I have always been told that the Hakko 936 is great for RC work, so I got one from a guy on Swap/Sell forum. However, the tip just doesnt generate enough heat for soldering motor leads and battery packs. Can anyone suggest the Hakko part number for a good tip for this use?

a. what kind of tip do you have on it now
b. is the tip damaged or not getting hot?
c. id use a smaller 1/8" tip for general use, and a wider chisel for battery packs
d. did you pre-tin the tip?
e. are you cranked all the way up on power and still not getting hot?

you'd want the 3.2 for general and 5.2 mm flat chisel style tip for batteries...
this is my opinion...

936 Is the best iron I have ever used! I use the chisel tip as well.

Thanks guys.
The tip barely gets hot enough to melt solder even when turned all the way up. It is tinned, and is a chisel type about 1/8 inch. It looks to have quite a bit of use, but not eaten up. Bad element maybe?
My cheapie Weller 40 watt has way more poop when it comes to heating up a solder tab on a motor in just a few seconds or attaching a battery bar to the end of a cell. The iron itself is a 908 if that helps.

hmm..... only way to see if a. try new tip b. try new iron or c, lightly sand the tip to see if its just a really bad tip... or... heck i dunno ;-)

I think I'll order one of each of those sizes you mentioned. That will probably do it - especially the bigger one for batteries. Thanks again.

try one tip
before you open both.. just in case your iron is bad.
that way you can resell or return the other tip.

You might want to check the tip with a temp probe to see if the iron has be calibrated. They don't come calibrated when you buy them. I'm not sure about the other models but the 936 has a little rubber plug on the front with a screw behind it. turn the screw in ward to turn up the temp on the iron. Mine was off 30 to 40 deg. when I got it.
