View Full Version : Speed Racer Collecting
wwwmwww 12-12-2007, 05:24 PM Hello,
This is my second thread here. I was looking for some info on a Tomy Speed Racer diecast car here:
http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=200119
And I thought my Johnny Lightning collection was complete. Little did I know. In that thread it was pointed out to me there is a FAO exclusive set with Black interiors and apparently there is also an exclusive set with Orange interiors. Reading some other threads here:
http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=140405
http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=123508

Here is what I've been able to find...
FAO Speed racer set has orange sawblades,no other release has.
Clearly, the hardest item to obtain was the set with the black interiors. My understanding is that this set was either sold as a JL collectors club exclusive packaged in 4 individual boxes (like matchbox cars) or through FAO Schwarz with the special acrylic display case. The auction I lost to Pocketwocket was for the JL CC version (the only ebay auction I have ever seen for those). The auction I won last week was for the FAO version, only 1 of 2 such auctions I have seen in the past year.
Speed Racer - Collectors Edititon (Release 1 - Red cardbacks): No accessories for Mach 5 came in release 1. All four cars came in red and orange interiors. Also, uncarded versions of this set came with black interiors and were available from FAO Schwarz with an acrylic display case (see post #1 in this thread for photo) or from the JL Collector's Club in individual cardboard boxes (like classic matchbox cars). I know PocketWocket has the Collector's Club set so perhaps he can comment on the accessories, if any, that came with that set. The FAO set came with black sawblades.
Speed Racer - Collectors Edition (Release 2 - Gold cardbacks): The wheels on this release are different than release 1. In this release the Mach 5 came packaged with either the auto jacks or the sawblades - the card art was different and matched the accessory. These sets came in both red interiors and accessories as well as grey/silver interiors and accessories. The silver interiors came with red accessories and vice-versa. I have read that there was an exclusive FAO set of release 2 cars that was packaged with orange accessories. I have never seen one. Perhaps someone can post a pic of that to eradicate my warm fuzzy completeness feeling. Anyone?
http://www.wwwmwww.com/JL/FAO1.jpg
So it looks like I have some serious hunting to do. If anyone can help me with these questions I'd greatly appreciate it
(1) Did either the black or orange FAO exclusives in acrylic cases come with matching auto jacks? I see mention of saw blades but no auto jacks.
(2) What about the JL collectors club exclusive. Did it have saw blades or auto jacks?
(3) The only set I've seen pictures of is the black FAO exclusive set. Anyone have pictures of the orange set or the JL collectors club exclusive?
(4) Anyone that has any of these... even the black set, PLEASE post pictures.
(5) And if ANYONE can help me track down these sets I'll greatly appreciate it. I can help others with some of the Mach GoGoGo diecast that is only available in Japan if there is interest. I also have several JL Mach 4's that I'd be willing to part with.

Pocketwocket in response to KaCHING64's Speed Racer Jubilation over finding a FAO exclusive black set said the following:
outstanding
now you got that warm fuzzy complete feeling....
If anyone can help me get that warm fuzzy feeling I'll certainly be in your debt.
Thank you,
Carl
P.S. Being new to Diecast forums but not Diecast collecting is this the best forum to be asking these questions at? I see a forum dedicated to JL here:
http://jltalk.com/
And I registered yesterday but have yet to get permission to post.
70XR7 12-12-2007, 05:59 PM I'd love to get one of the Mach 4's or the GoGoGo diecast - any Mach 5's would be cool.
LMK if you have stuff to trade!
wwwmwww 12-13-2007, 11:44 AM LMK if you have stuff to trade!
I have some stuff to trade but what I'm hoping to trade for are the 3 exclusive sets I mention above. I'm also in the process of getting set up to sell stuff on eBay so if and when I put some Speed or GoGoGO diecast up I'll be sure to let you know.
Thanks,
Carl

