View Full Version : 21.5/Lipo - Are you having FUN?
swtour 03-04-2008, 03:06 PM To those who are running a class using the 21.5/LIPO setup...
What are you running? Are you having FUN with it?
I know this class came out faster than a 4 cell Stock replacement class under most circumstances, *NOT Sure about with the COT bodies.
I've heard there are a few places running the combo -
So far, I've only run it on our Velodrome...and I like it there a lot.
I'm hoping to get a chance to run it on the short tracks this year too..both the flat asphalt track (Racers Haven) and the banked Concrete track (Metro R/C) both in Bakersfield CA.
We head to the Racers Haven track in less than 2 weeks...and I expect to have a decent turnout for it there...not huge by any means, but some good competition.

dangerousdave 03-04-2008, 03:14 PM I race at The Triclone in West Bend WI and we have 5-6 guys running the 21.5/ LiPo cars inside now. But I heard that it will be the biggest class we have when we head outside to the big track. And yes it is "FUN"!!!...
DD
TeamGoodwrench 03-04-2008, 03:15 PM I am having a ** BLAST ** with it !!!
I LOVE it.
The 3 tracks that I've ran it on so far have either run it as a separate class or have run the 21.5/LiPo cars along with the 13.5 4-cell cars.
Can't wait to get outside this summer on the "high banks" with the 21.5 LiPo setup.
nickbell1390 03-04-2008, 04:15 PM At Carolina RC we have been running for about 4 weeks now and the class has grown from 5 cars the first week to 15 last week. The class is great. The racing is great. Is a great class and a great speed.
swtour 03-04-2008, 05:15 PM ...are you guys all running conventional 'oval' bodies or are you running COTs?
TeamGoodwrench 03-04-2008, 05:25 PM We are running regular oval bodies -- not the Dump Truck of Tomorrow.
:-)
nickbell1390 03-04-2008, 08:09 PM we run a conventional oval body (charger myself), 3200 orion carbon lipo only, as well as novak 21.5 only, and bsr spec tires. The idea was to keep the cost down and the racing and close and if last week was any indication its going to be a great class. We were just 3 laps off the 17.5 lipo pace in the main.
TeamGoodwrench 03-04-2008, 08:32 PM What is everybody doing for weight rules with 21.5/LiPo ?
nickbell1390 03-04-2008, 08:35 PM we are at 2lbs 11oz
TeamGoodwrench 03-04-2008, 08:37 PM 43 ounces sounds heavy -- wow.. you must be adding a bunch of weight to the cars.
swtour 03-04-2008, 08:43 PM ...we're running ALL of our B/L - LIPO classes @ 38 oz min. (Both on FOAM and CAP tracks)
TeamGoodwrench 03-04-2008, 08:45 PM ...we're running ALL of our B/L - LIPO classes @ 38 oz min. (Both on FOAM and CAP tracks)
That sounds about right.
That weight is a lot easier on tires, motors, etc.
Flipper13 03-04-2008, 09:28 PM The 43oz at Carolina will be by roar rules. all cars will be ready for nats.
I agree totally with Team goodwrench, Jeff ran with us this weekend and his and one other guys 21.5 lipo smoked us. (we were running 13.5 and 4-cell)
I have ran it as well, it is much easier to drive, a lot less equipment and the car is the same everytime you put it on the track with the brushless & Lipo deal.
The racing has been very close and lots of fun and did I mention, LESS EQUIPMENT AND MUCH EASIER!!!!!!
Again, I hope that the racers don't screw it up.
swtour 03-04-2008, 09:45 PM OUCH - 43 OZ is heavy - *(I know I'll be working on lobbying ROAR to drop the weight in '09 w/ LIPO for Oval)
