View Full Version : 10.5 gearing
munchi 02-21-2008, 01:07 AM what is a good ballpark rollout for a 10.5 brushless on a 365ft runline track? also using a 4 cell 4600 pack. the track is the grove speedway.. it can be viewed at hobbystop.com. it is very banked and has the same layout as the charlotte motor speedway.
REVALATION 02-21-2008, 09:08 AM 385 is the rollout for brushless motors
munchi 02-21-2008, 06:39 PM tried a rollout close to that and i am still slow. if i go up on the pinion.. motor get's warm but it is faster.
killerkoncepts 02-21-2008, 06:44 PM just make sure the motor temp stays between 150-165..that is a safe temp
munchi 02-21-2008, 07:28 PM i made a dozen or so laps and checked the motor.. it was between 101-104... not sure how it would be in a 4min. race.
REVALATION 02-24-2008, 12:36 PM in 4 minutes i am at 130 w/ a 88 spur and 49 pinion and im flyin my rollout is 379 but som guys start at a 350 roll out
James35 02-29-2008, 06:47 PM Revalation, he's asking about the 10.5 brushless motor. You are running a 17.5.
For brushless motors, generally speaking, the higher the turns, the higher the rollout, and also the lower the temperature. For example, a 10.5 will come off hotter than a 17.5.
In my opinion, the fastest way to get close to the proper rollout is to gear for temperature first, then fine tune it later. After a 4 minute run, here are the ballpark temps you should see:
17.5 115-130 degrees
13.5 135-145 degrees
10.5 150-160 degrees
EMK68 03-18-2008, 05:24 PM Anybody got an idea for gearing with a Custom Works GBX with a gearbox 10.5 6 cell lipo car? Track is around 145 ft middle radius turns ozite carpet.
Thanks
ovalguy1 03-20-2008, 04:11 PM just temp it after a 4 min run. Should not be over 170.

frank p. 04-06-2008, 02:24 AM Ritchie is that the temp of the motor or speedo? it seems no matter how high i gear my 10.5 i cant get the speedo over 100, but im getting the motor close to 120, but now it seems over geared and im not pulling as fast of times as when the motor was 110 or so, hang even more gear on it?? im close to a 3.0 rollout on a snowbirds sized track.
thanks
katf1sh 04-06-2008, 11:37 AM motor temp! wow!
frank p. 04-08-2008, 06:09 PM ok!wow!
Indiana 12-10-2008, 03:42 PM What would you guys suggest for 170ft runline,2.25 tires,flat ozite,10.5 of course.Almost forgot,4cell.
"Frank Ulbrik" 12-10-2008, 03:55 PM gear it till its fast and dont worry about motor temp!

2.85ish will be close.
Indiana 12-10-2008, 04:05 PM Thank you!2.85ish will be close.
Indiana 12-17-2008, 09:25 PM At about 285 motor temp was only about 135,more gear?2.85ish will be close.

Indiana 12-17-2008, 10:19 PM Let me know Tommy,I'll ask anything you want.Seems like I can never get the temps most of these guys are talking about.Tommy
tats31 12-17-2008, 10:25 PM I know i went up 4 teeth in the main never went over 130.
"Frank Ulbrik" 12-26-2008, 12:03 PM may have a really weak rotor if the temps arent where they are supposed to be! if the car is working really good the temps should only be around 150 with a novak motor.

If you're running a Novak motor, at full timing, with a Novak ESC, Frank's recommended ROLLOUT of 2.85(that's a ratio of about 2.45) should be a good starting point. If you're running a Trinity motor, that gear is close for 10deg timing setting. If you're running an LRP ESC, you can also turn your punch control up as high as 8 to get more punch, but along with it, more motor temp.
Also, you should be able to run the corner without lifting on a track that size, if you're having to lift a fair amount(letting all the way off) in the corner, might be some of the reason you can't get the motor temp up.
racin17 12-26-2008, 06:26 PM i am in need of 17.5 gearing info for gearbox oval. currently i am running a 100-38 using a cobalt on a 50-55 foot run line track. how much of a gear change is needed/ good place to start? i have heard alot about temp but have seen a cold motor (brushed) be way overgeared. any info would ge great thanks.
