(Or anyone else)
Can a Superfast transitional be dated somewhat by the wheels?
I get the feeling that the solid wheels are earlier that the hollow ones -
is that true? Also do all the solid ones have tread? - Thanks!

Hi Lummox
We can date some wheels to 1969, others to 1970 or 1971 or 1972
The first mass production 1969 Superfast wheels were 5 spoke thin and solid with fine tread around the edge.Plenty of models exist with a mixture of both solid wheels and the earliest hollow thin wheels, which also have fine tread around the edge and some combination of 2 letters and or numbers moulded on the inside hollow. The later (by 1971) hollow thin wheels have no tread and no letters or numbers inside. The first thick hollow 5 spoke Superfast wheels were made for models like the 45 Ford Group 6 so coincide with the introduction of this casting (first run 68 Porsches had thin solid wheels).Larger size 4 spoke thin wheels were not made for very long ( probably only 1969-70?) - used on the 1 & 2 Mercedes truck and trailer, 7 Refuse truck,44 Refridgerator truck ,70 Grit Spreader and the Field car amongst others before they were replaced on future runs of these castings with thick 4 spokes. On the others like 19 Lotus ,30 Buggy (usually thick flower pattern) or the 4 Dodge stake truck (both thick 4 spokes and flower pattern) I can only guess that the 4 spokes probably were issued shortly before the flower design. The tiny wide 5 spoke wheels were obviously made for the launch of the 29 Mini and the next size up wide 5 spokes were first seen on new models like the 51 Citroen SM and early converts to wide wheels like 14 Iso, 33 Muira and 22 Marzal probably around Christmas 1971.Even fatter 5 spokes with a ridge in the centre line were new for models like the 32 Bora & 33 Datsun