Hi Carl,
Welcome to the board. We have a lot of little car experts here, and also a lot of really nice people who like to help out other collectors. There is a swap and seel board as well to post whatever you might be looking for, or have extras of that you might be willing to trade for what you want. You don't have to trade what you list for anything you don't want. Just list you specific wants. Most folks here will give you a square deal. And I would have to say, your chances of finding those sets are as good or better here than ebay...provided you have something that someone wants in trade, or if they are willing to sell an extra set. No ebay fees or chances of missing out to a higher bidder. I would find out specifically what 70XR7 has to offer in trade before dismissing him. He's a reliable guy who has collected and been on this board for a while.
Just my two cents. Take care
wwwmwww 12-13-2007, 04:05 PM I would find out specifically what 70XR7 has to offer in trade before dismissing him.
Oh I certainly agree. I hope I didn't come across as dismissing him. As I said I was getting stuff set up to sell some stuff on eBay. PayPal doesn't want to verify my account for some reason and I'm trying to get that sorted out. Also most of my stuff is in boxes and I'm just now digging it out again. I have a total of 6 Mach 4's and I'd be willing trade up to 5 of them. I need to keep one for myself. :) I also have some of the Japan Hot Wheel Mach 5's that I'd be willing to trade. I just don't have numbers on me at the moment. I'll try to get a list together of what I'm willing to trade and post it here. If you have something you think I might be interested in please feel free to email me. There may be stuff out there that I'm still not aware of. I'm mostly interesting in Speed Racer (Mach GoGoGo) Diecast but I certainly don't want to turn anyone off.
Thanks for the advice,
Carl
wwwmwww 12-13-2007, 04:11 PM Also I'm curious... does anyone here have Tomart's Price Guide to Johnny Lightning Vehicles (Mac Ragan, 2001, Tomart Publications). Is so can you check and let me know if there is ANY mention of these FAO and JL collectors club Speed Racer exclusive sets? I'll buy myself a copy if so, but I think the odds that they are mentioned is small so I wanted to check first.
Thanks,
Carl
POCKETWOCKET 12-13-2007, 04:35 PM ......
wwwmwww 12-13-2007, 07:21 PM i have a tattered and well used copy....there was no mention of them....there are a few "holes" in the publication that i discovered over the past few years....
Thanks POCKETWOCKET!!!
From the threads I linked to above it looks like you own the JL collectors club Speed Racer exclusive set. Is that true? Could you PLEASE post a picture of it? The only set I've seen any pictures of is the FAO exclusive set with Black interiors. So I'm looking for pictures of the FAO exclusive set with Orange interiors too. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
I see you live (or at least used to live) in the Houston area.

