View Full Version : Shelby Collectibles problems
edseldave 11-21-2007, 02:02 AM I recently found a red 2007 Shelby GT500 . Upon opening it , I found several problems with this one . mis-matched stripes on pass door , hood wont close & crack in rt winshield pillar . Some here have raved about these cars , while I like the few I bought , & this is the 1st one with major problems , I cant say they are any better than JL or Greenlight ..... I just cant believe this one car has so many issues . Usually there is only one thing wrong with a car .. - when there is a problem .
A Hot Wheel G Machine 64 Ford , I recently bought had scratches in the roof Paint with poor touch up & globs of dirt in it too ....
That one went back to the store for another ... This Shelby might too ...
sheldon 11-21-2007, 03:42 AM Interestingly, this is the SAME color combo that I received from the web shop that had similar quality issues... cracked windshield, hood won't close, etc. The rest of the color combos I bought were OK.
However, barring the quality issues, the details/features/scale on these SC's outpaces GL slighty (GL's quality is decent, but details/features are lacking, along with cartoonish tires), and knocks JL out of the park (JL's have excellent subject matter, but after taking a second and third and fourth look at these, I do not know how the art/sculpture department even let most of these castings go on to production with the waaay out of proportion wheel wells/fenders).
fuddmiester 11-21-2007, 07:35 AM Yes, I will buy one to open and one stay sealed if it's a casting I'm fond of. Most of these unfortunately are going to be staying in the package to hide the defects.
JasonZ 11-21-2007, 10:02 AM Right now, some of my Greenlight has these quality problems as well as 2 or 3 JL's
Wow....that hood issue looks pretty bad. I've only opened a couple of mine so far. The only issue I have had is the headlight pieces on the late model mustangs seem to be sticking out too far on some cars. Shouldn't be difficult to fix. With as many separate pieces as these Shely collectibles have, I'm not surprised that some mis-alignment issues are popping up. I just hope that when I open the rest of my cars it isn't a common thing.
edseldave 11-22-2007, 02:51 AM Sheldon : I know you grumbled about the 'too big' of tires on Greenlights , but these '07 Shelby's wheels look too small & skinny too me ...
Also still looking for that elusive , if even made blue '07 Shelby ...
sheldon 11-22-2007, 08:16 AM Edseldave,
Most likely, part of the justification that GL (and other makes, as indicated to me by a modeler) will use for their over sized tires is that they look better in smaller scales.
This may be true in some instances, but if you get a photograph of the real car and place it - in scale - next to the diecast, you will see that the SC's are much more realistic proportionally than GLs or JL's.
Sure, over sized wheels are perfectly justified for "effect" (translation: illusion), especially if the diecast is targeted toward children. However, I think that an "adult collectible" should be closer to the real thing.
In any event, another brand with excellently proportioned wheels - besides the 100%/Legends line from HW - would also be the Ertl 1/64 AM line (sadly defunct).
Lastly, I hope the illusive blue 2007 SC does show up one day!!
Stangfreak 11-22-2007, 10:03 AM I too bought that same Shelby Mustang at a Toys~R~Us and it also had a cracked rear window, mis-matched stripes, door wouldn't close all the way, and a few other misc. problems...
As I understand it, Toys~R~Us are only issued one of each model at a time...
I had to drive almost 40 miles to another TRU to exchange it... The new one was better, but still had some issues !!!

My car's door wouldn't close either :freak:
Pablodragon 11-22-2007, 02:06 PM That's too bad about these issues...
I too thought these were better than the GL stuff... actually, still due, I guess all the companys have issues like this.
One thing that pushes these to the top of my list is, like mentioned the realistic dimensions of the tires, and...have said it before... opening doors and side mirrors!
.. why is this the only adult collectible car company that does side mirrors? (I can see the ones that are cheap enough that they are geared toward the kids, maybe too sharp, maybe might come off, but when you charge more for detail and write adult collectible on yer package?)
Shelby collectibles are, hands down, the most realistically proportioned Mustangs available in 1:64 scale for under $5. The Autoart 1:64 late model Mustangs and Cobra concept may be better, bUt they also cost around $12 without opening panels. I agree with Sheldon that the only releases that come close are the HW 100%/Legends line, and the Ertl American Muscle cars. However, great proportions don't mean much if body parts and stripes don't line up correctly.
Being a Mustang enthusiast, I really enjoy these Shelby collectible cars. I'm really excited about them and I hope they continue to produce them for years. I am also a pretty critical collector when it comes to "adult" collectibles. With that said, I hope there is some real effort on their part to get these kinks worked out.
