I was thinking of painting some aurora wheels. What can I use to strip the chrome off without melting the wheels?

W43, Drop your wheels in a jar of household bleach for about 30 minutes or until you see the chrome dissapear, just depends on how stubborn the chrome is. Should work for you... I started a thread on 240 Z cars, "Catching Z's", I done the same with the AFX chrome blue 240's... RM
IF the chrome or bottom coat is in good shape, nuther words still stuck well on the piece to be painted, I clean real well with a tooth brush and some dishwashing detergent. Dry with a hair dryer if I am in a hurry or air dry. I shoot some primer lightly and then paint if I am going with a light color, or I put a couple coats of paint on the wheel if I am going with a dark color and skip the primer. Safer than counting on whatever the stripping agent is to not react with the new paint in my opinion. If painting a body with stripes, decals or other "edges", stripping is the fastest way to go in most cases and it saves the small body details. I will slink off into the lurkdom now

If your still looking for a product to strip hubs, then try Greased Lightning Orange Blast... (it's in an orange bottle). Autoparts store, any Walmart automotive section, or similar retail seller has it. Works great. I also soak my chassis in it. It removes oxidation from all the copper parts, hanger plates, shoes, degreases, degrunges underneath the hanger plates, pretty much the whole deal. I drop the entire chassis in a small bowl overnight. The gearplate, armature, axles, everything except the magnets and brushes. It's cheaper than an ultrasonic machine and likely just as effective. Keep aluminum hubs out of it though (causes some surface discoloration). I found out it eats plastic chrome the hard way... uh-oh naked hubs :o lol!! nd

Really? Doesn't it come off after you handle the wheel a few times? Never really tried it that way, always gave them a bath to get the coats off before I repainted. May give it a try.
Thanks Mic! rr

I have had Wesleys Bleach White for auto tires work great on all my chrome from models to Slots. Just plop the part in and watch the chrome vanish. I have stripped chrome in as fast as 20 min. Never hurt the plastic either. Give it a try.
Bleach as Hilltop said will work just as good as the wesleys also.

I have cars where I painted the chrome wheels years ago and they stilllook good. I schatch the chrome with like 600 grit sand paper the best I could. Then I spray prime them. Press them onto the axles. Then I brush paint them.
Can't say I handle the wheels much though.