Just my two cents. Take care
Wow, I'm getting the warm fuzzies....
I didn't take it as a dismissal, no worries. I don't have the sets he's looking for, if you want non-Speed Racer stuff I'd love to trade. Trying to get some of that stuff myself!
Mike
wwwmwww 12-14-2007, 12:18 PM is this what you are looking for?
YES!!! That is what I'm after. Are those your cars? If so is that the FAO exclusive set or the JL collectors club set? I've seen a picture of the acrylic display case the FAO exclusive set came in and I'm very interested in seeing the original packaging of the JL collectors club set. I've now also been told the FAO exclusive set did NOT come with auto jacks. What about the JL collectors club set? Also, do you have any pictures or info on the FAO exclusive set with orange interiors? Based on KaCHING64's comment that I added to my first post it looks like the FAO exclusive set with orange interiors is part of the "Real Wheel" series. That would mean they have different wheels than the cars with orange interiors that came on the red cards. If so I would assume they have "Speed Racer" written on the wheels. Can anyone confirm?
Thanks for the great pictures. Oh and if those aren't your cars and you found those pics on line can you please point me to where you found them? And if they are yours... any chance they are available for sale or trade? I'm assuming no but the collector in me is forcing me to at least ask.
THANKS!!!
Carl
wwwmwww 12-14-2007, 12:32 PM Wow.. lol. I live in Sugar Land, Texas also..... near First Colony now...
funny thing....i was out there off of HWY 90-A this afternoon having bbq with one of my suppliers....uh oh, sing along time:
it's a small world after all
:p
I used to drive HWY 90-A everyday. I lived in New Territory and worked at TI there in Stafford. I had also bought a lot in Grand River (out by Richmond) which I had to sell when TI laid me off. I was able to live off what I made on that sale until I found another job. Oh I miss that area. There were lots and lots of places to go and look for hard-to-find diecast. Here in rural Mississippi... not so many. My parents live in Tennessee and my father is in poor health so at least I'm closer to them.
Carl
POCKETWOCKET 12-14-2007, 01:20 PM ......
wwwmwww 12-14-2007, 03:21 PM my black interior set came bubble wrapped and in a small cardboard box (the one that they are sitting on in this group photo) without the acrylic display case - the seller admitted that he was keeping the case and only auctioning the cars....
Thanks... so it sounds like you've got the FAO exclusive set. It looks like KaCHING64 was under the impression (looking at his past posts) that you had the JL Collector's Club set. I.E. here:
... or from the JL Collector's Club in individual cardboard boxes (like classic matchbox cars). I know PocketWocket has the Collector's Club set so perhaps he can comment on the accessories, if any, that came with that set. The FAO set came with black sawblades.
Maybe simply because your set didn't come with the acrylic display case. This make me question... are we even sure there was a JL Collector's Club exclusive set?
none of the exclusives came with auto jacks, just saw blades....i do not have any pics of the orange interior exclusive set since i never had a chance to get one in front of my camera ;) ....and no, but thanks for asking, the black interior set is not for sale or trade at this time....
Thanks again for all the info. If you don't have the orange interior exclusive set, have you seen it? Maybe saved a picture from eBay or anything like that?
Thanks,
Carl
POCKETWOCKET 12-14-2007, 04:26 PM ......
wwwmwww 12-14-2007, 05:13 PM when i do run across a set, i'll be able to post a nice pic or two
Or maybe I will... :)
So what is your opinion of the JL Collector's Club set with black interiors? Myth? Or is there any hard proof that there is such a thing? My gut is telling me that it's simply a matter of people selling the FAO set with out the case.
Happy hunting to the both of us,
Carl

Dragnet_Supporter 12-14-2007, 11:49 PM No doubt I'm just adding to the chaos of tracking down Speedracer stuff here, but did you know there is a couple of indy cars, two limited VW buses, and a SR set with racing wheels?
Long Arm of the LAW 12-15-2007, 11:52 AM I was checking thru my box with all my old collectors club stuff , I couldn't find it but there was a sale page that had the FAO speedracer set in there offered for $9.99 , this came with the little acrylic case . I don't recall there ever being a collectors club set and I had always thought there was just the 3 different sets of the original casts released , red card , gold card and the FAO .
My friend just sold his FAO set a few months back , but thats how he got them was thru the newsflash

Yes, Yes, and Yes. I've got all those as they came out. Check out the first link I posted in the first post of this thread. I've posted pictures of all those.

If you could find that sale page I'd be interested in purchasing it off you if your interested. Short of that, could you post as scan of it if you can find it?
Which FAO set did your friend sell, the black or the orange set? Does he still have any pictures of it? Would he be willing to put me in touch with the buyer? Maybe... he'd be willing to trade or sell.
Thanks for the info,

wwwmwww 12-19-2007, 07:41 PM I've come across some interesting Speed Racer Hot Wheels info so I started a thread with the same name over in the Hot Wheels forum. Here is a peek and this will tie it into the Johnny Lightning forum as well.

