View Full Version : Time Dialation in Star Trek
Old_McDonald 12-06-2007, 05:19 PM I made a reference to time dialation in another thread on this forum and it got me to thinking. Is there anything canon in the Star Trek world that can explain why there's no time-dialation effects when a ship travels up to the speed of light using impulse drive? We always here "full impulse" on the shows indicating light speed. Time should slow down for the crew.
i think they just sort of conveniently ignore it .
good point though .

spe130 12-06-2007, 05:40 PM Is "full impulse" actually 1C, or is it something slower?
justinleighty 12-06-2007, 05:44 PM I know in TNG that the Okudas established that "full impulse" is actually only .25c in order to minimize time dilation. It wasn't an on-screen thing, but I think it was in the TNG tech manual.
terryr 12-06-2007, 05:49 PM Real time dilation would be nuts to deal with. Every ship that went close to the speed of light would be in a different time than everything else in the universe. Ten ships battling ten enemy would get 'lost in time' with each other. Good plot twist!
Griffworks 12-06-2007, 07:14 PM For the in-story answer, the warp field does away with the relativistic effects. It allows the ship to travel at FTL speeds in "real time", so to speak.
El Gato 12-06-2007, 07:51 PM Um, it's just a show...
Griffworks 12-06-2007, 08:41 PM Huh...? No it is not! It is the historical documents!
El Gato 12-06-2007, 08:55 PM heh... heh... heh...

John P 12-06-2007, 11:13 PM I got crabs when I was in Rangoon....
CaptFrank 12-07-2007, 12:05 AM I thought Full Impulse was .5c.
this could get interesting .

That's why they invented razors. :freak:
John P 12-07-2007, 08:31 AM Oh THAT was what the Galactica special was about?

Not exactly, but it's why Michele Forbes' character had the buck knife. Watch the deleted scenes, it's the one right before the hot-tub scene with Gina....

frankenstyrene 12-07-2007, 10:38 AM Man I love how you guys run with random absurdities, instead of politely ignoring them like gas passed during a funeral! :D
