Hi,

I was mowing the lawn the other day on my Yard King lawn tractor, just happy as could be.

After mowing for 5 minutes, I lowered the throttle and put on the brake to empty the bagger. Suddenly the engine died with what sounded like a car backfire.

Since then the engine won't start (it won't even begin cranking). When I turn the key, I hear an audible click from the engine compartment, but that's it.

Here are the specifics of the engine:

Model: 407777
Type: 0137 E1
Code: 991119YG

PDF Manuals (https://briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/docsearch.aspx?modelNumber=407777&menu=nav3&subMenu=3&manuType=Operator%20Manuals)

Any ideas what could cause this? I'm pretty raw when it comes to small engines, so you may need to be a little bit more detailed than normal ;)

Thanks!
Jeff

It sounds like it could be a ground problem. The first thing to check is the battery connections. Be sure the connections are clean and tight. If you have a volt meter, hook it up to the battery terminals and read the voltage. If it's lower than approximately 12 volts the battery either needs charging or replacing. If the battery seems to have enough voltage try checking the solenoid.

Take a look at the starter... Does it still work? Is the stator somehow burned?

Also take a look into the cylinder... somehow you seem to be in the same situation with my 88' Toyota when it ran low on oil...

Can you crank it by hand?

I can turn the engine pulley by hand if that's what you mean. I also tried jumping directly to the starter and the engine turned, although very slowly and then stopped. The battery is new as of 4/07. Do you think it could have gone bad that quickly? Is there an equivalent of an alternator on tractors that could be bad?

Thanks!

bad connection somewhere. i dont think it could be the battery. try cleaning the ground wires and the postive cable on the battery. make sure its tight.

If you jumped straight to the starter with 12volts and it cranked slow, I would check the starter out. I worked on a truck once that the starter stuck engaged. You can't spin the starter over that fast and have it last too long. It may have been enough resistence to kill the engine at a lower rpm and also the reason it won't crank worth a hoot.

Good Luck

It was the fuel pump!
