View Full Version : Adjusting Timing on Novak 13.5 Motors
phil614 12-11-2007, 12:26 PM Hello everyone! I finally made the plunge and joined the world of brushless! I purchased the Novak Speedo and 13.5 Sinstered Motor kit. My question is how to advance the timing on the motor. I loosened the three screws on the back of the motor and carefully tried to move it to advance the timing to no avail. I was careful and didn't want to damage anything before I even got to the track.... Any input on how to do this?......... Thanx!
pmsimkins 12-11-2007, 12:50 PM Assumming by turn "it" you meant the timing ring then you did everything correctly so far. That is the black or red ring (depends how old the motor) with the notches on the "endbell" end.
First off you should mark the location of the ring before you turn anything. Make sure you've loosened the screws all the way. Sometimes the motors come with the timing turned all the way up from the factory. In this case you will not be able to turn the ring anymore. I'd suggest trying to turn the ring the other direction and see if you get movement that way. You don't want to force it, but it does take a little elbow grease to move. It does not turn freely like the endbell of a brushed motor.
Lastly, it's not really necessary to mess with the timing in most cases. The biggest thing you'll do is alter the gearing that the motor likes. Also, it is possible to go too far and hurt performance. I generally leave my motors where they come from the factory.
phil614 12-11-2007, 01:02 PM Thank you for the advice. It is the newer chrome motor that Novak includes in their new kit. Where I race; when I purchased the kit that is the first thing eveyone at the track does is to incease the timing to the max setting.

If your track is Turn 4, guessing by the avatar, I race or have raced against most of the same people at Maximus with mine left in the stock setting. Generally I am just geared a little higher then some of them.

ovalrc 12-12-2007, 09:13 AM Phil, on mine I had to fully remove the three screws before the timing ring would move. This may be the same with yours. If you can't get it to work, I'll be at Turn 4 this Sunday. Bill B
phil614 12-12-2007, 12:03 PM Thanx Bill; I'll try to be there this Sunday or next........

katf1sh 12-12-2007, 07:35 PM it does very little to improve lap times though. you have to adjust gearing or it heats up fast. it helps if you need to find a tweener for roll out.
Jamie Hanson 12-12-2007, 07:41 PM I have come to the point of leaving it at the stock settings. After speaking with a few people at Novak, it sounds like the motors are set to come out of the factory with the proper timing. I have once or twice turned it up and it hurt the on track times. I turned it back down and it was fine.

Im with Jamie on that one... I have 5 motors.. 3 of them are unmolested,, the 3 that Ive not touched seem to run faster than the 3 where I cranked the timing up and changed gearing.. Im not the fastest guy out there so maybe someone has something figured out that I dont..But I know Ive been more successfull with the motors I left alone,.
left lane 12-12-2007, 09:01 PM ill have to try one in the stock position again,i have been cranking all of my motors up right out of the package,i have done some testing back in the summer with no timing and then advancing the timing and it did pick up a tenth, put it back and it did slow down!
kevjoh1 12-12-2007, 09:35 PM Im with Kenwood & Jamie on this one also. Played around with
timing a ton last season with my 13.5 with little results. Put back
to factory settings and just ran as fast. I will keep all mine at
FACTORY SETTINGS. Just my 2 cents.......

98Ron 12-13-2007, 09:56 AM At the paved oval nats the Novak guy gave a quick talk on their brushless motors, he spoke about timing and stated that if you change your timing he would expect that you would also need to change your gearing. So if you have your gearing optimised, then change your timimg performance on the track should suffer with gearing changes.
Kenwood 12-13-2007, 10:14 AM I was including gearing changes with my experimenting... Again It could be such a thing that the 2 motor i messed with were lacking and therefore I was not giving a good comparison... But my good 13.5 motor Ive never messed with it...and been pretty competitive everywhere I go with it..
