View Full Version : first scores in 2008
SMS88 01-12-2008, 03:33 PM Has anybody else added any more Lesneys to their collection so far this year?
The no 7 Refuse truck is as mint as anything I own,the box is perfect and seemingly factory fresh(old stock genuine, not a reprint!), and came from ebay for a fair price this week and is my first SF of this casting which I have owned as a rw for nearly 40 years. All the others came from 3 local collectors, the Mandarin Vette mint in a very rare box type, and the 16 dozer bringing my G Box score to 33/75 and my 1970 model year to 74/75 castings. The Marzal is a shade varition which sits halfway between my existing pink and orange cars, the GT Lotus & Rover fill gaps very nicely for the pennies they cost, all in all a great start to 2008 :)

matchboxtom 01-15-2008, 06:42 PM I made the best regular wheel score in the past couple of years at a local toy show last weekend. The cars look like they just came out of the boxes with the bare metal parts as new looking as I have ever seen.

Over here in europe we would be very grateful for the rare chance to buy such a fine display at such a fair price  Great scores Matchboxtom, such a good start to 2008 hopefully indicates the character of the year ahead ;) I have not yet seen an orange 19 Lotus in the metal, the green gpw Pickfords is very nice and doesnt come up as often as the bpw, also on my wants list.......
karl-e 01-16-2008, 03:56 PM Nice scores guys  SMS - I really like the Mandarin Corvette and the box is a piece of graphic art (just can't figure out why the picture don't match the model  )
The rotating display that Tom show us is a beauty, I don't think that they were ever used here in Denmark. I would like to get my hands on a piece like that ;)
My best score so far this year, is on it's way from Texas
My first giftset, looks like it is in very nice condition (replacement cellophane though) Can't wait to get this one in my cabinet :woohoo:

Great box art on this one Karl  I wish Lesney had followed their own artist and put a yellow tipper on the 26 GMC - a vast improvement on silver, although perhaps drawing the GMC in Grit Spreader colours was intended to represent 2 of the castings in the package.........
I remember those rotating toy displays in the UK as a child
As to the Mandarin box, the Buick was the first casting released and the company economised on printing and design by merely putting the appropriate red label on the end flap for each casting rather than designing a whole unique box per casting. The shabby quality of the wheel fixings is so poor that later issues sit on their baseplates rather than run on wheels -Mandarin was so ultra low budget that its no surprise that they didnt sell well at 50 cents v $1.30 for Lesney when I saw them in store in 1974...and little was saved for collectors today .....this previously unknown box design has first appeared online on MCCH this year - Karlīs old auction rival Vejledalen had 11 of them - this is the one & only that I bought from him :)
karl-e 01-17-2008, 03:56 PM SMS - if you ever manage to get another one of those mandarins with that boxtype, LMK ;)
And if you like artwork on the front of the giftset - check out the reverse of the box :woohoo:

DadsCoronet 01-18-2008, 06:03 PM I've recently started to replace some of my Lesneys from my childhood that are long gone. I'm not looking for mint and I'm certainly not looking for the boxes either. But I do want the replacements to be in decent shape - a few chips are OK.
So far I have replaced these:
Ford Zephyr
Scammel Snow Plough
Dodge Dumper Truck
Dodge Crane Truck (my original one has a broken post that holds the crane swivel on the truck)
Although I didn't have one as a kid, I also picked up the red Ford Galaxie Fire Chief car. Got it for a good price from the same seller I got the Zephyr and Crane Truck from and it's in nice shape.
The others I'm working on replacing are:
Vauxhall Victor Estate car
Foden Cement mixer (orange w/ black wheels)
Commer Milk Float
Hatra Tractor Shovel (yellow)
Sports boat w/ trailer (almost forgot about that one!)
Drott Excavator
I should probably look for a replacement for my white Mercedes convertible since it's missing a door.
Roadster99 01-18-2008, 06:39 PM I love the Mandarin Corvette; I have that exact same model and box, along with some other Mandarins: Honda 1300, Toyota 2000GT, and Toyota Celica. It's a very hard car to come by. Love the Matchbox Rover as well.

Here are my 2nd scores in 2008 - the muscle Machines Willys and the 2 seater 13 Buggy came from a trade but the rest were from a flea market today.Lastnight I was blessed with a $100 parking ticket  but this morning I found these shown above, the Dinky truck, the Guisval Renault A110 & Jaguar XJC plus the Siku Citroen DS on ebay will get back my expenses for these 4 plus $100 I think so what comes around goes around....
Meanwhile I can keep the Lesneys for my collection - the gpw Fire Chief came from the same estate sale table as both 39 Pontiacs bpw & spw at $3 each, the gpw 22 Cresta with windows is a nice one and for only $8 -the spw yellow 31b (not 31a!!!) has some rubs to high edges but is otherwise very tidy with a maroon baseplate $16 (many antique dealers at this market selling today) the Foden at $2 has lost a lot of paint but it does have larger fine tread wheels rather than the usual smaller knobby wheels-its nice to find so many rare variations for well below ebay prices -i have been blessed again :)
