View Full Version : What is a spoiler?
aurora fan 11-27-2007, 12:48 AM I thought "spoiler" meant telling details of a program before it aired / opened.
On the razor thread and others I've noticed, posters say they don't want to post spoilers. I understand. But if the movies / shows have aired, how can anything be spoiler-ed?
I don't want to spoiler-ize anything for anybody, but isn't it the responsibility of the reader not to read threads about movies / shows he hasn't seen?
Everybody should have seen razor by now so before I post on my favorite scenes and (sadly) my disapointments in the story, I was hoping for clarification. Thanks.
Zombie_61 11-27-2007, 02:52 AM "Spoilers" are basically the dissemination of specific information about a film or book to anyone who has an interest in seeing or reading it but hasn't, and doesn't want to know those details prior to viewing or reading. I've seen several debates about a "grace period" for such items, but opinions vary and there are no "hard and fast" rules. Technically, if someone reveals, say, the ending to 1960's Psycho to someone who has never seen it but wants to, it's a spoiler even though the film is now 47 years old. So a spoiler is a spoiler regardless of how long the subject material has been available for viewing or reading.
Some people don't care about spoilers, others (like me) do. It's generally considered common courtesy to inform people at the beginning of a thread such as this that it may contain spoilers, so that people who don't like spoilers can make their own decision whether or not to read that thread. Some people, however, will simply discuss a particular film or book openly in a thread without regard to people who haven't seen or read it yet, and it can ruin that film or book for people like me who prefer to see or read it for themselves.
I recorded Razor but I haven't had an opportunity to watch it yet, so I avoid spoiler threads like a plague.
Ohio_Southpaw 11-27-2007, 07:14 AM Same here, recorded but not viewed until tonight. I have a guy at work who I have warned not to mention Razor until I've seen it so he doesn't fill me in on every plot detail.
John P 11-27-2007, 08:40 AM Then you have dopes who intentionally read threads clearly marked with the title of the film or show, who have yet to see it, and get furious when a spoiler is mentioned. Whassup widdat?
TAY666 11-27-2007, 08:59 AM Also, some have not watched Razor yet as they are waiting for the DVD release to watch it uncut and uninterupted.
While others were away for the holiday weekend and couldn't see it yet.
Generally for any new show I try to avoid specific comments about plot points for about a week after airing.
Unless it is a thread specifically marked as spoilery.
Or it is on a forum where it is general knowledge that the thread will contain spoilers.
Example - one board I go to has a TV forum with a thread for each episode of certain TV shows. It is understood that each thread will contain specific information and comments about that episode as soon as it airs. If you don't want spoiled, don't read the thread.

 EXCACTAMUNDO!
I NEVER read threads on shows when I want to watch something without it being spoiled for me. I wait until AFTER I've seen the show before I read criticisms and the like.
John P 11-27-2007, 12:26 PM I hear the Razor DVD will have scenes not in the TV version.
Dave Hussey 11-27-2007, 12:50 PM I hear that here may be - gasp - Cylons in it!
Huzz

Not everyone is in a position to have seen Razor just yet. I'm one of them. We don't get current TV shows, live feeds, streaming media or access to "Torrent" and other download sites, so I have to wait for someone to send me a DVR or for the Razor DVD to come out - for which I'm waiting as patiently as I can. :)
That being said, to a point you're right. However, there are plenty of threads that start before a show airs wherein folk want to discuss what they think will be seen, etc... They immediately turn to a direct discussion of things seen in the episode. IMNSHO, that's acceptable and anyone - such as myself - needs to take that in to account once they deign to open said thread(s).
Now, a general "Battlestar Galactica" thread might be about things that up to a point - say, season 2 or 3 - that most everyone has seen or has had the opportunity to see. However, once a new season starts up or a new show - such as Razor - airs, it's nice of folks to include SPOILER TAGS in their response. Or better yet, start a whole new thread.
Regardless, tho, you'll never please everyone all of the time. So long as you (the general "you", not you specifically :) ) at least attempt to keep spoilers from w/in a general type of thread, nobody can really blame you.
Jim NCC1701A 11-27-2007, 06:33 PM Well, speaking for myself, I like spoilers - mainly because it takes so long for any shows to get down to NZ. Case in point, Season 3 on BSG went on sale on the 21st, but it hasn't aired on free-to-air tv down here yet. And when it does I imagine they'll cut the eps to fit - the final of Season 2, they cut several scenes - Tigh and Adama having a smoke on Galactica, Starbuck and Tigh on the planet... fortunately I'd already seen the uncut DVD.
Having seen the bootleg Razor I gotta spoil it for those that haven't by saying you'll love it :-)
But I'm still gonna buy the official DVD release for all those extra scenes (the flashbacks from scifi.com?).
Cheers!
JerseyPhoenix 11-29-2007, 05:47 PM This is probably a good place for someone to post a link to the definition of "Pulling an Empire"
can't find the full article but here is a good exerpt of someone using the Empire analogy:
an Empire spoiler. For those out there that don’t get my reference, imagine it’s 1979, the internet exists and you’re reading rumors about the new Star Wars sequel called The Empire Strikes Back. There’s some new guy called Lando, there’s a big battle on a snow planet, Luke meets up with another Jedi and Darth Vader says something to Luke near the end of the picture. Sure, those are all spoilers but if I came out and said what Vader told Luke? That’s an “Empire”. What’s in the box that Brad Pitt holds in the final ten minutes of Seven is an Empire. Kevin Spacey’s change of footwork at the end of The Usual Suspects is another Empire. Got it? Good

So I suppose this would qualify?

terryr 11-30-2007, 02:43 PM HEY! You didn't tell me there would be spoilers in a thread about spoilers! You spoiled this thread!
I thought a spoiler was that fin on the back of old camaros.
Griffworks 11-30-2007, 02:45 PM Wait, I thought that line from "The Empire Strikes Back" was "Luke, I am Spartacus!"
scotpens 11-30-2007, 05:19 PM Wait, I thought that line from "The Empire Strikes Back" was "Luke, I am Spartacus!" :confused:I thought it was "Soylent Green IS your father!"
Nah, that don't sound right. . .
El Gato 11-30-2007, 05:37 PM I thought it was "Luke, Rosebud is your father"
scotpens 11-30-2007, 09:45 PM I thought it was "Luke, Rosebud is your father"Dear ol' Dad was a little strange.
Roland 12-01-2007, 10:03 AM When I read a post about a movie, I try to not look too closely. When I read a post, I am looking for some real general statements without getting a full plot summary and analysis. But, I can't get angry at someone for posting too much information, because I am the guy who knows that I shouldn't be reading it.
If you read a full thread about a movie movie that you haven't seen yet, you are asking for spoilers. I try not to mention much in my posts, but, somehow I always get into discussions about the film and it gradually turns into a spoiler.
Some people wait until a movie comes out on DVD and some people live in foreign countries where the movie won't air for quite some time. Anytime you post the details or conclusion of a movie, you could be spoiling it for someone. It really doesn't matter if you wait 1 week, 1 year, or even 1 decade. There will always be someone who hasn't seen the movie, yet.