RCMits 03-04-2008, 09:46 PM i must say im having fun not having to work and bring extra equipment :)
I posted my first 51 lap run on sunday!
swtour 03-04-2008, 09:48 PM Good Job MITS!
B mullins 03-04-2008, 09:56 PM Here in Omaha it Rocks!! Consistant battery power and setup stays pretty much the same from week to week. PhilB is still alittle quicker with his 4 cell/13.5 car than our 21.5/lipo but we are slowly sneaking up on him, well at least one guy is...lol
tuftiger 03-05-2008, 08:57 AM I plan to run our back up CW solid this weekend on a 150' flat carpet oval. No class for it yet so will probably fall in with the 13.5/4cell. I bought the 21.5 and 3200 Orion earlier in the year and everybody at the track decided to go with the 17.5/4 cell.
We tried the combo earlier on an old HD and could not get it to handle. They don't check weight at our track so I will probably try to get it to 38 oz. I have no idea on roll out will probably try 3.5-3.8
bhbear29 03-05-2008, 09:00 AM Guys, don't get discouraged about the 43 oz. at Carolina RC Complex in Easley. They start the runs at 6.4's and go out the back door @ 6.5 or 6.6 with a good setup. And like Nick Bell said, the racing is great! With the lipo, you have a huge amount of time to really screw up the setup if you overthink it, or really help your car. Check out the rresults @ www.carolinarc.com and see for yourself.
You guys are running spec tires (at Carolin RC), what gear ratio/roll out are you running? Hope to get down there soon. Thanks
nickbell1390 03-05-2008, 12:05 PM Actually barry that was a 6.29 second lap on saturday. But seriously this racing in this clas at carolina is great. It looks like we are going to have about 20 racers in the class this week. It should be great. Like barry said they fact that you know what the battery and motor are going to do makes chassis set up all that much more important (trust me I know barry has been making my car better every week). As for gearing ask ten people get ten answers you have to find what the motor wants. I know guys that have been from 1.5 to 1.7 i'm sumwhere inbetween.
RCMits 03-05-2008, 12:28 PM where we are..asphalt track, 51 ~ 53 laps (experts seem to turn in more.. hehe) 21.5 lipo 3200 for our track its about a 3.85-ish roll out starting with an 88ish spur and going from there up or down. just as a base... hope that helps.
tuftiger 03-05-2008, 05:07 PM where we are..asphalt track, 51 ~ 53 laps (experts seem to turn in more.. hehe) 21.5 lipo 3200 for our track its about a 3.85-ish roll out starting with an 88ish spur and going from there up or down. just as a base... hope that helps.
Thanks for the input, the 13.5 are hitting 4.1-4.2 lap times so I believe the 3.85 will be a good starting point
SHAKY DAVE 03-05-2008, 05:18 PM NOPE!Sucessful setup i've been running the last 3 years(at 3 diffrent tracks, very little change)doesent work, changes to the car arent working,hand/eye coordination no good(cause i'm gettin old, lol),onset of glaucoma & i really dident want to go this fast anymore.Havent ruined a body the last 3 years. Two racedays,2 screwed bodys(alltho the 65 mph winds might have helped the second day).I'm not whining, but this deal is gettin real old, real fast. After racin oval for close to 25 years, seriously thinking about quiting.Gonna try a few more racedays, but we'll see where this ends up.Also, turnout at my hometrack has fallen off drasticly & the new faces i'm seein on the drivers stand are a little too serious for me.So am i having fun?NOPE!

