Hi I'm beginning the design phase for an indoor oval track for a customer. The track is to be 120' long and 50' wide with 5' - 6' high banks and 16' wide. I do not have any experience in rc racing or the track building but I do own and operate a cabinet shop so the carpentry won't be a problem. I'll have around 40' - 50' dedicated to a platform for the racers to stand and have a place for their things, along with bleechers for spectators.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas or photos of similar tracks or first hand knowlegde.

*Just a side note, tonight I finished for this same customer an 82' long slot car 1/4 mile drag strip made from corian and laminate. I'll post some pics when I take them

Thanks!

my question is "Where are you building this track?"

WOW - 5-6 ft high banking would/will be HUGE and FAST (Kinda scarey) Most of the time I'd be happy having 5-6" of banking.

Leesburg, Fl is the track location and he's dedicating an entire store (around 150' x 60' with a back storage area) to the track and stands. Also the infield (90' x 16') will be a dirt track for 4x4 stuff.

Wow the pictures are going to be a great resource for me. Thanks jman. May I ask when you built the track and an estimated of construction. Because that's my next dilemma is pricing.....

Thanks again

You may want to have the owner/customer rethink having a Dirt track in the infield of the oval. This will make for some heafty maintentance keeping the oval clean and free of dirt/dust. I've tried it, We had a indoor dirt track and a asphalt road course/oval in the same building with no dividing walls. Let me tell you the dirt was a PAIN to keep off the Asphalt track. Jsut make s for ALOT more work.

I was only a racer there. The banked track was replaced with a flat track a few yearas ago.If you post on the Thunder Road message board alot of the originials stayed involed with the track. They can give you a better idea of cost

I believe Steve Walker (beachbum2007) built the old banked track at ThunderRoad. It was built around 10 years ago. Here is a link to his HobbyTalk name http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/member.php?u=12203 . He might be able to give you an idea of the cost.

With that amount of banking you really need to watch the transition going into the corners. You can also check out Turn 4 (formaly K&N). They have one of the best banked tracks in the US. http://turn4rc.samsbiz.com/

Also if you do a search on myspace for rcspeedwayraceclub you will find a banked track up in Benton ME. It is also a nice place.
Hope that helps, and good luck.

What are the local guys saying about a track with that much banking?

I get the feeling steep banks aren't all that important. I'm building a scale model of the track in the next few days so I'll post some pics and specs and get everyones opinon. Can't say thanks enough for the help so far.

Here's the strip I'm finishing