PWSchuh 12-19-2007, 08:16 PM I assume you have the Darda Mach 5? I think it's pretty common.
fracsdad 12-20-2007, 01:35 AM Hi Carl,
I too am new to this board and cannot emphasize enough how great everybody is here. I have been a Speed Racer fan since I was 5. It was my favorite thing as a kid and now that I am older, I look back on it like my first love. Anyways, I started collecting just a few months ago and hit paydirt after posting my first thread here. Here is a link to my thread. Scroll to the bottom and click on the jpeg images.
http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=200859&highlight=speed+racer
I apologize for having to send you that link to show you the pics, but, I don't know how to post my own. The Mach 5 to the far left is an extra and not part of the set. As far as I can tell the wheels are not "real wheels series" as what you would find with the gold card cars. They are definitely plastic not rubber and do not have speed racer written in white letters on the tires.
I will shoot a PM on your behalf to the fella that sold me this set to see if he might have another. Seems we are all in the same boat looking for the same stuff. I personally would kill for that black interior set and I think if I had to get rid of my Speed Racer stuff that orange set would be the last to go.
You know I still have never seen anyone post a picture of the JL collector's club set. It seems the set pocketwocket described had come with the clear acrylic case (indicating FAO exclusive set), not the individual matchbox's someone had previously described that the JL Collector's club came in.
You know, it really is a small world. I live in Houston and my folks live in Sugarland.
LMK if you are looking for other Speed Racer stuff, always happy to hear from a fellow fan.
Good Luck,
john
wwwmwww 12-20-2007, 11:09 AM I assume you have the Darda Mach 5? I think it's pretty common.
I'm aware of it but no I don't have one at the moment. It's plastic and I'm more interested in the diecast. Plus as you say its fairly common so I probably will pick it up at some point. Just right now all my attention is on these exclusive JL Collector's Club and FAO sets.
Thanks,
Carl
wwwmwww 12-20-2007, 11:36 AM Hi Carl,
Hello John,
I knew I had seen the ID fracsdad before. I just sent you an email through eBay. My ID over there is cnh1. It's so nice to meet you. By the way, in that email I also wanted to ask if you could post a better picture of the 5 cars pictured here.

I can't read the captions under the 2 yellow cars on the right.
I too am new to this board and cannot emphasize enough how great everybody is here.
Agreed. It's been a VERY positive experience so far. Looks like I should have been here years ago. Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I must say it does look like there are more JL fans here then Hot Wheel fans though. The thread I started in that forum sure doesn't seem to be getting the attention this one is.
I have been a Speed Racer fan since I was 5. It was my favorite thing as a kid and now that I am older, I look back on it like my first love. Anyways, I started collecting just a few months ago and hit paydirt after posting my first thread here.
I too have been a fan since I was a kid. I always wanted a Hot Wheels or Matchbox Mach 5 growing up and they just weren't available. Now as an adult I try to get my hands on all of them that I can. I've been collecting ever since the first JL cars came out in 1997.