slider 45 03-06-2008, 01:04 AM DAVE U ARE THE IRONMAN OF RC RACING THANKS FOR ALL THE TRACK PREP U ROCK. DAVE ANY DAY AT THE RACES IS BETTER THEN WORK EVEN IN HI WINDS IM STILL :roll:RED
afmustang311 03-06-2008, 11:42 AM The 21.5/LiPo is great. Hey Nick what gears are you running you seemed to be pulling me in the turns at carolina rc last week?
RCMits 03-06-2008, 05:54 PM Thanks for the input, the 13.5 are hitting 4.1-4.2 lap times so I believe the 3.85 will be a good starting point
13.5 might be diff.. but check your motor temps etc... :) good luck. im still learning myself.
nickbell1390 03-06-2008, 06:39 PM as far as i know i am the lowest geared of everyone else....and the way these motors are from one to another I could tell you but id have to kill and it wouldnt work. No i'm just kidding....92/57. Brian is two teeth higher than that so your just going to have to trial and error it. The other side of the coin is my car seems to roll the corner real real good and thats part of the reason I can carry so much speed. Dont ask me what I'm doing I'm not sure I know but the car is real free. Catch up with me saturday we'll look at tire temps.
Nick
SHAKY DAVE 03-07-2008, 02:16 PM Thanks for the encouraging words,Sean. You & the rest if my friends are the reason i've been there this year.Hope to see you at the new Bakersfield track(if they ever finish it)winnin another championship.
gezer2u 03-07-2008, 11:03 PM Hey Dave, what track are you talking about in Bakersfield?
RCMits 03-08-2008, 12:33 AM you go dave!! you can do it! :)
swtour 03-08-2008, 12:54 AM Don,
I think he's referring to the 1/2 mile asphalt track out near Taft Hiway...the Kern County Speedway.
gezer2u 03-08-2008, 10:53 PM Thanks Joe. I haven't checked their website for a while. Looks like things are moving along.
RCMits 03-09-2008, 01:36 AM gezer gezer bo bezer.. oops.. thread misdirect sorry...
nickbell1390 03-09-2008, 09:34 AM We didnt race yesterday because of high winds but four of the 21.5 guys stayed to practice and we all practiced together and i will tell you this class is just great. With four pretty good drivers, and four good cars we ran in a pack nose to tail, 3 wide, 4 wide, 2 wide, all the way around the track, rubbing bouncing off each other, it looked like we were at daytona you could use the draft to pull up on someone and singshot past them, get up real close and take the air off them and get them loose. I really like the racin in this class.
gezer2u 03-09-2008, 10:20 PM mits mits bo bits.........Hahaha!
SHAKY DAVE 03-10-2008, 10:21 AM Hey Dave, what track are you talking about in Bakersfield?
I think Joe is right.Dont know the name of it,but Sean Woodside is supposed to be testing a car there(if they ever get it finished)
swtour 03-16-2008, 12:47 AM ...well, I had fun with the 21.5 class at Haven today - not by running it, but because my son survived the CRASHFEST and got the early lead and was able to hold on to win his FIRST race of the year against a pretty stout field.
Paul Cathey and Bryan Blaser by far had the class cars - but Blaser got killed early on and Cathey had bad luck of his own getting him 2 laps down. Bryan held strong (Bryan Myers) and hung on the the lead nearly the whole race...as Cathey was running him down, and got his laps back. At the 5 minute mark as the 2 cars were coming to the line for the final time... Cathey and Myers got together, as Paul closed really fast...and the two cars spun. Cathey in TRUE GENTLEMAN fashion made sure Bryan got away first...giving him the win to Cathey's 2nd place finish...
Great run Bryan - and THANK YOU Paul!~
stoneman 03-18-2008, 08:07 PM We had an A & B main last week with 13 cars in the class and not everyone showed up to race I am thinking 16 to 17 entry's in 21.5 this week.
OUCH - 43 OZ is heavy - *(I know I'll be working on lobbying ROAR to drop the weight in '09 w/ LIPO for Oval)
I agree...43 ounces is crazy for lipos.
I do not like adding more then one ounce of lead to any vehicle when it is not necessary.
38 ounces sound about right to me.
RCThunder 03-31-2008, 04:59 PM A strong A and B main at Daytona this weekend... pretty close racing!!
Same lap times as 13.5/4cell.

CraigMBA 04-08-2008, 03:05 AM Back on the topic of 21.5.............
I took two laps real easy when I went out to practice (like 10% throttle) to do a radio check and finally nailed in in lap three at Hot Rod's this past weekend.
My goodness these cars have rip. I don't think my car was this fast with a four cells and a seven wind.

CraigMBA 04-09-2008, 02:18 AM Huh.
10.5 4 cell and 17.5 lipo are comparable. No doubt 17.5 four cell was slower!
2Groovy4U 04-09-2008, 11:14 AM 21.5/lipo and 4-cell/13.5 was very close this past weekend 54 laps for both. 4.2 fast laps for both.

Hudson Hornet ! 04-09-2008, 11:47 AM What would a good rollout be for a 21.5 / lipo on a 70 ft. runline paperclip track?
