Iam rebuilding my nieces 5hp Briggs for next year (gaskets, carb, piston rings, etc.) and i bought a header from a local go kart racer last weekend and iam having trouble taking off the existing muffler. Its a circular muffler that "screws" into the block. Iam having troubles screwing it out. Ive tried channelocks, and my bare hands, but it wont budge. i dont want to torch it off. So how do i remove the old muffler from the block without messing anything up???

THANKS

There should be a retainer bolt with teeth at the end of the pipe that meets the cylinder block, use a flat head screw driver and hammer to hammer the retainer loose counter clockwise. Then twist the muffler off counterclockwise. Its also a good idea to use penetrating oil on the threads. Happy Holidays~!