WOW!! That is exactly the type of info I was after. THANK YOU!!! So I assume you bought jlightningbug's set. Is that correct? Did it come with the acrylic display case? I only see the base in the pictures.
And I see you've been busy on eBay as well. You already got a Mach 4 I notice. Good for you.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220178864878 (http://www.qksrv.net/click-1606754-5463217?loc=http%3A//cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D2201788648)
Which brings up another question... How does one get these blister card protectors? Are they a Johnny Lightning item? From the pictures I've seen they look to fit these JL Speed Racer releases to a 'T'.
I will shoot a PM on your behalf to the fella that sold me this set to see if he might have another.
I'd appreciate that VERY much. In fact if that were to pan out I'd owe you a Mach 4. (see my next post)
Seems we are all in the same boat looking for the same stuff. I personally would kill for that black interior set and I think if I had to get rid of my Speed Racer stuff that orange set would be the last to go.
Well considering you've only been looking a since November I'd say you are having GREAT luck so far. I only hope I can find me an FAO set or two as fast.
You know I still have never seen anyone post a picture of the JL collector's club set. It seems the set pocketwocket described had come with the clear acrylic case (indicating FAO exclusive set), not the individual matchbox's someone had previously described that the JL Collector's club came in.
I too am very interested in the JL collector's club set. At the moment I'd be happy with a picture or an ad that proved that it even existed. And I want to know if it came with black auto jacks. I'd be really surprised if the auto jacks and saw blades weren't part of the same mold. If so that means JL threw away the orange/black auto jacks that were made with the orange/black saw blades for the FAO sets. :(
You know, it really is a small world. I live in Houston and my folks live in Sugarland.
Cool. I never had any family in the area so I haven't been back since moving away but I sure do miss the area. My wife was just lamenting the other day about our first home there in New Teritory. If you or anyone else in the area is interested PM or email me and I'll give you our old address. If you could run by and take a picture of the place and email it to me I know my wife would appreciate seeing what it looked like today. I certainly don't want anyone to go too far out of their way, I just thought it would be a cool way to surprise the wife.
LMK if you are looking for other Speed Racer stuff, always happy to hear from a fellow fan.
Good Luck,
john
Same here... at the moment the 2 FAO sets are at the top of my want list and I'm hoping to find some confirmation that there is a JL collector's club set out there. Since you can't prove a negative, if there isn't a JL collector's club set I guess I could be looking for a very long time.
Thanks again and I'm eager to see how your speed racer project turns out. Any pictures of the work in progress?
Carl
wwwmwww 12-20-2007, 04:50 PM All,
The six Mach 4's I have sure have generated some interest and several have emailed me offers. My reply so far has been the same to all of them and I want to extend the offer to the rest of you here.
I'm wanting to use the five Mach 4's that I'm willing to trade (I'm keeping the 6th for myself) as leverage in helping me locate the two FAO sets (1 with black interiors and 1 with orange interiors). I want to offer a FREE Mach 4 to anyone that can locate one of these FAO sets that is for sale or trade for me. If I'm able to acquire the FAO set I'll give a Mach 4 to the person that pointed me to it. It will be free and I'll even cover the shipping.
I've currently got eBay set up to email me if something falls under one of the searchs I've set up so I *think* I have that covered but just in case something slips through those cracks certainly feel free to email me and check. If two people email me about the same offer, the one with the earlier time stamp will get the Mach 4.
Ideally I'd want the FAO set in as new condition with its acrylic display case but I'm not sure how realistic that expectation is. And if you are interested in one of my Mach 4's don't give up if you can't find either FAO set. If I end up giving two Mach 4's away in this fashion, I should still have 3 to offer for sale or trade after all is said and done unless they are needed in trade for the FAO sets themselves.
And to the first person that can provide hard proof of the JL collector's club Speed Racer set I'll happily give one of these.
http://www.wwwmwww.com/Speed/HW1.jpg
And if you located a JL collector's club Speed Racer set that is for sale and I'm able to acquire it I'll give you that PLUS a Mach 4.
Let the hunt begin,
Carl
fracsdad 12-22-2007, 09:15 AM Carl,
Sorry haven't got back to you about some of those things. Getting hectic around here with the holidays and all. I plan to post more detailed pics of the FAO set and that jada diecast for you. I will be visiting my family in Sugarland Christmas, so PM me your old address so I can post some photos along with the others after the holidays.
Regarding those protective packs for card and blister, yeah, they fit like a glove and would be a great way to display the cars. I actually plan at some point to display mine in a large case. When I get to that point, you can have the few protector packs I own. I still have a number of holes in my collection, so there really is no point in posting pics. Believe me, when this is complete, you will get all the pictures you will care to look at.
BTW, I actually went to the source and emailed JL regarding the existence of the collector's club set. If/when I hear something, will let you know asap.
Also, no word from Jlightningbug yet. Will keep you posted.
Have a great holiday!

