i have a 130202 brigs engine 5 hp horizontal all apart ready for rebuild i notice some scratches on my crank since i have new rod and piston can i remove these scratches from the crank with out removeing to much requiring a new under size crank or will something like fine steel wool or vert fine 1000 grit emery paper work ,this is my very first rebuild so im concearned with the scratches hurting the new rod they arnt really deep can not feel with finger nail ,but can see them with my reading glasses , engine has a lot of work to do this summer ? one more thing can i lap my valves useing the old ones or should it be done with the new ones again dont want to hurt new parts but need to remove some small pits and carbon this is my very first piston-- ring and valve job otherwise all other parts are as new in condition inside cam tappets ,springs etc gears are very good thanks for your help tim from Oxford NY

You can polish the crank journal with fine emery cloth should not cause a problem. If you are going to replace the valves then you should use the new ones when you lap them in. This is so they will make a good seal in the valve seat and you should always use the valves that are going back in when you lap them. Be sure to set the valve lash before you lap the valves and then check the clearances after to make sure they are still within the specs of your engine.
