View Full Version : 2008 Royal Oak Grand National
jbell31 03-04-2008, 03:50 PM The Royal Oak Grand National
Sanctioned by QSAC
Hosted by Great Lakes Quarter Scale Racers in conjunction with the annual "Woodward Dream Cruise"
What: The 20th Annual Royal Oak Grand National.
When: August 15th and 16th 2008
Where: 13 Mile and Woodward in the Northwood shopping center parking lot.
Classes: Grand National and Sprint car.
Cost: 50$ entry fee and each entry will receive a $190 check. If you are running both Sprint and Grand National you will receive a check for both. When filling out the form for both you will only pay $50, not $100. Spec fuel C-16 w/Amsoil is provided for practice and race day.
Rules: All Grand National cars will be running the 2008/new 8.5 QSAC approved restrictor plate. Sprint cars will be running 2008/new 10.5 QSAC approved restrictor plate. All other QSAC rules will apply for each class.
Sponsors: Sprint cars will get a Lexan painted side dam provided by the sponsor. You will be able to mount to your existing wing. GN will receive an entire body that you will need to fit on your chassis. These will be provided to you on Friday morning.
Track: The track will have a new design compared to the last 19 years. There will be rumble strips in the corners, attached to plywood with a single board down the middle. The outside boards and fence will be the same as last year. It will look like a big "I" with no tires or boards to run into. You will have more room to maneuver in the straits.
Promoter: The promoter will be providing a more family oriented atmosphere with a moon walk, pizza/snow cone wagon and other events. This will help attract more visitors and keep them around. The bidding on of drivers will take place online. There is a minimum amount for every driver, but if one is preferred over another the price can go into the thousands.
Why: This is the kick off of fund raising for the "Give-A-Christmas-All Year" foundation. Our club has participated in this worth while event since it began 19 years ago.
jbell31 03-04-2008, 04:01 PM Here is the Form and documentation for the ROGN. I will be posting on the QSAC and GLQSR site is the next week or so. PLease note that you do not have to pay $50 for each class, just $50 per person. I will correct the form when I go back to work. I left it there and retyped the whole thing, so I don't want to do it again....

IN2RACIN 03-04-2008, 04:29 PM $380.00 to race both classes.............hmmmmmmmmmmmm ;-)
FMurry8995 03-05-2008, 01:08 AM Jim: Just one note on the Grand National class of cars. It is my understanding that the sportsman rules on the clutch DO NOT APPLY to this race. Thats to mean that if a person has a Grand National car they will only be changing the carb adaptor plate to the 8.5 plate.
On that note. Will they be provide at the race? I suppose that if thats the case, each person needing one should have to post a refundable deposit that will be returned when the plate is surrendered.
Fred Murry
FMurry8995 03-05-2008, 01:12 AM One other note on the sprint cars. It is my understanding that the wing side dams will be secured in a fashion that a racer will not have to remove his existing side dams. The idea is to possibly use a double sided tape to secure them. This is the thought at this time. it is not set in stone.
Fred Murry
jbell31 03-05-2008, 09:17 AM You are correct Fred on both counts, and the plates, if you do not have one, one will be provided.
jbell31 03-07-2008, 07:55 AM Updated form is available. You need only send $50 if you are running 1 or both classes to reserve your entry. The payout will be to both classes @ $190 each just for showing up and running. Win, loose, or draw. You can't beat that, and it is all for a good cause.

jim you might want to check this out. last yr. we pre entered for the 50 and recieved a check for 190 at the end of the races. so we actually only recieved 140 to race. does this mean this yr. if you enter two classes you get 140 for one class and 190 for the second class?????
jbell31 03-07-2008, 11:57 AM That is what the promoter said, and I verfied with Bryan... This is the 20th annual and they want to make it special, so if you plan on running both, get your form in ASAP...
jbell31 03-10-2008, 02:38 AM A far better, gooder, gooder webpage with more information on the ROGN.
Check it out, I will be updating it as more information becomes available. Also I will be bringing forms to Easley if anyone needs one.

fasteddie09 03-10-2008, 03:56 AM You need to update the concept page. Some of the commitee names has change.
jbell31 03-10-2008, 11:54 AM Thank you. I plan on doing that, but I thought this would be a good thing from days gone by.
There will be other updates also, I understand that the Scott (the new promoter) will have a website up to do the bidding on drivers. We are trying to work out the details, when ready I will post the website.
Hope to see you there.
DMP_SMOKE 04-16-2008, 07:02 PM so when will we know how many more drivers we will need my son wants to come and race too should i send the entry in and the money???:freak:

Dave:
I would say send it in. The more drivers to pick from the better.
Fred
Denny Andrews 04-17-2008, 03:43 PM I've heard of this race for years now... I imagine its a great time... Pops and I will have to make it one of these years, this year is out since it is the weekend after my wedding, I'm not to sure thats where the lady would like to have the honeymoon... :drunk:
What kind of turn out has this show had the past couple of years?
jbell31 04-17-2008, 06:00 PM So far, we have 12 confirmed, and I have another 5 or 6 from GLQSR that will probably make it. Some are running both classes. We would like to get between 30 and 40. I know there are several sprinters that haven't signed up yet too.
I am looking for more sponsorship to donate prizes and to the charity.
In the past, it was limited to 20 I think due to the amount of businesses donating to the cause.
DMP_SMOKE 05-25-2008, 04:48 PM can we get a roll call for this race???
jbrooks39 05-25-2008, 05:03 PM Yes, please; provide a status of application and acceptance of drivers for the event.
I have sent-in a check, and it has yet to be cashed. I would like to know if I can still plan to attend and participate in this race.
Thanks,
Joe

