View Full Version : Cleaning body shells
valongi 12-28-2007, 06:34 PM Folks,
I just picked up a mid-late 70's AFX #1948 Monza GT, one of the cars I had as a kid. When it arrived, I was happy that this particular car body was in really good shape. Lit chassis too! I need to replace the tires, along with a slight clean-up of the chassis and the body shell.
What's a safe chemical to clean the shell up, without taking off the green striping and numbers? I tried some rubbing alcohol, which did a decent job, but it did leave some green paint on the Q-tip. It didn't take enough paint off to be noticable, but I didn't want to press my luck.

micyou03 12-28-2007, 07:04 PM I just use dish washing liquid. Be careful with alcohol, it could soften the paint.
sethndaddy 12-28-2007, 10:50 PM pretty much what Mic said, warm water, some soap and a toothbrush will clean it good, then give it a coat of Future floor wax.

Yup!
Only thing I'd add would be some cleanser like Bon Ami or Spic and Span for the stubborn grease scum that accumulates on the underside (only!) in the nooks and crannies.
Dont wanna use abrasives or hot cleaners topside or near chrome goodies.
Some times I use a product called "Orange Fresh" or a 50/50 mix of water and Simple Green too.
I always err to the side of caution.
wheelszk 12-28-2007, 11:31 PM hey bill you there?
RacerDave 12-29-2007, 06:53 PM I agree with the above. I am leery about any chemicals on old bodies. I use warm soapy water. Dave.

This is probably one of the most safe and effective ways to try and get rid of that dirt and grime without hurting the original paint and color.  rr
LeeRoy98 12-30-2007, 12:25 AM I do warm water and baby bath wash with a Q-Tip or Walmart sponge brush and the Future floor wax coat when I am satisfied.

AfxToo 12-30-2007, 05:51 AM Be careful with alcohol
Especially when cars are involved.
BTW, I tried cleaning a JLXT F&F body with isopropyl alcohol and it took the paint off.
valongi 12-30-2007, 09:03 AM Thanks a ton, gentlemen. Even before I uncapped the rubbing alcohol, I knew there was probably a better way to do it, so I went light and easy in trying to clean it up. I'll ask my wife to pick up the floor wax on her supermarket run today, but hope she doesn't get the idea that I'm about to break out the mop too ;)
micyou03 12-30-2007, 10:47 AM Make sure its Future floor wax.

Better introduce her to customizing slot cars! That way she'll know your intent. You know darn well you don't want to be waxing any floors don't you? :) rr
mfinger1 01-03-2008, 02:07 PM I'm assuming that Future floor wax is water soluble so that in the event it gets scuffed, that it can be easily stripped and refinished?
vaBcHRog 01-03-2008, 04:27 PM Ammonia takes future right off however it will attack your chrome so be careful

micyou03 01-03-2008, 05:13 PM I have found that if it gets scuffed you can clean the car and re dip it (leave it emmersed for about 20 seconds on the first dip), let it dry for at least 2 hours and dip again and the scuffs should fill and look great again. If two dips doesn't quite do it, just dip it again.
