View Full Version : Thinkin about a truggy?
NatalieMorgan 01-31-2008, 09:18 AM Well ive been a pancar racer for a while now and I know that I wanna run dirt this summer. Been reading alot about the truggys out there. I wanna get my feet wet but dont really wanna dive right into a 700$ losi 8, I know that everyone recomends this as the truck to have, but what about some of the other trucks out there? I have been looking at a Tamiya Nitrage, Robitronics Mantis, CEN Matrix and a Hot bodies LSP. Has anyone had any luck with these? which ones should I stay away from? thanks
natalie
8HerT 01-31-2008, 09:45 AM natalie thats great that you want to race a truggy but you may want to start small get a 1/10 gas truck to learn the right way to drive out side too many people try to start at the truggy and buggy i only say this because i my self have been racing fo 25 years and seen it all it dont take long to learn to run nitro but do it the right way and cant wait to see you on the track with you new losi 8 T kicking butt.
Stick with Losi8T, Mugen5t, ot Kyosho strr...IMO. If you are not into the cost of a new one I would definatly consider a slightly used one. Many racers unload there kits after each season or for the flavor of the month. These deals offer good opportunities for newer racers to a class to try out a few different rides. If you want to be competitive these are the best options. Also Consider visiting you local track and see what others are running. LHS should have an inventory of parts for whatever you choose.
Toiffel 01-31-2008, 10:20 AM Natalie, I can get u a better price for a losi 8t brand new in the box, and for a lot less than the price you posted. I run one, and they are great!!!
Send me a pm for a price!
Heatseeker 01-31-2008, 10:52 AM Natalie check carolinasRC.com. They have a 10% off sale that ends tonight on orders over $200. You can get a Losi8 for around $600 shipped. The Mugen MBX5T 1/8 Prospec Truggy Kit would be a lot less than that.

groundhogg 01-31-2008, 09:59 PM If you've been racing for awhile, you know the value of buying the good stuff right off the bat. You get what you pay for.
I agree with the posts above, stick with the top 3 that papa mentioned if you can swing it. The ones you mentioned are not very common among racers, so parts will be hard to come by if you break something (if you race, you'll eventually break something...).
If your just bashing, you can wait for a part if needs be. Go ahead & get whatever if that's the case.
Another possibility to consider?
Monster truck....... You could snag a REVO for less than $600 RTR. It is the rig of choice if racing MT class. Some even race the stock engine, too! It would get you started, with the ability to upgrade as desired.
NickRummy 02-05-2008, 04:01 PM Nat, you're more than welcome to take my LSP for some laps around Medina some time. I know it's not the big time name/super competitive truck a lot of guys are suggesting but it will at least give you a decent idea of the size/performance? I always wanted a truggy and since I wasn't dedicated to racing it I couldn't pass up the deal I got on it.
Just an offer!
Bmaroney 04-08-2008, 01:14 AM Losi is the only way to go! As for the whole spending $700, you can get a Losi8T RTR or the kit. Either way you look at it you will be spending quite a bit of money to get started unless you buy something used with all the necessary items that you will also need such as a starter box, glow ignitor, fuel, possibly a motor, servos, etc... Whether you go with a Losi, Mugen, or Kyosho its going to be expensive. So it pretty much comes down to personal preference and I prefer the Losi8T. No matter what you get just remember to have fun with it!! Hope to see you out at the tracks!
Hackman 04-08-2008, 02:33 AM Nat as for the truggies you mentioned the CEN would be the best.. Not a top choice for most racers but the only competitive one out of what you mentioned. My friend Chris Systma runs for CEN and wins A Mains all over the east coast. Last year he was the Northeast Pro Series Champ in both Buggy and Truggy driving CEN.. I Myself prefer a Mugen MBX5T... fast , lite , easy to drive , easy to work on , and very durable. Good luck!
Hackman 04-08-2008, 02:45 AM Nat here is a chance to maybe win that truggy you want.
My local track is having raffles to help make some facility improvements. everyone please take a look they are some really great kits!

Uncle E 04-08-2008, 07:19 PM Hey Bad Ass, what battery pack do you use in that truggy? I'm looking into a truggy or a buggy and am wondering what volts, cells, amps etc. Am I correct that more people race buggy then truggy in MI IN OH etc

Its hard to keep up with what people are running, and the rules change a bit from track to track. I just got back into RC after 10+ yrs away from the hobby. My favorite vehicle is my T4, running a Novak GTB and 13.5 motor. I just sold my Revo, the nitro thing got to be to much. But ya, is that a conversion kit Badassrevo? I love my Rustler VXL too though, not much on the track, but with a good 3S lipo it is literal a land rocket.
I bought the T4 thinking that the one tenth truck class would be safe from extinction, I hope so.

I run a Poly Quest 4s 6000 lipo in the truggy. I have a buggy too that I run a Poly Quest 4s 5000 lipo. It is a www.rcproductdesigns.com kit
don2004 04-20-2008, 10:13 PM Will this revo be competitive? Is this a good set up?It has a o.s. 18 tm stock pipe a sepetrum sr 3000 receiver, single sterring servo ds1015, personal transponder, extended a arms, traxxas ti- rod bars, rear brake, foc., relocated battery pack, tekno wing, panther tires, proline body, motor saver air filter. What else will i need to race at Medina or Sheffield tracks? What is a good spring and shock set up? I have a traxxas resignator pipe should I put that on this truck or leave it stock? Any info is very helpful.
badassrevo 04-21-2008, 06:17 AM Drill out the stinger on the stock pipe with a 1/4 drill bit. and run the long travel springs on the the shocks with stock oil and p2 rockers.
The rest is in the tires. run Boa clay with yellow ofna foams and you will be good.