As I'd like to be able to read the text on this as well.
BTW, I actually went to the source and emailed JL regarding the existence of the collector's club set. If/when I hear something, will let you know asap.
I've emailed them a time or two as well. For the most part I don't usually get a reply. I think the one time they did reply was back in 1997 when I was having trouble locating all the cars with orange interiors. I had told them which cars I had with orange interiors and was asking of the others had been released with orange interiors as well. The response I got was essentially that I had all the variations possible and that the others hadn't been released with orange interiors. Needless to say I soon came across the cars I was missing with the orange interiors and lost a bit of faith in JL's customer service. In short the fan community is probably a better source for information along these lines.
May everyone have a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2008,
Carl
viperdave 12-30-2007, 02:04 PM Has anyone told you about the "first shots" set of Speed Racer yet????? They had a raw(zamac) car and chrome version in each box 8 cars total. very nice. I love my chrome and raw mach 5 even more than my mach 4's.
viperdave 12-30-2007, 02:08 PM Ok, my bad, i see them now..... I do have a 2000 SR mach 5 with cel#1 In white lightning version if your interested.

Happy New Year!
Well, I just tried to upload pics to this forum, but the files are too large. Send me your email address and I will get them to you that way. If you can compress the files or post a link you can post them or whatever you would like to do with them.
I was not able to make a run by your old house as it was too dark Christmas day. I will get that for you next time I visit. I did hear back from Jlightningbug and unfortunately no luck. He said he got it when it first came out for $9.99! I asked that he keep us in mind if he were to come across another set.
No word from Johnny Lightning yet.
Don't suppose you've seen the trailer for the movie yet. Looks great. I happened to also catch the 3D movie poster at the theater. Wow, it's impressive! It's really 3D. I am trying to find a way to get one. Even spoke to the theater manager who said the theater gets only one and Warner Bros. wants them back post promotion.
Hope your holiday is going well. Off to work I go.

For $9.99 I'd have bought 10 or 20 sets myself. Arg... I'm sure I'll come across a set for me sooner or later. The hunt continues...
No word from Johnny Lightning yet.
Good luck with that but don't hold your breath.
Yes, I've seen the trailer. Parts of it look a bit too much like the next Spy Kids movie to me but over all I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't seen the 3D movie poster yet... perhaps I'll see it tonight as I'm taking the family to the movies. If you are looking for one that sounds like the kind of item that is sure to show up on eBay sooner or later so I'll try to keep my eyes open for you.
Happy New Year,
Carl
wwwmwww 12-31-2007, 06:02 PM Ok, my bad, i see them now..... I do have a 2000 SR mach 5 with cel#1 In white lightning version if your interested.
mekarkrazy@yahoo.com
I've got a WL 2000 mach 5 already. To be honest I never paid much attention to the cel nubers. I see you are a fan of the chrome Mach 5. Have you ever seen this one?

wwwmwww 01-01-2008, 03:39 PM I got the images from John. Here are two very nice pictures of his orange FAO set:

John, do you or Jlightningbug know how these sets appeared on the store shelves? Were they in boxes? Were the cars anchored to the base of the acrylic display case? If not were there separate boxes for each of the cars? If there were any boxes used are there any pictures of the box art floating around? If you don't know could you email Jlightningbug and point him to this thread? Thanks...
And here are the pictures of the other cars as seen on the back of John's Hot Wheels Snap N' Build kit:
I've taken these pictures down to avoid this thread from being taken down.
Enjoy and Happy New Year everyone,
Carl

Sure in the display on my wall  It's from the first shot series. The last one on ebay i saw went for something like 40.00 by it self.
Atencio 01-02-2008, 11:10 PM Hello John,
I'm looking forward to the pictures. Please don't forget a larger scan of this:

As I'd like to be able to read the text on this as well.
I saw those Jada's today. They are quite a bit bigger than JL's as expected coming from Jada. I am guessing they are based on the movie. I did not really care for the other cars in the set.

