocks coming soon as well as the hot bodies shocks! check them out at jph racing! awesome side shocks!
James35 03-06-2008, 11:25 PM CRC Durashocks also hold their oil well.
ARMY of 1 03-07-2008, 12:09 AM I still use the RC18T rear shock (team version).... It takes a couple minutes to convert them, and they dont leak at all...
swtour 03-07-2008, 01:52 AM I've been using the CRC Durashocks for a couple years..and as bad as I punish my stuff they have held up really well.
The NEW HotBodies Shocks look pretty sweet too - and I hear they build really well and feel super smooth.

J-Dub Racing 03-07-2008, 11:11 AM How will you connect the hotbodies shock as a side shock?
swtour 03-07-2008, 11:40 AM The eyelet pops right onto a ball stud...
Its hard to visuilize the hot bodies shock "size". It looks so much like a center shock that when I look at it I think its too big for the sides. Can someone post a picture of the hot bodies and assc side shock side by side??
Thanks Wade
garacer08 03-07-2008, 02:43 PM It may be a little bigger, but it would be better than using the HPI center shock as side shocks. We use the center shocks as sides in nitro and it works very well. The only thing I did not like at first was the radical angle the shock was in but it does not upset the car. I bet the Hot bodies shock would be the ticket!
MIKE VALENTINE 03-07-2008, 03:05 PM Does this help
pmsimkins 03-07-2008, 03:08 PM i could probably go to the site and figure this out, but does it accept our standard side shock springs? I assume not.
MIKE VALENTINE 03-07-2008, 03:10 PM Pat, I hope so
pmsimkins 03-07-2008, 03:12 PM Does this help
That does a lot, thanks Mike. Yeah looks like it would accept the springs based on that perspective.
"Frank Ulbrik" 03-07-2008, 03:32 PM yep, takes the same springs.
pmsimkins 03-07-2008, 03:48 PM I see the picture is from JPH, but I couldn't actually find them for sale on their website. Are they avaiable yet? If so is there a link.
I can't go to the Hot Bodies website. My internet at work thinks it's porn.

Anyone with a link?
swtour 03-07-2008, 04:26 PM This is the message Jake posted on Our message board...
Just got in the new Hotbodies micro shocks in kit form (meaning everything to build one shock is in one bag!).
Selling them for $19.99 each. Please call the shop 707-586-3375 as they are not yet up on the website.
Thanks,
Jake
I know he had looked up all the needed parts for one of our racers - and I believe he has put them together in kit form (since HotBodies doesn't sell them that way)...
I believe these are the same shocks on Scot's Stryker Conversion...

pmsimkins 03-07-2008, 04:27 PM Ah I see. No wonder I can't find them anywhere.
cheatr71 03-07-2008, 09:12 PM i'm not really complaining obout the top gun shocks or the dura shocks, the foams do wear out very quickly. Thanks to everybody who replied, I heard from jphracing today and he said there so good that they can't keep em in stock, I just wanted something different the pistons on the top gun shocks seem to bend easy in a side collision, which happens alot at Tri-clone latemodel class.
garacer08 03-07-2008, 10:21 PM I like the top guns and the CRC shocks but you are right about bending the shafts. I have bent them after running 100+ laps on my .12 nitro with out ever hitting the wall. Never had a problem with my electric cars or my .09. I think these new shocks will be my next shock to try out.
JPH Racing 03-08-2008, 12:56 AM Ok guys, here's the info on these shocks.
We blew through the first batch and are awaiting the next one. I found out today it will be about 2 weeks. Longer than I was first told, but that seems to be the way things happen these days!
When this next batch arrives, I will have them up on the JPH website (and easy to find!) I've started a list of racers wanting them and orders will be filled on a first come-first served basis.
These shocks are really awesome. Think mini HPI center shock. Very smooth, easy to build and lasts 3 to 5 race days (or more) between rebuilds.
They fit on most 1/10 and 1/12 oval (and on-road) cars. One side is a standard ballcup, but the other is a molded part that snaps onto a std 4-40 ballstud. The real bummer is they don't fit on our Maverick cars! (yet)
Anyway, that's the scoop! Post or e-mail me for more info.
Sorry for the delay in responding. Thanks Joe for posting up the original info and pics!!
Alan Behler 03-08-2008, 06:25 AM jake,
anyway of a cap change?
we need our side shocks about 3.30 inches long
cant wait to try these:)
JSJ Racing 03-08-2008, 11:14 AM http://www.hbeurope.com/graphics/kitpages/61600/_MG_4306e.jpg
These are made by HPI. Hotbodies web site says Hotbodies is a brand of hpi racing.
Cheatr71-use the stock ae pistons ,take them down to .225.never seen a irs shaft bend but the shafts do gall from the setscrew which seems the stainless is soft.
McLin 03-08-2008, 02:13 PM I wonder if Hot Bodies realize that if they got on the stick and made these things available, they would probable sell a few hundred sets of them!
k7king 03-10-2008, 12:39 PM I have them on my car and the normal side springs fit right on.......damn good shock ....

Homer what you need to do is at the eylet end cut the eyelet off then drill out the drill a hole in the center. thread a 4-40 screw through add a nut on the other side to lock it down, thread on a ball stud and your done

WOW! When I talked to Stormer Friday, they had 50 or more in stock! :freak:
Tower Hobbies and Horizon list them but they are out of stock.
McLin 04-29-2008, 07:32 PM While we are all waiting for them to get back in stock, here is something you can read: http://rc-oval.com/
Jamie Hanson 04-29-2008, 07:53 PM I know the Associated 12R5 was released on Friday. It has the new Associated pass threw shock which is something I have wanted for years. There should be no rebound at all which I think is a good thing. Question is, has anyone tried them as side shocks yet?
OvalTrucker 04-29-2008, 07:59 PM Thanks for the link McLin.
Now I want them even more!!
barnz2 04-29-2008, 08:16 PM Nice article McLin. Thanks for the link.
Tim
McLin 04-29-2008, 08:32 PM Dang Jamie, just when I think I have it figured out, you change the rules LOL !!
But, like I said, I'm certified.
Tornado_Racing 04-30-2008, 07:06 PM Hey Lin,
Ya know Ti-Nitride shafts work really good in those shocks! No need to polish and they are silky smooth.
Look for the Ti-Nitride shock shafts, ball cup end caps, pistons, and Ti-Nitride upper camber pins real soon................
Jakes Performance Hobbies in Rohnert Park CA,has a big box full of the new HPI side shocks and he ships daily so if you guys are looking for them give him a call at 707-586-3375 or hit up Jphracing.com. they go for 19.99 per shock and I have to say they are pretty sweet! I know a bunch of guys were calling the shop yesterday from all over the US and stocking up so if you want some of this batch you better act quick!!!

DARKSIDE DAVE 05-03-2008, 12:40 PM I Now I Got Mine From Jake Last Night At About 6:00 Pm And He Still Had A Few Left Get Them While They Are Hot
Josh Keller 05-07-2008, 11:00 AM .....
Tornado_Racing 05-07-2008, 11:13 AM How about some Ti-Nitride T-plate pivot balls too. Just an idea.
Josh
HD and IRS hardcoated/teflon aluminum balls work really well in the t-plate. Don't hink a steel ball is needed.