You should send a check with your entry.
bryansgarage 05-26-2008, 11:44 AM "Hello guys", I'd like to reply and give you any info you might need, but first I'll explain my absense here lately.
I have been involved with the Royal Oak Grand National since the early years as a promotor, race director, driver, helper and about any other job that needed doing.
The last few years I have been pretty much running our 1/4 scale end of things, and quite frankly ,I have burned out. Getting layed off again last December didn't help either.
The R.O race is a Great Lakes QuarterScale Racers event and I felt many more club members should be helping with this race, but sadly some chose to use the date as an off weekend. The bright side is all the racers who jump right in as "locals" and do anything that is asked of them, thank you guys.
O.k., This years race is the 20th and they have committed to making it one of the best ever. The biggest change is the addittion of the Sprint car class. This change is not meant to take anything away from the stock car class, originally they thought it would provide "filler" races during the day to keep butts in the seats ,when racing hit some down time. Not the case though, the idea has evolved into the Sprints running the sponsorships from the charitable organizations, and running for the Service club Challenge race. I see it as benificial to quarterscale racing ,when the puplic see's Sprint cars running at Royal Oak.
I asked for help on the driver recruitment end of things and Jim Bell ,Randy Brown, Randy Baker and Fred Murry jumped right to the task and to my surprise ,they got things off to a running start ,with about 8 Stock car and around 10 Sprints allready.
Joe, I recieve the entry's and hold onto them ,with the checks, so you are correct, they don't get cashed right away. I can turn them into the committeee, but feel safer knowing where they are and turning them in all at once, usually the week before the race.
Sorry, I can't accept PayPal entry's, but can work with anyone that has a problem sending in a form and paper check.
Wow, there I go writing a ton again! I am on this forum daily, checking on things, so any questions you need answers too, I will gladly help.
BTW, I am no longer a driver ,but joined the ranks of the car owners. My two son's John and Frank drive for me. Might as well put drivers in ,that can get better results that I could.
latemodel100 05-26-2008, 12:11 PM Entry In the mail.............
bryansgarage 05-26-2008, 12:20 PM Sorry, I need more "soapbox" time.
For all who don't know, this is called the Royal Oak Grand National,in name only! It started in 1988 and that's all we had then, no sportsman class, no Bush series, mostly just G.N., Sprints.
We tweeked the rules a couple years ago to allow the Sportsman cars to enter the race ,when G.N. started declining in ranks.
The main "rule" is we use Sportsman restrictor plates, this allows the Sportsman cars in as well as it changed the pace of the race and equalled the cars a bit more. We allow racers to use lighter clutch shoes, G.N. style air filters, but honestly ,the Sportsman clutch and filter performs just fine on such a short track.
We also went to a spec fuel acouple years ago. This leveled the field and is more in line with the Nationals fuel rules.
When you send in your check, this is more for us to get a accurate car count and set you up with a sponsor. On the Friday before race day ,you recieve a check from the Grand National committee for $190. We are still eating our own fuel bill ,so $10 from each goes toward fuel. I have tried to get the fuel covered ,but it is a racing expense that we see as vital to even competition.
This years addition of the Sprint car class means ,anyone can commit to running both classes. They are going to be sending in a $50 entry fee and when they get paid, they recieve the $190 check (remember they sent in $50)( 190-50=140) and as a Sprint driver a check for $190.
Single entry in either G.N. or Sprint gets a check for $190. I hope this answers some questions about the payouts.
Like I said before, any questions about rules, payouts, driving directions, hotels, race formats, pit space, gas prices, freeway construction , feel free to reply here, e-mail me plotkowski@wideopenwest.com or call any evening 586)-774-1340
I like ideas ,future thoughts, feedback,or concerns that might benifit us all.

Bryan-
Thanks for the responses.
My question, in self-interest, is whether or not you received my check. I think all of us understand (AND APPRECIATE) everything you are doing with regard to organizing and running the event. Thank you! I think those of us that have applied would just like to know that you did indeed receive our entry; or at least I would like to know for myself. :)
With regard to helping during the event, I would be glad to help announce the event. If you are using RC Scoring Pro, I would gladly help with running the computer a bit too.
Thanks,
JB
bryansgarage 05-26-2008, 01:11 PM Joe, good point. I guess I would like to know if I was in your shoes. I'll get the entry's out and post who is coming so far and in what class.
As for announcing, they have a regular announcer on a very big and very loud PA system. As race directors, Randy baker and I use a isolated PA system to the drivers stand.
On that note, Randy will be race director for the stock cars and I will be handling the Sprint cars.
The plan is to have the classes rotate between car and sprint ,to buy time for the drivers between rounds and to keep the action going on the track.
