I just joined a class where we run 6-cell spec packs that are broken down to fit pan car chassis. Can anyone tell me the best amp rate to charge, discharge, and so on. What is the best way to care for the packs? Thanks

Others may disagree, but I would say charge them at 6 amps and discharge them at 20 amps. If runtime is not really a big deal, I would dead short them as well. If runtime is a problem, then I would charge at 4 or 5 amps, and discharge them at 20 amps, and then dont dead short them.

Thanks, run time is pretty close, but I will try dead shorting to see what happens. How often should I dead short them?

i've always charged mine at 6 amps and discharged at 20.... i think dead shorting only works if you're running spec brushes or something that doesn't pull many amps.

True. I wouldn't dead short them if your are dumping when you are racing. We ran 4 cell packs, and I wouldn't dead short them just because I only had like 10 to 30 sec runtime left after a race. If you want to try dead shorting just make sure they are down to 0 volts, and then drop the wire to each pole. It will hurt your runtime, but bump your voltage up, and the internals down.

If you dead short that is how you store them until the next race.

Charge At 4 Amps Till Pack Almost Peaks And Let It Finish At 8 To 10 Amps

Believe it or not we are running the el-cheapo tamiya sport tuned motor ( black can)! With spec packs and this motor we are turning 83-84 laps in four minutes-That would be T.Q. in our 4-cell pro pan class but we are spending way less and having a lot more fun.

KOOL - ICEMAN is right on -But i'd charge at 6 amps till pack almost peaks and finish at 10 amps and then peak at 10 amps. And another way that works real good is to flex charge- just charge at 6 amps and peck at 10 amps works real good. I dont know if this is realy taking care of them but they will run alot faster this way. GOOD LUCK RACING P.S. the old spec packs are a lot better than the new ones if you could find some.

I still have a few 4cell packs - yellow cells. But after some runs they already lose some runtime and punch. It also seems like buying actual packs is like rolling dices: you never really know what you'll get.

For some time I thought about starting a homemade spec class but there is always something blocking the process. It could become a 6 cell sport pack class with use of throttle limit of -let's say- 30%.

Anyway I wouldn't be surprised if Trinity would change their cell supplier after some time. I feel it's a real pain to stick with these packs when some new product already is more popular and reliable.

Well they are importing IB's and EP's now, so maybe they will look at them to get a better more consistant spec pack. I think that would be great. There is a place in this hobby for a class that uses $15 batteries.

I ran the spec class at my local track for the past few years and found that the last batch of packs were junk. Last years packs were still better than the new ones. So, at our track we switched to the Windtunnel spec pack. 3000 cells, side by side pack in black shrink wrap with a deans connector, $25. These packs are great. With a 17.5 brushless motor, it is our biggest class running stock brushed speed.

We run a hobby stock class at our track. Gearbox car with open wheeled body, Duratrax 540 handout motor, Trinity spec pack. I've been putting my pack on a Novak tray down to .70, charging with turboflex enabled @ 5 amps, discharging @ 20 amps. I use the same pack all day never discharging after the first charge, just repeak (long lockout, turboflex on). Pack has been running very well so far.
