View Full Version : Minichamps Alfa Romeo 164 3.0 V6 Super
An excellent model by Minichamps of the Alfa 164

The Alfa was one of the "Type 4" cars, which were a cooperation between Saab & Fiat / Lancia / Alfa Romeo.
To misquote Meatloaf, three out of four ain't bad - I'm missing the Saab 9000 to go along with the Alfa, Fiat Croma (grey) & Lancia Thema (green).

Superbird77 02-18-2008, 12:05 PM Looks great, although I would prefer one in red. :)
EuroRash 05-25-2010, 08:20 PM I would like to find a black 164 LS model
to match the one I own
EuroRash 05-25-2010, 08:21 PM Here's a pic
oops, have to have at least 2 threads to post a photo...

Lummox 05-25-2010, 08:26 PM What's the Alfa with the upward pointing rear qtrs?
I thought that was the 164.
Superbird77 05-26-2010, 04:18 AM EuroRash: Beautiful Alfa, looks great in black:
Lummox: 75 maybe?

Yeah, that's the one, thanks!
I heard one of these models are still used by a race car driving school. They have a whole fleet of'em. I think they said they used 164s.
karl s 05-27-2010, 09:08 PM Is that 75 1:43? Here are mine:

Lummox 06-02-2010, 12:53 PM I never saw the real 1:1 before.
That's 'cause the 164 was never imported into the US.
The 75 was though, but not in any great numbers - typical for Alfa for the most part.
Superbird77 06-02-2010, 03:12 PM This one from Spark is certainly interesting:
164 Pro-Car, 600 HP V10  Apparently only one was made.

The 164 was imported to the USA from 1990-1995... not a lot, but they are here! See:

Awesome collection, and welcome!!!

It's funny, when I did build scale models, none of them were cars.
They were aircraft, mostly WWII. B-17 Flying Fortress, P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, F4F Wildcat, Focke-Wulf FW190, Messerschmitt BF190. Maybe a few others.
Shame I never took photos of them. My friend's 5 years old got of hold of them and reenacted dog fights over Europe. :freak:
That's when I was into motorcycles and before I really got into cars.
Was a Kawasaki fan. 78 KZ1000, 85 GPz 550, 88 Ninja 600, 85 900, and 86 1000r
54belair 06-08-2010, 01:51 PM The Alfa 164 and the Saab 9000 shared the same 105" WB platform along with the Lancia Thema and Fiat Chroma which were never imported to the US. The shared technology was a developmental money saver for the four companies. As the Alfa was the last version to be produced, its body lines became more aerodynamic with Pininfarina's assistance. Saab was gaining market share at this time while Alfa was fighting to stay alive in the American market, thus few 164's were on the road compared to its 9000 "cousin".
EuroRash 06-08-2010, 01:54 PM Here's an old Top Gear vid on them

Have some vids of my 94 LS
(94-95 US models had the 3.0 24v 210hp power plant)

I thought that looked like the Lancia!
Never heard of the Choma though, thanks for the info Dr. B ;)
All four of the Type Four cars are available in 1:43 :

Back - Saab 9000 & Fiat Croma
Front - Lancia Thema & Alfa Romeo 164
The most Looney Tunes version was the Lancia Thema 8.32 which had a transverse mounted Ferrari V8 driving the front wheels. Surprisingly, torque steer wasn't too bad!
Lummox 06-09-2010, 11:50 AM Though I find this thread somewhat interesting, I gots ta say out of 4 automakers using the same platform, ALL are quite uninspired looking! (just my own silly opinion)
Here's a REAL SAAB! :) I grew up with these 2 stroke pop-corn poppers.

karl s 06-09-2010, 04:55 PM The SAAB 96 was also made in 1/43 (could not resist):

Lummox 06-09-2010, 07:31 PM Wow, way cool Karl!!!
But the biege one pre-dates the 96 model. It's a model 93 from around 1958.
You can tell by the small back window, rear hinged doors, and the tiny horizontal tailights.
I'd love to find those! Only one I have is the met. red dinky.
Thanks for the pix!
karl s 06-10-2010, 05:55 AM Good eye! Saab 93 in front:

Neo have also recently released a resin 96 - albeit the later V4 version.

Lummox 06-10-2010, 12:57 PM Wow, interesting model Jinx!
I forget how it goes exactly. The last year the 96 was in the US was '73...I know that.
'75 for Canada I think.
I'm pretty sure the last year the 96 was produced was 1980.
The model above is from around '78 to '80.
Thank you for the pic - Love it! (allthough those big bumpers sure are ugly! :))
