Does anyone have a good method of removing the factory painted stripes from a car without removing the base coat?

I remove the stripes on the JL Mustangs with mineral spirits.

I rub it with a q-tip soaked in mineral spirits, then rub it with the dry side. The stripes seem to come off when rubbing with the dry side. You need to be gentle and patient. I did go through the paint once. I have done many successfully though too.
