I am running 17.5 brushless at my local r/c raceway. What temp. is to hot for these motors. Last week mine came off a 4 minute race at 124 degrees. Any info would be great. Thanks.

We were testing a 21.5 with a 3200 lipo last week and had no idea on the gear and it went into thermal overload around 170 Paul Weapon 1 01-11-2008, 12:19 PM I am running 17.5 brushless at my local r/c raceway. My 17.5 get's about 130F after a 5min Run. These Motor's Don't like heat so much as a Stock motor's. Keep them running under 130f and they will last longer. pmsimkins 01-11-2008, 02:45 PM I don't know the ideal temperature, but from what i found with my very limited 17.5 experience was that when the motor was 130 to 135 the gearing seemed about the best lap time wise. With mine I found it difficult to get much warmer then that. Getting it hotter won't hurt the motor though. You can go to about 200ish before you're running a big risk of hurting anything. You'll just be slow. Same as with any of the other Novak BL motors. They are all constructed the same way. Rocket9D 01-11-2008, 10:34 PM Thanks for the help. i just try to keep mine so it gets no higher than 130. LARCGuy 01-12-2008, 12:07 AM Don't be afraid of getting it hotter. A lot of things will determine how hot the motor gets. Keep an eye on lap times, and if you're running fast it's ok to let it warm up a bit more. briano_72 01-12-2008, 12:38 AM I am also running the 17.5 (1/12) the 124 seems about right, I have run my as hot as 135. We were testing a 21.5 with a 3200 lipo last week and had no idea on the gear and it went into thermal overload around 170 Paul im not 100% sure, but the motor temp does not have anything to do with thermaling. its the speedo temp. thats why they got big heat sinks and fans. dadandsonrcnuts 01-21-2008, 09:12 PM where do you check the temp, pinion side, wirer side or the middle of the motor. abdule 01-22-2008, 12:32 AM middle of the motor is were we have been checking, right or left of the purple band seems to be cooler....................... :woohoo: LARCGuy 01-22-2008, 12:54 AM You can check all across the motor, but if you're going to use the band in the middle, read off the sticker or put one on it. Otherwise temp gun will give you an artificial high. bolognarc 01-22-2008, 08:23 AM I run 17.5 every week always have a fast car (driver may not always show it) & my best runs are in the 135-140 range. I have ran the motor hotter but lap times fall off in the last 45 seconds of the run when you exceed the above temps. brian0525 01-22-2008, 10:14 AM im not 100% sure, but the motor temp does not have anything to do with thermaling. its the speedo temp. thats why they got big heat sinks and fans. Thermaling can happen because of the motor temp and the speedo would never thermal with a 21.5 even with a Lipo in my opinion but maybe someone from Novak can varify. The Speedo can thermal but usually takes a mod motor to achieve that kind of heat in the speedo. I have run Lipo 13.5 and thermaled the motor several times and the speedo was hardly warm and I run a flat plate no heatsink and no fan. crewchief 01-22-2008, 10:22 PM I,ve heard several opinions about the timing ring some say that from factory its set where it tested the best others say turn it all the way up to the allen screw? Any input? oldtimer 01-22-2008, 11:04 PM I put down a track record run at turn4 with mine running at 137 vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
