View Full Version : Tire Tack And tracks
3wideroberts 01-06-2008, 03:12 AM This subject is probably a beaten horse, but what happens to a track as the more cars drive on in? Does the tire compound from all the other cars make the track stickier or greasier?... I find it gains grip, but the real question is how do you adjust the car before each round.... ( Tires, shims, maybe the Tire Traction, oils idk?) What is your opinions?

philb1 01-06-2008, 09:24 AM What and how much to adjust is subjective, the amount of racers and carpet itself will affect the bite that changes between rounds. Trial and error, previous experience to get the car right.
katf1sh 01-06-2008, 01:07 PM if your talking carpet? new tires every round is real real nice..
SDL98 01-06-2008, 03:00 PM I'd have to agree with Phil with the trial and error plus experience. I don't race much carpet and fought this alot last year at a couple big races
Tommygun43 01-06-2008, 04:35 PM 3wide,
I usually only notice a difference at the big races with alot of racers. At club races I usually only notice a change in the track over a period of a few weeks.
At the track you race at, Lake City Speedway, my car got loose after a few weeks. I shimmed the right front spring .010" more and changed from 2 blue side springs to a blue LR and opaque RR (10 pound/11 pound) this tightened up the car perfectly.
At CRC last week (big race kinda) my car got tight through the day, took the wing off and went from white RR to white/gray, car was alot better.
So, I would say the track doesn't always make the car do the same thing (tight/loose) and the changes you make just depends on what your car is doing.
The biggest change I recommend is to a RED chassis. hahahahah :woohoo: kidding!
McLin 01-06-2008, 04:40 PM I have to agree with katf1sh on this one. You don’t need “new” new tires but as you build up your inventory, cut as many sets as you can to the same size. Only run them once and put another set on. Take them all back home and give them a good soap and water bath, re-true them and your set for next week. This way the tire buildup is kept to a minimum.
jenzorace 01-06-2008, 08:31 PM Soap and water??? What about muddslide tire cleaner??
pmsimkins 01-06-2008, 08:42 PM I've tried the soap and water and wasn't a big fan. The tires ran strangely the next week and it was a lot of work.
In most cases I rotate two sets of tires throughout a race day and clean with motor cleaner after every run.
How the track changes throughout a race weekend is kind of unique to each track. Some things that effect it are whether the track sprays, whether the majority of people are running naturals or exotics, the weather, what traction compound is legal etc.
I usually just try to tune based on what the car is actually doing. When I try to guess what the track is going to do in the future and tune off that I usually shoot myself in the foot.
3wideroberts 01-07-2008, 12:30 AM I guess lack of experience will be key for me since, really i have only ran 4 years, and actualually knew what the heck i was doing for 2 years. I clean my tires with motor spray does that work well too? I find it does, but i dont quite the abillity to swap tires every round (Finincial restrictions) so i just keep adjusting ride height to the tires and re true the tires after every heat to get staggar back, unfortunately i dont get a chance to breath if you do this and try to make changes to help the car through out the night, and yes I am talking about carpet sorry for not specifying.
Thanks, Chris
RCThunder 01-07-2008, 12:16 PM I personally ran one set of tires all weekend at our last carpet race at Minnreg.. about 90 cars with tons of bite. I used the Muddslide cleaner after each round and loved it.....
erock1331 01-07-2008, 01:51 PM Each track will vary - Also varies with the type of tire traction they use.
For instance at Classic Hobbies (old banked track) when their ozite was newer, Paragon and warmer temps during the National events the track would get locked down. You had to go to harder tires to free the car back up.
They switched to Jack the Gripper years later, the carpet was worn and during the same months and temps the track would get slick with higher car counts. Not sure if this was a result of the worn carpet or the jack mixing with warmer temps or a combo of all 3.