Are you SURE about that? The picture I posted wasn't the JL chrome Mach 5. Its a picture of a Tomy chrome Mach 5. Its also the Mach 5 from the 1997 re-make and not the original. Here is the normal version of the same car.

wwwmwww 01-03-2008, 12:49 PM The page I found the above picture at was this one:

I ran that page though the google translator and was interested in this:

Can anyone tell me anything out that MIT car on the left? It doesn't appear to be a Johnny Lightning as none of their Mach 5's had yellow headlights. Looks like I'm missing something else. :(
Carl
Atencio 01-03-2008, 05:37 PM I have that MIT car. Bought it at a Shell gas station a couple of years back for $2.00. It is a friction diecast. It is noticeably bigger than the two JL castings.
Guessing 1/55. Very nice casting.
wwwmwww 01-08-2008, 01:49 PM I've come across some interesting Speed Racer Hot Wheels info so I started a thread with the same name over in the Hot Wheels forum.

I just got a reply from Hank. He said:
Yes, I was contacted by Jada that some of the pictures posted were copyright violations in that permission was not given to release those pictures to the public.
So I've removed the pictures above as I feared this would be the next thread to disappear. I'm not sure I agree with this as John owns this item I think he should be able to post pictures of it if he wants to. The person that sold it to John on eBay also posted pictures but oh well... it's not a battle that is worth fighting.

The Jada Original Retro Speed Racer Cars look Awesome. Mach 5, Shooting Star, Prince Kabala, Snake Oilier. 1/55 Scale. I can't wait for them........

wwwmwww 03-20-2008, 02:46 PM Time for an update on my Johnny Lightning Speed Collecting...
BTW, I actually went to the source and emailed JL regarding the existence of the collector's club set. If/when I hear something, will let you know asap.
Well I think I can confirm there are collector club sets. I finally tracked down an orange set and here are some pictures of the packaging that it came in. I'll post them as links as some are rather large pictures.

Note the shipping label on the side of the brown box. It had another Item# sicker on top of it and the label appears to indicate this one set was shipped direct from Playing Mantis to the customer. It sure doesn't look like how I'd expect the item to look sitting on a shelf at FAO Schwarz.
So now my Johnny Lightning Speed Racer collection is ALMOST complete. I just need the black interior set. If anyone has one and wants to sell PLEASE let me know.
And looking again at this...
my black interior set came bubble wrapped and in a small cardboard box (the one that they are sitting on in this group photo) without the acrylic display case - the seller admitted that he was keeping the case and only auctioning the cars....
http://wwwmwww.com/Speed/BlackInterior.jpg
I see the white box in POCKETWOCKET's photo is the same white box my cars are in. I wonder if that means he too has a collector club set or if the FAO sets had similiar packaging. I'd really like to know what these sets looked like while sitting on the store shelves at FAO Schwarz. It's hard to envision them sitting in plain brown cardboard boxes but I suppose anything is possible. If anyone out there knows... please speak up.
Oh... and POCKETWOCKET... I've notived you've removed all your posts from this thread. I hope I haven't done or said something that has prompted you to do that. As the only owner of a black interior set that I know I had no intention of getting on your bad side. I hope you come back as I valued your input in this thread.
Thanks,
Carl
fracsdad 03-20-2008, 05:12 PM Hi all,
You know what I am thinking is the sets were sold by both Praying Mantis/Johnny Lightning directly and FAO Schwartz. It would make sense that the manufacturer would make the set available directly. Of course the only way to confirm this is if someone would post a pic of the original FAO set packaging or at least confirm it was sold as such.
Carl, did you ask the seller how he got the set you bought from him? Was it a special mail order or promotion? Any information from him might help clear the air.
Regards,
john
BLUUBUDDAH 03-20-2008, 08:51 PM Has anyone seen this website? looks like all the JL Speed Racer items are listed here.
