Do you have a d drive? Typically Dell makes a "backup" partition, I can't imagine why it would be so big but thats a start.

When you say "running real slow" are you talking about when it boots up? when you go online? when you open various programs then try to open another program and it just takes forever?

Do you have a spy-bot checker? or a anti-virus program? Just a couple more ?'s for your ?. :-)

Have you run the Dell Diagnostics? Press the power button, then press F12 and look for the diagnostics choice in the menu that comes up.

How often do you clear your temporary files? temporary internet files? How many programs have you installed since you bought the machine? Is it possible for you to send a list of the contents on the hard drive. Send it to my email to keep the contents private.

Just curious, are you wanting to increase the speed for a particular application? do you play graphic intense computer games?

temporary internet files? Haven't yet
How many programs have you installed since you bought the machine? Decent amount
Is it possible for you to send a list of the contents on the hard drive. Send it to my email to keep the contents private. Not sure how

Just curious, are you wanting to increase the speed for a particular application? Nope just overall speed and start up speed
do you play graphic intense computer games? Nope none at all

Thanks for the help

My laptop (Acer Aspire 5315) came with Windows Vista Home Basic and 1gb of ram and it seemed slower than my desktop so I had alot of the junk "free software" crap that come from the factory cleaned off the system and that helped a little, then I decided to up the ram to 2gb (around $100 installed) and this really helped the speed.

Basically Vista is a memory hog and from my research prior to my upgrade Vista needs at least 1gb if not 2gb of memory to get some performance out of it.

Later,

Mark

27GB = System files and operating system.

2GB? Is it even supported? Find out if its DDR or DDR2 first.

Best advice for any WIndows system running slowly is to add more physical memory. Vista runs poorly on 512mb - you need at least 1gb but most recommend 2gb.
XP will run okay on 512mb

A lot of systems can come preinstalled with a hidden system restore partition on them which will take up some of your available hard drive space. If you are running Windows, the swap file which is also hidden by default will also take up hard drive space. This can be anywhere from 512mb to 1gb. Also when you format a hard drive it never ends up being the exact size of the drive due to how manufacturers and Windows see a drive.

It's not hidden. It will show in My Computer. However, if you don't have one, either you deleted yours by accident or they gave you a CD/DVD instead.
