The VW which wasn't a VW.
In 1969, VW took control over NSU, which was experiencing financial difficulty following the release on the Wankel engined Ro80, which had been proving to be very unreliable.
At the time, NSU had been developing a new car to slot in under the Ro80, the conventionally piston engined K70. VW were consious that their own range was getting a bit out dated, being rear engined & rwd. On the other hand, the K70 was a modern front engined fwd car - so the badging was changed & the K70 was brought to market in 1970 as a VW.
