View Full Version : After the races!!
L4OvalRacer 12-13-2007, 01:12 AM Got a question for the Pros. What is the best thing to do to a pan car after the wekend races. What should i do and what shouldent i do.
Is there a special method of things to change or do beside just basic clean up.
PS. What is a safe ride height to run

Wow...the only one of those I do - is LOOK for BENT PARTS (But I usually wait until the following race...about 2 heats into the day) LOLOLOL
Outlaw 44 12-13-2007, 02:03 PM Also, take your preload off your springs, take them completely off if you need to, especially the front springs because they tend to lose their original strength over time. Springs that change will affect handling a ton.
Check changes in stagger on tires, make changes to the car according to the wear you noticed.
Open a bottle of beer.
I pretty much just true the tires for the right stagger, clean and lube the front end, redo the diff, check if the shocks are smooth, and obviuosly check for any damage.
It depends on how I'm running. If i am not running well, I will pretty much rebuild the car before each weekend.
I run the front as low as possible withou hitting the carpet and the rear .060- .080 higher.

Now the only thing I do is open a bottle of beer :woohoo:
burbs 12-13-2007, 03:36 PM If your car is good, before you take anything apart make sure you write down your whole setup so when you re assemble something you know exactly how it goes back.. Also if you have a fast run at the track, be sure to scale your car after the race. this way you know how to set it for the next run.. I know alot of people, myself included forget to do that sometimes.. I always do it pre race but sometimes i forget to do it post race.. then i have to guess my LR for the next race..
During the week, i
Take the tires off the car and bag or box them.. Air doesnt hurt them to bad,.. The ultra violet rays from light kill foam..
clean all bearings
rebuild the diff. sand rings, clean and relube balls, make sure outer bearing is mint if you use one. I use a thrust bearing on mine.
rebuild the front end, polish kingpins re lube ect. check springs for sag.
rebuild side and center shock. polish shafts.
take the t plate off and check to make sure the cups are free, but dont have slop in them.
Make sure you always pop the center shock off the toplate.. If you keep the shock on and the t plate is sprung, it will have a memory and wear it out faster.
do a basic rundown on all parts to make sure nothing needs to be replaced. check ballcups for slop. they wear out quick if you get hit alot.
TeamGoodwrench 12-13-2007, 03:42 PM I go and collect my blue and silver trophy !
Then after I get the car home I unhook all the shocks and back off the collars and set it up on the car stand.
David Butts 12-16-2007, 09:59 AM You guys work on your cars? There's my problem:tongue: . I just chunk my stuff in the garage after a long brutal day of racing(wall bangin)and some how, Miraculously when I load it back up for the next race, It's ship shape and ready to race.
Actually, This hobby should be called "R/C rebuilding and wrenching". Weeks worth of hard tedious work are followed by 12 minutes of track time to undo all that previous work. Then the cycle starts all over again.
I think we're all crazy and all the non-rc racers are the sane ones. :woohoo: Here comes the short bus
erock1331 12-16-2007, 12:54 PM I totally read this question wrong. I was gonna say make sure to grab a good dinner, then go have some drinks (if you are over 21) lol
And try not to get arrested.
L4OvalRacer 12-16-2007, 01:02 PM OK David Sounds Good ??????????????????
The Jet 12-16-2007, 01:50 PM I used to spend quite a bit of time during the week tearing down the car completly, rebuilding everything just to make sure it's perfect.
NOW, I treat things as if it's a hobby, I spend the weekends playing with the car.
I did my stint with race cars (Never finished, it just becomes time to go racing) and now enjoy my RC for hobby purposes, and my hobbys are weekend based.
So to answer your question, the best thing for ME to do is put my stuff away and wait for the weekend.
hopper 12-16-2007, 09:25 PM hang it on the wall until next week!
go home and get bitched out because youve been gone all day, and spent to much money, by your wife.
DIRTsportsman 12-17-2007, 10:48 PM It depends if i win or not
PUF19 12-18-2007, 05:00 AM If the car was real good, scale the car and write down the entire setup, every detail you would be surprized how it can change staying with the track change. I also temp the track surface, a setup that works at say 58* does not work at 75*. After teh setup is loged, undo the center shock take the tires off and put them in tubes.
clean all the berrings, only take the diff apart if needed, usally about every 3 weeks.
polish the front end, a smooth front end is worth more then you realize!!! change front springs often, they are cheep, and a good way to keep consistant. change the shcok oil, all 3. the black/brown stuff that you dump out is NOT the ticket ;0)!!
A day after racing is over, discharge your cells, equlize them, put charge back in them.
If running brushed motors, cut the coms, new brushes/springs brake in. Dip let dry, dyno. polish the body ;0)

SHADOW 12-18-2007, 10:36 AM Pack up your stuff, pay your tab in the hobbyshop, and load the truck. Hopefully hit Wendy's (its the only thing open at that time of night) for the 2 hour ride home while dodging deer and other asorted wild life running acrossed the roads:eek: .
Matt Nothstein 12-18-2007, 11:13 AM That road between Honesdale & Carbondale is pretty scary at night..hahah

UMMMMMMM that about sums it all up.

Dude ya forgot to add the part where you add up all the milkyways you were given during the day!
garacer08 12-22-2007, 12:22 AM I put every thing back in its place and strap any thing that could move around in the trailer and hit the road back home. The 125 mile drive takes care of any after race stuff. The next day I do my cleaning and rebuilding. Since I race Nitro I go through the diff, and side shocks after every race. I have seen that my HPI center shock will last a month easily.
swtour 12-22-2007, 12:49 AM go home and get bitched out because youve been gone all day, and spent to much money, by your wife.
I remember having a WIFE...
She use to call my PAGER w/o fault...just as we got on the drivers stand for the MAINS...with a "Emergency Page" ... It was always.... "What time do you think you'll be home?"
12 years later - I'm still racing, don't have a PAGER...and SHE lives 3 states away!~ LOL (Best we've ever gotten along!)
Outlaw 44 12-26-2007, 09:18 PM Note to self, always "forget" cell phone or pager at home before leaving for the track LOL.
Seriously though, I'm fortunate I can work out the racing stuff ahead of time with the wife.
A trick to racers who meet a new girlfriend. When I met my current wife, AS SOON AS THINGS GOT SERIOUS, I told her "honey I'll love you forever but you gotta accept I also love racing". Retired NASCAR champion Richard Petty did even better than that. He basically told his wife Linda before marrying, maybe not in these exact words: "racing will always be my top priority, take it or leave it". As far as I know they're still together to this day. No false expectations or empty promises, everything is clear right off the bat!. Also When going out with a new girlfriend DO NOT put off your racing. She'll learn to accept that racing is part of YOUR life and she'll deal with it or leave before getting too involved. Then if she gets mad at you later in life for going to the races you can always say "I was racing when you met me, right?"
Another trick, work out a racing calendar ahead of time. This will avoid frustrations later on, plus the wife can also plan outings with friends and or relatives ahead of time. Nothing like a little time away from time to time to keep the couple alive.
You can also cook up a really good supper for her the night before. Chicks dig that s%&*!
Sorry for taking this further off topic.
