Yeah, I saw that yesterday afternoon, too. Very sad.

He was also Sgt. Hacker in "Gomer Pyle" and Barney Hefner in "All in the Family". That's 2 celebs, I wonder who # 3 will be.

He was seemingly in every fifth episode of The Andy Griffith Show, each time as a different character but always as a ne'er-do-well. The man had a great career.

Here's a link to a 1970 Liquid Plummer commercial that Allen Melvin was in.

Seemingly but not quite. He was only in about 6 or 7 episodes total.

Sad to see him go.

6, 7, 8...who cares? The man excelled at smart alec "comedic villainy", of whom there are far too few these days.
R.I.P., Mr. Melvin, and thanks for the entertaining work; you are missed!

I'm a big fan too. I've worked with Mr. Griffith on a couple of occasions, as has my wife, Sabrina. We've got a picture on the wall of Andy with his arm around Sabrina which was taken at his house in Manteo, NC about 15 years ago. My 8 year-old daughter, who has become a big fan of The Andy Griffith Show, thinks that pic is the coolest thing in the world.

Very cool indeed! My wife has pretty much eschewed modern television and enjoys Andy Griffith reruns!

Now that's pretty cool Scott! I've never met Andy, but Goober: George Lindsey lives close by, near Nashville. I made him a custom 8 mego figure of Goober. He was thrilled and we have several pics of him posing with my family.:dude: A really down to earth guy.

TVLand. Check their schedule - it's playing 6 times tonight!

We even run the early seasons of The Andy Griffith Show on the PBS affiliate I work for. Those shows never get old to me, I've seen some episodes more times than I can count. I will say though, that it's only those seasons with Barney that qualify as true classics for me. Once Don Knotts left the series and it switched to color, it seemed to fall into much more of a standard sit-com format. It sort of lost it's magic.*

*I think I'll wait a couple of more years before I let my daughter watch A Face in the Crowd. If she watched it now, she might want to take that picture down off the wall.:p

Andy has been on a long time here too. Our local fox station has run the show at the 10pm time slot, 1hour of AGS, for about 20 years now. Still going strong.
