If you just use the discharge cycle on you charger, then Use a DPD, what's the safe procedure to dead short your 4 cell 4200 or 4600 batteries? And how long should you keep them this way?

And how long should you keep them this way? katf1sh 01-05-2008, 01:51 PM the pack needs to have 0 voltage in it before you dead short..a very safe way to dead short is with solder.the solder melts if too much voltage is left in the pack...kinda like a fuse. dpd to 0.00 volts per cell.novak tray set on dead short mode....integy 0-30 place in tray until pack cools than dead short. napolean 01-06-2008, 12:12 AM Thanks Kat, but then do you leave them shorted until you use them next? Thanks katf1sh 01-06-2008, 12:26 AM yup leave them dead shorted..fact do not undo them until you are ready to charge. must use a long lock out feature 99% of the time due to false peaks... once you dead short that pack always dead short it.....dead shorting does not work with every 4200 pack....some it works great on others don't respond so well to it. either way you will lose runtime with the newer cells....good luck Outlaw 44 01-06-2008, 08:12 PM Another thing. A cold deadshorted pack you charge for the 1st time during the day seems to charge better when I put in about 200 seconds in the pack and then re-dump the pack on the 0-30 before charging for good. The charge curve starts at a lower voltage and tends to climb steadier (less flat), so less fo a tendancy to false peak. JimmyMack12 01-07-2008, 08:52 AM What exactly does "dead-shorting" do? Does it kick an old(er) pack into life after discharging it down to 0v, or what? I have some Spec 1600/1700 cells that are about two years old (or at least, I bought 'em two years ago new in package). RPM 01-07-2008, 08:59 AM What exactly does "dead-shorting" do? Spec cells seem to charge better on a reflex charge. Cheers. crashmaster 03-09-2008, 11:29 PM who ever saying all this about dead shorting thanks alot REVALATION 03-10-2008, 12:20 PM well i discharge each cell down to .9 volts and then charge it b/c i find dead shorting my batterys make them suck come race time C43GO 03-10-2008, 12:42 PM I have used the techniques stated above and have noticed a gain in voltage, and we all know voltage = power. I use a novak tray to go down to .1 volt then a integy tray to bring down to zero then short them when at zero. wade 03-10-2008, 10:16 PM Probably because you are not doing it right. well i discharge each cell down to .9 volts and then charge it b/c i find dead shorting my batterys make them suck come race time ohiorcracer 03-11-2008, 10:41 PM Best thing I have found by dead shortning batteries is as follows. do this on a sunday night make sure battery has no charge cycle battery at 7 amps with .01 and discharge at 35 remove from charger and note your numbers on battery from charger. instantly put them on a tray (i use a novak smart tray) set at 0.0 put on till lights go out completely remove and insert dead short wire across terminals repeat the process on thursday night and check out numbers and record them. remove wires from battery when you get to track and charge and go.. My numbers on my packs started out at 4.92 packs and now they are 4.98 and internals of 6.9 and 400 seconds. They run awesome... Hope this helps. TeamTdriver 03-11-2008, 10:58 PM You Shouldnt Be Dead Shorting 4600s At All I Hear It Kills The Pack But I Never Dead Short Mine And They Are Fine As Long As You Equalize Befor You Charge Rob Anytime72 03-12-2008, 09:38 AM My numbers on my packs started out at 4.92 packs and now they are 4.98 and internals of 6.9 and 400 seconds. I'm not saying your packs don't run great but naturally your 4.92 pack will become a 4.98 pack you lost anywhere from 35-50 seconds of runtime. Don't let your avg. voltage number of a deadshorted pack fool you into thinking it's a killer pack. And I have had some dead shorted stuff run killer but eventually they go down the tubes......fast RPM 03-12-2008, 07:02 PM I'm not saying your packs don't run great but naturally your 4.92 pack will become a 4.98 pack you lost anywhere from 35-50 seconds of runtime.
