View Full Version : I heard the basic storyline for the latest Trek Movie...No Spoilers
X15-A2 01-15-2008, 08:11 PM I heard the basic storyline for the latest "Trek" movie from a friend who works in the FX business. I won't repeat it here (heck, it might even be wrong, who knows?) but suffice to say, if this is what JJ & Company are going with, there will be a howl of "oh brother'!" from the fans. I could not believe my pointy little paste-on ears when I heard it!
My friend saw some specific set pieces being built which clearly telegraphed part of the story and had some of the rest loosely filled-in by people in the FX shop he was visiting.
All I can say is; I HOPE HE IS WRONG!!
We will all find out soon enough but the fans might be well advised to brace themselves for a let-down! (again...)
Of course, however old-hat the story may be, JJ & Company might still make it very entertaining. So there is always that consolation and the casting seems pretty inspired as well.
Zombie_61 01-15-2008, 08:27 PM If it's the old "a Romulan plans to alter history at the time when the Enterprise crew was forming, an elder Spock finds this out and decides to go back in time to warn his younger self" storyline, it's already been debunked as rubbish.

Very true. Try describing the basic plot of "Buffy" to someone - it sounds idiotic. :p

We will probably get some help with this issue on Friday when Cloverfield opens. There is supposed to be a teaser trailer for the new Trek flick. Hopefully enough to debunk some ideas and give us all hope for the end of the year.

Same thing with Battlestar Galactica. Even if you can get the listener to comprehend the plot of an episode, it almost doesn't spoil anything 'cuz it's all about seeing it in the unfolding. Heck, some of the early TNS Galactica's plot lines were pretty close to those in TOS, but it's the sub-text, emotion, even the play of light in TNS that make it more compelling.
I wouldn't give up just yet.

And for those who don't get to see "Cloverfield" this weekend, the trailer will be officially online on the 21st.
Dave Hussey 01-16-2008, 03:50 PM If you go to Trektoday.com, you will find a short article that links to a text description of the trailer.
IMHO, the trailer at least is well done - piques interest by showing just enough to get you excited - but only that. I once had a girlfriend like that!

PerfesserCoffee 01-17-2008, 09:42 AM All I can say is that it's a flashback to a critical incident, sort of a "first contact" for many of the 1701 crew but in different situations prior to their serving on board the Enterprise together.
This incident is related heavily to much of what happens in a few different episodes during the series and explains some interpersonal relationships that we never got to know the background of (the "familiarity" was already there by the TOS series).
Of course, the storyline is heavy on adventure but there'll be no "time travel" element except in the loosest sense of its being a flashback.
I don't think we'll be disappointed.

Is that a fact.

That's a fact, Jack.

What is a fact is that we won't know for certain what the storyline is until the film is finished and in theaters; until then it's just rumor, speculation, and/or hearsay.
jheilman 01-18-2008, 01:03 AM Well, I'm taking from Carson's comment that it is a fact that this element of the story is correct.

PerfesserCoffee 01-18-2008, 10:18 AM As far as I'm concerned, nobody knows nothin' yet!
Right now, I wouldn't believe the truth if it came out of the scriptwriter's mouth.

I believe this settles the rumor. Now on with the usual griping and complainants from people who don't know squat.
Carson Dyle 01-18-2008, 04:12 PM Let's see over how many threads we can extend this same discussion.
Yeah, cuz God knows a screenwriter would never lie in order to guard the secret plot details of the 2nd most eagerly anticipated film of the year.
